I have a question about Can
you provide a list of all possible Windows error messages?:
I am running win xp with all ms updates on a 1.53 AMD w/512 mb of ram,2/40gb hd's
setup in a raid configuration. I have high speed internet access via cable and I
am running netscape 6. I can access
normal webpages fine but I am unable to access secure pages. I get an error message
page cannot be found every time. I can access these pages from other machines running
different
platforms but not on mine. Can you give me a few tips on how to possibly correct
this? I have tried following ssome other suggestions but to no avail. thank you

I know how. Ditch netscape garbage and use Internet Explorer. You will find that
ALL your errors will dissapear. Netscape is garbage anyway. Regards. Me

Try I.E. and see if you have that same problem. I run both Netscape and I.E. because
of the bugs in both. What I can not access with one I can with the other.

Dont know about netscape but i faced the same problem in IE - solved it thus:
tools>internet options>connections>lan settings>Use proxy server>advanced>Use same
proxy server for all protocols
that did it - the "https://" secure pages started sowing up.

I've seen some Internet Explorers that can't access any secure pages at all, no matter
what settings you change. I've gone into the Internet Options and set all the settings
to the factory default and it still does that. No firewall installed or any other
software that would block the port or anything.
Still to this day I can't find a fix for it. That's how got to this page in the first
place. If someone knows the slution. Could you please e-mail me?
By the way, Reinstalling Internet Explorer or upgrading did help either. :(

This issue is commonly created when Windows XP doesn't properly update to SP1, There's
is a fix for it
fastest way is to do 'Start->Run: regsvr32 softpub.dll' now this wont fix everyones
problem
noting you wont be able to properly install newer versions of Internet Explorer because
your cretificate information is also corrupt, doing a system recovery to
before the SP1 update fixes both problems- In Theory

What if you don't use a proxy server? What do you put for your proxy server?

Until recently I could not access one specific secure site. As I was using IE6, I
tried Opera instead. With Opera I could access the secure site but no pictures on
the site were displayed. Eventually I solved the problem, whatever the browser, by
increasing the size of the MTU.
In a nutshell, if the TCP/IP packets are too small, a secure server thinks the information
in the packet is possibly malicious and drops it. The requesting computer (my PC)
sits there waiting and waiting until it finally times itself out. Apparently this
can also be caused by either a router, firewall or computer (in the path between
my computer and the secure server) which is blocking ICMP Code 3 Type 4 packets (whatever
they are!), which blocks the sending computer or firewall from discovering the MTU
path and/or size available. The solution is to increase the size of the MTU (maximum
transfer unit). Beware, there is a maximum value of MTU.
I was browsing the Web and came across an article entitled: "Slow, Incomplete or
No Access to Some Secure Online Banking Web Sites - by John Tolmachoff" at the following
URL:
http://www.isaserver.org/tutorials/onlinebanking.html
The above-mentioned article tells you how to change the MTU for Windows 2000 and
Windows XP, but the Registry modification given cannot be used for Windows 98 or
ME. However, I have the utility System Mechanic installed, which allows me to change
the MTU for any Windows operating system, so I used System Mechanic to change the
MTU on my PC. I set the MTU to 1492 (apparently the maximum allowable for my ADSL
connection) and, lo and behold, I can now access the problematic secure site using
IE6 with SSL 3.0 enabled.
So there we are. Not a bug in Windows, not a bug in IE, but a 'feature' of TCP/IP.
If someone has a problem accessing all, some or only one specfic secure site, perhaps
the size of the MTU is the cause of the problem.
