File Sharing: XP Pro - XP Home - DLink 713P Router - SB4100 Cable Modem

Computer 1 running XP Pro.
Computer 2 running XP Home.
Both are connected to a DLink 713P router, whose WAN port is connected to a Motorola
Surfboard SB4100 cable modem.
Both computers can surf the internet, but neither can access the other for file sharing.
What must I do ?

You must enable file sharing on both computers. Here is a good article describing
the procedure:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q308418
If you have questions, feel free to send e-mails.

I am using FAT32 on both computers. Simple File Sharing is enabled.
On each computer, a folder has been designated (under Network Sharing
and Security) as a "Shared" folder.
In Explorer, on the XP Pro computer, I see:
My Network Places
Entire Network
Microsoft Windows Network
Mshome
ProComputerName
MySharedFile
============================
In Explorer, on the XP Home computer, I see:
My Network Places
Entire Network
Microsoft Windows Network
Mshome
=============================
As you can tell, the the XPPro computer can see itself and its shared
folder, but does not see the XPHome computer and its shared folder.
The XPHome computer sees nothing but the workgroup.

I had the same problem. You need to right click on a drive in Windows Explorer and
select sharing and security. In the sharing and security screen unselect share this
folder or drive. Click ok. The right click on the drive again go back to the sharing
screen and select the share this drive option and type in what you want the drive
to be known as. I don't know why this was required on my machine, but it worked.

Did you solve this issue? I have exactly the same problem. I can't figure out what
to do.

You have to format your Harddisk with NTFS system,
Have you done it with FAT?

I am having the same problem after upgrading my laptop to XP yesterday. I have a
dlink di713p and DWL650. I was ultimately able to be able to see and get access
to files and shared printers by creating a second wireless ad-hoc connection. Unfortunately,
it was not stable and would lock up during the communication, either stopping the
print in the middle or locking up while opening a directory on the remote PC. In
addition, I would lose the internet connection through the router and need to power
it down and back up to get it too work even though the connection still showed OK
by XP. I am hoping a router firmware upgrade solves the problem. I need to get
my hands on an ethernet card as Dlink strongly discourages upgrading firmware over
a wireless connection. I am at version 2.55 and 2.60 is available. If someone
has the solution... I am interested!

Problem Solved!
Here's the steps I took:
Removed all services expect TCP/IP from the connections, i.e. Clint for Microsoft
Networks; File & Print Sharing; and the QuS packet thingy
Upgraded to version 2.60b6a. I had to work through a two older version first...
and could not use the executable that came from Dlink. I used the Tools on the Router
Configuration page then selected upgrade firmware.
Reinstalled the network using the XP wizard and selected connect through a gateway.
Everything is super stable now. No problems and I can print and share files at my
leisure!
Hope someone finds this useful...

I have a similar configuration and problem:
3PCs
1. W98
2. W2K
3. XP
All have WLAN cards to a DI-713P, Broadband via SB4100.
Running the XP WLAN brings down the 713P/SB4100, requiring power down to both.
Interestingly, I am now cable-connected from the XP to 713B, and all is well (PCs
1&2, w/ WLAN are OK also).
Any ideas?

Mine's nearly identical: both on XP Home, SB4200, D-Link 714UP. I can see the directories
of the other computers, surf the web, invoke the router—just can't transfer files.
Annoying thing is that it worked for the first eight hours or so. Only change: Windows
XP Update that came in automatically.

My fix (FYI)
Friday, April 22, 2005 at 7:16 pm Posted by Jack Yan
(27 messages posted)
Hi everyone:
I believe I may have posted this elsewhere as well, and apologize for any double-ups.
I just want to put this on the record for others to find in case they have the same
problem.
D-Link tech support was great but their solution was to exchange the unit. I eventually
plugged in my laptop and it worked, so I concluded it had to be a set-up thing between
Desktop Computer A and Desktop Computer B, both running XP Home.
I began investigating all the settings again, and strangely, the laptop and computer
A (which could talk to one another) had different things installed under 'This connection
uses the following items'—contrary to the advice I had read. So I knew that the differences
would not be a major problem.
Anyway, I went to Configure the network card on B and a message came up saying that
if I went in, some of my new settings would disappear. This didn't happen with either
A or the laptop, so I knew something was up.
The laptop and the B have the same family of network card, yet under the 'Advanced'
tab, the laptop had 'Link Speed/Duplex Mode' on 'Automatic' (which is what B was
set to).
However, after I set B to '10 Full Mode' ('10 Half Mode' also worked), I could do
everything!
Just for clarity, A has a different type of network card and only has 'Line Speed'
as the sole property under 'Advanced'. It's set on 'TP Half Duplex'.
So there you have it: I went _against_ all the rules, have totally different settings
between the machines, and it all works!
Regards,
Jack

i have been experiencing all the same problems mentioned above, with the exception
of the router, i have a netgear wireless router.
all my settings are the same as before i started tampering with this issue.
my fix was this:
because i have Windows Live OneCare installed -
1. view or change settings
2. Firewall Tab
3. Advance settings
4. Advanced Tab
Sharing and connections
If my files and printers are shared, treat them as follows
change from:
5. Do not share files and printers
to:
6. Only share them with computers on my local network
now i am able to see shares on my XP Pro system "from" my XP Home system.
i have yet to test the other direction!
