Question about 'How to Share Files through Windows XP's Internet Connection Firewall'

I have a question about How to Share Files through Windows XP's Internet Connection Firewall:

If I understand correctly as I have 2 xp machines connected into a cisco uBR900 hub/cable modem, I cannot chare files between them without disabling the firewall and allowing the rest of the world acess to my computer - right? does this apply to sharing printers as well? why did microsoft even bother, I had black ice on these machines before I "upgraded" and now I can't even install that with xp alll I want to do is print things from machine A on the printer on machine B without allowing every hacker on the planet easy acess

I am no expert on Home metworks, but it is my understanding that the router itself, will have a firewall built in. Which would make the XP firewall unnecessary. Can anyone cofirm this? I'd like to know for sure also.....

You're not understanding something correctly. I've tested both the XP firewall and Zone Alarm Pro on my network, and everything works fine........full file sharing, printer, and internet access. You must have other problems, and I suspect it has something to do with your Cisco hub set-up.

I'm a bit confused on this, because I was having problems accessing the printer and my music files on my laptop ....looking up the same info on annoyances.org I found this info - http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article04-109 that says XP's firewall does in fact not allow for file sharing - default firewall rules will disable access to shared files from other computers on your local network - I did test this out and when I disabled the firewall I could one access the shared printer -- is it possible that there is something else at work or should I follow the instructions on the above mentioned article - which has me adding File Sharing to the service settings.
