The XP troubleshooter in help is pretty good. That would be a place to start. It is more comprehensive and better organized than I could attempt in this reply, so I will not try and cover everything that is in there. There is a network setup wizzard in XP that prompts you to make a network setup disk, which you then run on each other computer (including Win98 machines). Personal firewalls can block access between computers. I also installed NETBUI on all our machines (this may just be superstition). NETBUI is on the WinXP setup CD, but you have to jump through hoops to get it. I would recommend this as a last resort. I hope the above is helpufl. I do this so often, I put a Network Connections icon on the desktop of the Administrator account user. 2) Even when the network is working, after a reboot a WinXP machine, the WinXP machine seems to take longer to connect than a Win98 machine. In other words, right after reboot, the WinXP machine has not yet connected, but may connect successfully on its own after 5 minutes or so. (On a Win98 only network, machines would seem to reconnect after reboot almost immediately.) I hope this is helpful. On the XP machine I created the network setup diskfrom the wizzard and then installed this on the ME machine. It worked right away. I noticed that the ME wizzard did not support a router while the XP wizzard did. Netbios is not like tcp/ip where each computer is designated an unique ip adress on the network instead it uses socket number and distinct name. Because of this it cannot pass trought a router. now i'm not sure if your network is using the router as a way to connect to the internet or if you are using the routeur to separate the two machine. In the later case you will never be able to see the other computer but you should be able to use the internet. If your routeur is connected by wan at a broad band modem and the other computer inside the network are in lan then you should try enabling file sharing on both the machines. if that dosent work you can always use the networking disk that is created using the winxp cdrom on your win98 machine aldo i find this solution to be lacking. Also make sure that both your computer are in the same workgroup and that win98 is uptodate with the latest upgrade.
