Question about 'Connect to a Windows XP or 2000 system with a Windows 95, 98, or Me system over a Network'

I have a question about Connect to a Windows XP or 2000 system with a Windows 95, 98, or Me system over a Network:

Here is my network problems. I have a client network using all windows 98. All of them have been configure with tcp/ip and can share files and see each other every time i go to network neighborhood. THen later, the manager wanted to upgrade his old 98 and bought a brand new computer with xp home preinstalled. Whenever The xp is online, the rest of the network died. You can't see anything and the error message "Unable to browse the network appear on the windows 98 machines. Strangely enough, on xp you can see the name of all the computer on the network but when I tried to connect to them, i got the error "\\name is not accessible, you may not have permission...". Then i type in the address space "\\192.168.0.2", then it can connect to that computer. THe same thing did not happened when i put on the address on the win98 machines. There was not a DNS server or wins server what-so-ever. The problem is resolved when I took the xp home offline. Then all the 98 seems to talk to each other again. I tried to put NetBeui on all the machines but still no luck. ANy one can suggest me for a solution, would be appreciated

Your problem here seems to be ip addresses. make sure only one of the hosts has 192.168.0.1 if you have internet connection sharing on your system, that host must be set to 192.168.0.1. xp comes with ics already installed, and defaults to 192.168.0.1. it has to be configured to know what other pc hosts ics.

I had exactly the same type of problem with my home network. I have and old Win 95A machine and a brand new Athlon based XP system networked via a LinkSys BEFRS 41 DSL router/ether switch. I had the same errors, the ability to see the other machines from the XP box but not be able to connect for file or print sharing. What worked for me was to create an LMHOSTS file on each machine. Do a search on your PCs for LMHOSTS and there will be an example for you to follow. Ensure that you save without a file extension and then reboot the computers. Once I did that everything came in perfect. Below is and example from the LMHOSTS file I created on my machines: 192.168.1.101 the_bruiser #PRE 192.168.1.100 old_trooper #PRE I made sure that the files were exactly the same on both machines. Check out this website for more details: http://www.practicallynetworked.com/networking/mmr_fileprint_share.htm Good luck!

Hello Have you tried putting them all in the same workgroup? the new XP/2000 machines are very particular about workgroup/domain setting M$ again made it extremely difficult to make an easy task as connecting over a network possible ( to get more selling of their shiitty products, probably) good luck

I'm having the same problem myself, and nothing I am trying is working. How do you
do what you said to do?

"xp comes with ics already installed, and defaults to 192.168.0.1. it has to be configured
to know what other pc hosts ics."

Any help is appreciated =)

Similar Problem: Win95, Win98, WinME, and WinXP (Home Edition) systems. All but
the XP can see each other.

My systems are all attached to a regular hub that is directly attached to a cablemodem.
Each gets its IP address from Comcast via DHCP. I cannot ping or see the XP from
the others and they cannot see or ping the XP.

Does Comcast filter subnets so they cannot see each other?

Also, my XP was preinstalled. How do I get NetBeui since it is supposed to be an
extra file on the standard install disks?

Thank you in advance.
-Gary

I have exactly the same problem on three different mixed sites. I have all the correct settings (ip, workgroup etc) and have done the whole "Master browser" bit. In effect all the windows 9x and me machines have Browse master disabled. I force one of the windows XP machines to rig the election by setting the IsDomainMaster to True (regedit). So one machine, the one that I have selected is always the master browser. TCp/IP is the only Protocol (please don't say install netbuei) There is and ADSL gateway I have created a hosts AND an lmhosts file on all computers with the names of every computer on the network. Every computer has a folder shared I can ping any computer from any other I can use unc to get to any computer (\\pcname) I can find every computer using FIND in windows 9x The "master browser" xp machine shows all computers and lets me click on them to access shares None of the other computers can browse the network, not even the other windows XP computers. At times when I reset computers some will suddenly show up and start browsing. It look to me to be a bug in windows XP PRO computer browse service. There are less than 10 computers in each site having this problem, buit more than 5. HELP!!!

Similar problem. I can see all of the computers and connect to all of the computers from either of my two 98se boxes, connect to shares and printers on the XP box, but the XP box can not see any of the 98 boxes... I have dynamic IP addresses provided by my ISP for 2 of the boxes, and one of the 98 boxes is IPX/SPX & NETBUI only (no tcp/ip) What would be the best way to allow XP to see and connect to those boxes? Thanks

I had this problem as well, seems M$ really does'nt want you to network various versions of 9x to XP pro or 2000 , I installed all 3 network protocols on the 9x machines (95 & 98) and used netbeui and TCP/IP on win 2000 , IPX/SPX and TCP/IP on XP pro and guess what they now all can see each other and communicate don't ask me why as everyone else Ive talked to says you only need one protocol but I could not get it to work on just the one no matter what I did!P.S. I did install NETBEUI on the XP machine and it would not see the 9x ones unless ypu install IPX/SPX.

I had to do the same... Only problem is that now, the two 98se boxes take several minutes to browse the network when I try to open a shortcut to a shared resource, or open network neighborhood. I'm not sure how to fix that yet, but I am thinking of biting the bullet and putting XP on the other 2 machines... I can get cheap oem copies off eBay...
