Troubleshooting windows xp to windows me

I am trying to add a windows xp computer to my network.
I have a peer to peer network with 2 computers running
windows 98 and windows me. Each computer has a network card
and are attached to a hub. A cable modem is plugged into the hub.
Each computer has an IP assigned by ATT. I have TCIP and IPX/SPX
installed. I only have file sharing bound to IPX/SPX.
Everything between these computers is fine. They can independently
connect to the internet and can share files and printers. When I
tried to connect an xp computer the same way, all I can manage to get
is to have the windows 98 computer 'see' xp on the network, but can't
share files. The xp computer is able to connect independently to the
net, so I know the NIC is working. To the best of my knowledge, the xp
computer is configured the same way as the other two. Any tips would
be appreciated.

Sory about that..when i went to preview the message, the computer must have erased
my message. Grrs.. Yet another annoyance on a day of annoyances!
Well onto my post... I am having a similar problem with trying to add a windows xp
computer to a windows 98 peer to peer network. I have some compuetrs on static ips
and one that uses the NetBeui protocol to share files. It does not have a static
ip and getting one is not an option. I have tried all of the Microsoft suggested
fixes but none of them have solved the problem. Not enabling NetBios over TCIP..,
not enabling the Guest account... not giving the other computer's user a user account
and a password on the XP computer.. Not even.. adding NetBeui to the XP computer
(found the way to do that on a webpage).. So if anyone can help.please do so...
As this point I am very annoyed with windows XP.

Okay -- it's a long ways back from this question being asked, but here's half the
solution:
WindowsXP is always in a domain, regardless of whether you have it set to a Workgroup
or not. Thus, to connect to the XP system from the others, you must supply the logon
domain. For example, if your computer name is "xp1" and the user is "bob" you would
pass the username of "xp1\bob" and bob's password. The other direction is what I'm
having problems with, though....

I had finally figured out how to connect all my computers. To date, I do not know
which of the "fixes" did the trick.
I took the following steps.
First I deleted everything I had done to date. Then I reinstalled NetBeui by copying
the files over from the XP disk for the manual installation. Then I redid all of
the ip addresses on the XP computer. I then installed TCP/ICP on the windows 98
computer but did NOT assign a static ip address. (Remember all my other computers
had a static ip address and TCP/IP installed already including the XP computer.
I then rebooted the win 98 computer and logged onto the network using the SAME user
name as the XP computer I logged onto. (I doubt you have to do this.) Then I rebooted
the XP computer, went to network places and voila.. there was my missing win 98 computer!!
To test, I shared the drive on the XP computer and could see files FROM the win 98
computer. And I could see files on the win 98 computer FROM the XP computer. Just
out of curiousity, I checked the ip address section on win 98 computer and mystically,
there was an ip address in there that I had NOT given it, nor was it one of our static
ip addresses. I've come to the conclusion that only Computer Gurus will ever know
the why's and whatfores of what happened. But I am happy that it works now. Some
very nice people wrote to me privately to help me with the problem and I am very
grateful for their help. Thanks to all :)
