Question about 'Connect to a Windows XP system with a Windows 98 system over a Crossover Cable Network'

I have a question about Connect to a Windows XP or 2000 system with a Windows 95, 98, or Me system over a Network:

I want to share my cable modem between my two computers. One is running winxp, and another is running win98. I am planning on using the winxp computer as the gateway and connect to the win98 computer through a crossover ethernet cable. So far, I got no luck of setting up the internet sharing part. On the winxp computer, I got two connections: one is the local network, another one is the internet connection.

Copied and pasted this from support.microsoft.com, I think it might have reference to your problem: "If the network cabling is twisted-pair (RJ-45), you must use a hub or concentrator. Windows 98 does not support direct connections of RJ-45 cable between computers." URL is http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q192534 text is found in step 8 of this guide.

I've been using crossover for a couple of years with RJ-45, with Win98. Using Cat-5 cable, cross the orange wire with the orange and white, also cross the green with the green and white. I bought wall plates at Home Depot with RJ-45 wall plugs and a little blue tool for connecting the cat5 cable. I crossed the wires behind the wall and used a regular patch cable. I wished I had used regular wall connection w/crossover patch cable. Because now I have 3 computers and need a hub instead.

To Em or anyone that got Win98 to network w/ crossover cable:

Since you have a working networked Win98 PC w/ a crossover cable, might you know
why mine doesn't work?

As MGDodge pointed out, "Windows 98 does not support direct connections of RJ-45
cable between computers." I didn't know this. If it's true, it wasn't stated on
the box of my Belkin crossover cable.

I've tried to get it to work. Both computers have same protocols. Adapters running
OK according to System Properties. The respective computers on their respective
Network Neighborhoods. I've made sure IP address are unique & subnet is same numerous
times.

Strange thing is when both PCs are on and connected, both PCs (Win98 & Win95) detect
a link (Link ON). But when I try pinging each other, the pinging fails. I also
tried "netdiag" (or "net diag", whichever it is) and tried setting up a diagnostic
server on either, then switched, and using NetBeui and IPX but both PCs never detect
the server.

So do you think I missed something or did something wrong or my cable doesn't work?

I am experiencing similar problems to those reported by you. did you ever find a solution? .. I've tried numerous options and combinations of set up options for both PC's, with varying degrees of success.. but never enough to actually be able to transfer files. It's driving me bananas!

I've had a ridiculous amount of trouble networking my two XP PCs. The desktop has Pro, and the laptop has Home. I've just now gotten the desktop to be able to access the laptop, but not vice versa. *shrugs* I'll keep plugging away. Besides setting the IP addresses to be on the same subnet and giving them the same subnet mask, what finally did the trick (thus far) was disabling the QoS packet thing on both computers. I'd give that a try, if I were you. Now, if only I could get the laptop to see....

I've just managed to transfer the files from the old to the new pc. I think trial and error wins through at the end of the day.. i had also just disabled the QOS thing, and also enabled IPX/SPX ... not sure what did the trick. not fully 'networked ' yet, but transfering the files was my main priority.

I had a perfectly working LAN with main: Win2K, host: Win98, using cross-over.
Sharing files went great.
Sharing Internet went thorugh a WinProxy.
I now have XP on the main system and the same Win98 on the host.
Bought 2 identical new LAN adapters because XP didn't like my old LAN cards.
I know for sure that I have my settings right for Win98.
I used the Network Wizard on XP.
Local IP's and subnet are correct, Internet Sharing enabled.

Now the strange thing:

XP can see both XP and Win98 computer names.
But XP cannot view the shares.
The Win93 cannot see the network.
Both PC's cannot PING eachother!

It's driving me nuts.
what's the problem here?

P.S. I've read about security, user authorization etc.
But I've seen it work somewhere without the User Accounts addition.

I have had problem pinging between my win98 and winxp laptop using a crossover connector. I finally get everything working by lowerring the transfer speed to 10mbs. In the automatic mode, the cards would negotiate to 100mbs but I only see it worked once. I'm using a cheap d-link dfe-530tx card from Fry's on the win98 pc and I begin to wonder if it is causing the problem. You can control the card speed via the adapter card's config or property dialog -> advanced tab -> link speed/duplex mode setting Also, I set both of my pc on the same workgroup. win98 pc ip: 192.168.0.1, mask 255.255.255.0 no dns, no wins, no gateway winxp pc ip: 192.168.0.2, mask 255.255.255.0 no dns, no wins, gateway 192.168.0.1 Hope this help TS

To connect XP - 98 and XP - XP PCs both your pcs need to give you admin rights. Also check that workgroups on the pcs are same (control panel - network - identification). Right click for folder options on 98 pc and see if it permits you to work on the file / folder sharing. If not you ar enot the administrator, but a subuser or you machine is not configured to work on multiuser platforms. COnnect the machines on crossover personal netw. and boot both machines. They both should indicate that LAN is operational. Ensure that specific folders on 98 machine and xp machine are permitted to be shared. If not configure them and reboot. Open my network places on XP machine and you should see "Shared folder on xxxx (the other computer name)". Though these steps appear as wasteful and cumbersome they do help ensuring network safety in this age of nosey hackers. YOu can stil circumvent these blocks. On personal networks for your own purposes switch off the firewall on XP and when the job is finished switch it back on atleast on XP machine. We understand that the above modfication for private net facilitation also leaves you pc vulnerable to outside hackers when you surf the net. Hope you managed your problem by now.

I have very similar trouble with christiaan, I used crossover cable between two win98, sharing the internet through high speed internet(Road Runner) is ok, Sharing files and printer is ok. now I try to connect a win 98 (direct connect to internet) with winXP home But some times internet sharing works, sometimes not XP can see the computer name of win98, but can not access it. win 98 can not see XP in the networkneighborhood, so can not share printer. Printer is connected to win98

Typical how MS says this. My problem was fixed, but not by a hub. It turned out to be incompatible LAN-card. Didn't work in Win98. Re-inserted my old 3Com and viola! XP and Win98 are very good able to communicate with a cross-over. My great question rises from these threads: --> Why are there so many different answers and solutions, while they conflict eachother. It seems that many things work for some cases, but sometimes it doesn't. Strange. I didn't have to use any LAN setup diskette for my Win98. It just worked super. Define ISP on LAN-card 1 Define local range on LAN-card 2 Enable Internet sharing on the main PC There we go! :)

I finally solved my laptop to win98 connection problem using a crossover cable. It turned out that the cable is the problem. I decided to make my own cable last weekend and it works at the full speed (100mbs or 100base-t). At closer look at the bad cable seems to indicate that the tx-tx+ wires are not in the same twisted pair so the signal is not protected from noise. Don't by cheap cable from fry's electronics!

I've been dodging this problem for a year now. Sometimes the network connecton works & sometimes NOT...... After 3 days at a customers location I finally called Microsoft and put out the money to find the answer. It appears that WINXP doesn't play well with a crossover cable. Buy a HUB and the problem went away. All works well with a HUB!

OK guys, first of all let me do a little bitching about Windows. According to the
support center Windows 98 does not support connecting two computers with a crossover
cable. So yea, this is bull... I guess they never got it figured out, so they just
gave up... typical Microsoft attitude.

Allright, now that i'm done with that

PROBLEM:
Desktop Computer - Win XP Proffesional
Laptop - Win98 SE
I connected these two computers with a standard Cat5 RJ45 crossover cable and they
didn't recognize eath other. The 98 found "Laptop" on "Workgroup" and the XP found
"Desktop" on "Workgroup" So with a little trial and error and a few forums (computer
technicians two best friends lol) I figured out how to do it.

SOLUTION:
Win98: Intall "IPX/SPX-compatible protocol"
WinXP: Uninstall "QoS Packet Scheduler

HOW:
Win98 - Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Network -> Add -> Protocol -> Microsoft
-> IPX/SPX-compatible Protocol -> OK -> OK -> Yes *RESTART YOUR COMPUTER*

WinXP - Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections -> *Right click on adapter*
-> Properties -> QoS Packet Scheduler -> Uninstall -> Yes -> Close *RESTART YOUR
COMPUTER*

That should fix the problem, at least it did for me. Ok, since i'm a computer technician
here comes the legal bs

NOTE: This solution is intended for information purposes only. Since Microsoft Windows
98 does not support this feature any technical support given on this issue will be
invalid. To solve this solution please consider using a hub or router with cat5 straight
through network cabling.

I have the same problem. Win 98SE (client) connected to WinXP (host) using dial up to internet with crossover cable attached to both PC's. I ran the ICS software from XP onto 98, it worked intermittently, shares work intermittently, can only get either or working, not both at same time. The TCP/IP config on Win98 also goes missing (resets to "automatically assign IP address) which has a D-Link NIC. It would probably work if the TCP/IP stayed but how can I get it to do this? Can anyone help? Would releasing and/or renewing the IP address help, if so how many times does it have to be done.

I've spent a couple days getting XP on one computer to connect with 98SE on another! A lot of good suggestions on this page, so I'm not sure exactly what did it - It finally worked when I rechecked my home-made crossover cable and dicsovered I had to switch 2 pairs of wires (Green and Orange, White/Orange and White/Green) instead of just one. There are 2 standards for this cableing - 568A and 568B. A crossover cable has A on one end and B on the other.
