Can't renew IP address
Monday, May 27, 2002 at 4:57 pm Posted by Petey

When I "repair" my TCP/IP in the LAN connections box (double clicking on the LAN
icon in the systray) I get a message "the following steps of the repair operation
failed: Renewing the IP address".
Is there another way to renew the IP. I liked 98's ipcfg. It was easier and more
concise.

winipcfg for Windows XP:
Instead of using the command line to display/configure your ip with ipconfig, you
can download wntipcfg from microsoft which will give you the same GUI to display
/ configure your ip as winipcfg. once you download it and install it (the default
is c:\program files\resource kit\ ) copy wntipcfg.exe to c:\windows
and rename it to winipcfg.exe Now you can just click on run, then you type in "winipcfg"
just like the good old days

if you go to the Help and Support, then choose under Pick a help topic
Networking and the Web. Then Under fixing networking or web problems /
Diagnose networking problems and run automated tests. Choose the Scan system option.
This will diagnose all parts of the connection process, do a release/renew and flush
the DNS cache---hopefully helping pinpoint the problem.
If a renew does not work, it usually signifies the inabilibility to reach the DHCP
server 9On your router or at the ISP usually.
Good Luck

Hi , much of the time this problem is related to a firewall ,XP or other. Anyway
most of what you want to do is available from the command prompt . "ipconfig /all"
"ipconfig /release" "ipconfig /renew" are the popular commands. Case

The problem is with your access point(AP) router. The router isn't releasing your
MAC address.
Solution: Turn off all computers, router/AP and DSL modem (if applicable). Next turn
on the router/AP wait until diags are done. Next turn on DSL modem, wait for solid
link light. Next press and hold the rest button on your router/AP until the default
setting are restored. Then turn on your computers. These steps are more clearly spelled
out in the Linksys DSL/Router owners manual. This solution, although not written
as a solution; it was written as a setup step, worked like a charm for me. Good luck

i am having the same problem here. it started after i tried to connect to my home
computer from work with winvnc.... not sure if that has anything to do with it tho...
i also tried some new wireless equipment out (router&reciever, linksys).... anyways
everytime ive turned on comp for last few days, its been on "automatic private address",
ive had to do a repair to fix it... well starting since yesterday i can no longer
repair it! now says unable to renew ip....... i have winxp pro which ive never updated,
dont know if that is part of the problem but is likely.... i know wireless config
in winxp had some bugs that were addressed in updates...
another thing that might be related is i disabled a bunch of non-crucial winxp services....
well i have reenabled them all now, still get no valid ip......
my ip comes up 192.68.xxx.xxx and says automatic private address now.... should
say dhcp instead and say 67.xxx.xxx.xxx as ip. no idea how to fix this if i figure
it out tho ill let u know.... gonna try reinstalling tcp/ip & see if that will work...
let me know if u figure it out...
ps-does the same thing on all my connections now even dial up and wireless. cant
get valid ip. think tcp/ip corrupted in windows that would be my first guess...
pps-i have called comcast and they cant figure this out either, have tried all modem
resets, uninstall/reinstalls, disable/enable, no luck

This worked perfectly for my winxp sp2 machine. Had same symptoms: just removed
malware, machine worked for about a week, then found more malware, couldn't renew
IP. It would release, but renew failed before timeout. Removed all traces of malware,
ran sfc.exe, installed this fix. Disco.
Thank you for posting this, if I hadn't seen it I would have ended up reinstalling.

Believe it or not, I resolved the problem in a very simple way. Although, XP has
your passphrase / WEP key stored, you assume that's not the problem when it's trying
to renew your IP address. But if you just reenter it and verify it. Boom! Back up
and running. XP seems to forget to ask for this reauthorization.
