Question about 'How do I turn off Windows XP's built-in support for ZIP files?'

The process described in "How do I turn off Windows XP's built-in support for ZIP
files?" did not work for me. It was successful initially, but as soon as I re-associated
ZIP files with WinZip, so that I can double click on them to open them, then Explorer
went right back to treating them as folders again. Did I miss something, or is this
"solution" really that useless?

Issue
regsvr32 /u %windir%\system32\zipfldr.dll
from the command prompt.

Since when is this an annoyance. It's faster to view files and it doesnt take up
any more space. I have winzip installed but i only use it for making self-extracting
zips

1. You obviously haven't tried searching for files while haning many zips. It opens
up and searches though every one. I have over 10,000 zips...
2. Windows has bad support for running apps from a zip (it only extracts the exe).
3. When unzipping it seems to unzip everything to a temp dir, then move it to where
you want.
Personally I prefer winrar over winzip, but thats just becasue it supports many more
formats.

Errm... There's more of a reason to use WinZip. At my school, a fellow student requested
that I get some emulators over to his laptop. Some of the ROM files wouldn't go over
because they were too big. I tried putting it all in a zip, and it was STILL
too big! Apparrently, WinXP doesn't have ANY spanning capability. Granted, the ZipFolders
feature DOES allow us to unzip ROMs without our teacher seeing (the only good thing
about it), but it plain SUCKS! BTW, can anyone convince Nico Mak (WinZip's makers)
to make WinZip 6.3 SR-1 or even 7.0 for a "Floppy Sized WinZip?" I ended up having
to put PKZIP 2.5 DOS on the laptop!

XP 'Zip' fix doesn't work

I agree with PhilHT - exactly the same thing happened to me.
Unfortunately, this solution does appear to be useless.
And please, let's not have any more 'help' from people telling us how splendid the
built-in XP support is. If we liked it, we wouldn't be asking this website for help
to turn it off.

it DOES work - but extra steps required

It does work after all, but only if after running the 'zipfldr' dll you re-start
the computer, then immediately run the WinZip executable, at which stage it asks
if you want to fully associate Zip files with WinZip. If you say yes, it seems to
work.

Why is everyone doing this shit, I mean, you can just install winzip and click "keep
assocations" or whatever and winzip will just obtain them

I ran into the same problem with the registry fix. I even tried deleting zipfldr.dll
but found that XP's System Restore would restore zipfldr.dll and re-associate it
with .ZIP. To finally get around this I had to turn off System Restore (System Properties
| System Restore Tab) and then run the registry fix "regsvr32 /u %windir%\system32\zipfldr.dll"
and now I can search my harddrive without it looking through every zip file I have
and my Winzip program does not have to fight to keep it's association with .zip files.

I tried this re-booting trick and it worked for me. WinZip works fine, and search
stays out of ZIP files. Finally!
Thanks!

I had the same problem, what I did is run the regsvr32 command and then went to c:\windows\system32
and renamed the zipfldr.dll to zipfldr.dlo. Problem solved.
Next time I clicked on a Zip file it asked me which program to use, so I selected
the one I wanted and marked "always use this program".
Why microsoft makes things so complicated????

you can do "regsvr32 /u %windir%\system32\cabview.dll" as well to disable XP's built
in cab viewer (same thing as the zip viewer)

The regserv didn't work by itself. I ran it and renamed zipfldr.dll, however, xp
instantly created a new one.
What I did was let xp create the new dll, opened it in a text editor and deleted
the contents. After I saved it I reassociated and now it works.

good about xp? It's unstable, it's slow, and the stupid rounded puffy interface is

WinZIP ? What is this winzip talking all about.
WinRAR - http://www.rarlab.com
WinRAR provides complete support for RAR and ZIP archives and is able to unpack CAB,
ARJ, LZH, TAR, GZ, ACE, UUE, BZ2, JAR, ISO archives

Late reply, but just in case anyone's interested there's a pretty decent free alternative
to WinZip and WinRAR available called IZarc: http://www.izsoft.dir.bg/izarc.htm.
Supports many formats, and is legally freeware (author accepts donations).

The problem is that windows shit XP keeps some files in the following directories:
C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache
C:\WINDOWS\system32
What I did is rename the file zipfldr.dll to zipfldl.dlo in first three directories
above. I received a message telling me if I change some files to unknown extensions
Windows XP will not function properly. I simply ignore it. I used the command:
regsvr32 -u C:\WINDOWS\system32\zipfldr.dll
and rename the file in this directory. It works!
I am from Brazil and a portugese word that means very bad is "ruim". He we call Windows
XP as
RUIMDOWS!!! I sugest to use windows 2003(not the server) or better at all: LINUX!!!!!

Apply this tip forever...
Friday, August 27, 2004 at 2:59 pm Posted by Ragnorok
(1 messages posted)
- After unregistering the server, open a command line window as Administrator.
- Delete the file %windir%\system32\dllcache\zipfldr.dll.
- Rename the file %windir%\system32\zipfldr.dll to something without a DLL on the
end.
- Winbloze will never load that file again, nor will it automagically replace it
"for" you, and re-register it. When you run WinZip it will ask to re-associate with
ZIPs. Just say yes and drive on without fear...

Actually, the "Puffy" interface is not required. All you have to do is change the
Theme in the Display settings to Windows Classic, and then you won't have to worry
about it.
And as for instability, I've actually been able to run my XP computer for at least
a week at a time. It may be because I have Professional and not Home (among other
things, like using Opera 7 instead of IE), but meh.

It's an annoyance b/c everybody MUST despise any archiver that is built-in in the
file manager and prefer archivers that look like the win3x file browser, why b/c
the almighty M$ says so.
