Question about 'Downloading Windows Updates'
Saturday, June 1, 2002 at 1:10 am
Posted by Steve (4 messages posted)

I have a question about Downloading Windows Updates:

I believe that by inadvertantly downloading and installing any and all windows updates that I have compromised my computer's speed. If anyone can guide me through how to delete/uninstall windows updates it would be greatly appreciated- thank you.

You can find them in Add and Remove Programs in the Control Panel; they are called Hotfixes.

Hi, I have the same problem. In your reply are you to delete Hotfixes and what are they anyways?

I am having the same problem. But when I go to add/remove programs and see all the "hotfixes" downloaded, when I click on one to remove it, the option or link to "remove" the program is unavailable. the system simply hangs and says that windows setup is running. Any advice out there? thanks!

Hi,

I'm A SMALL Microsoft OEM And Am Have Had The Same Problem. Here Is The Solution
That Has Worked For Me. It's Time Consuming And VERY Exacting, But It Has Worked
For Me Several Times Now,

Step 1: After A Fresh Install Of Windows XP, Open Windows Explorer, Go To The Following
Folders And Delete ALL Files And Folders. An Easy Way Is to Highlight The Folder(s)
In Question, Click On Edit, Then "Select All", Then Hit The Delete Button On The
Keyboard. Then Empty The Recycle Bin. The Folders Are: "C:\WINDOWS\TEMP", AND "C:\Documents
and Settings\(Your User Name)\Local Settings\Temp".

Step 2: Go To The Windows Update Site And Download ONLY The "Windows XP Updates",
Being SURE To Remove ALL Of The "Critical Updates" EACH Time!. Do The Windows XP
Updates ONE AT A TIME, Starting At The BOTTOM Of The List, Add The One You Want And
Install Per Screen Instructions. Restart Your Machine After Each Update, EVEN If
The Update DOESN'T Require It.

Step 3: After Completing This, Open Windows Explorer, Go To The Following Folders
And Delete ALL Files And Folders. An Easy Way Is to Highlight The Folder(s) In Question,
Click On Edit, Then "Select All", Then Hit The Delete Button On The Keyboard. Then
Empty The Recycle Bin. The Folders Are: "C:\WINDOWS\TEMP", AND "C:\Documents and
Settings\(Your User Name)\Local Settings\Temp".

Step 4: Go Back To The Microsoft Windows Update Site And Download Any "Driver Updates"
That Are Available To You, AGAIN, Doing Them ONE AT A TIME Starting At The BOTTOM
Of The List, And AGAIN Being SURE To Remove ALL Of The "Critical Updates" EACH Time!
Add The One You Want And Install Per Screen Instructions. When ALL Are Completed,
Go Back And Repeat Step 3.

Step 5: Go Back To The Microsoft Windows Update Site And Download The Critical Updates,
AGAIN, Doing Them ONE AT A TIME Starting At The BOTTOM Of The List. Restart Your
Machine After Each Update, EVEN If The Update DOESN'T Require It. IMPORTANT!!!! Skip
The Update Called "811493: Security Update (Windows XP)", Download Size: 3.2MB .
NEVER Install It. When Completed, Go Back And Repeat Step 3. Your Machine Should
Now Be As Up To Date As Possible, And Still Be Stable (Unless You Have A Hardware
Problem). WATCH OUT Because These Updates MUST Be ALL Be "Removed" Except The One
That You Want, NOT Added Like The Other Catagories.

Everyone Please Let Me Know If This works Because If It Does For Several More People,
Then I Can "Jump Down Microsoft's Throat" About That Particular Update That Causes
Machines To "Lockup", OK? I Know This Sounds Like A LOT Of trouble, But It Has Been
Proven to Work Here On Several Installations Of "Windows XP Home Edition, With Service
Pack 1".

I Suggest Printing this Out So That You can Follow It More Easily.

John, Hey, I have a big problem, and I think you maybe could help me out. I go to Indiana University, and their IT department sent this e-mail for all the students to go to Windows Updates, search for any needed updates, and then download any critical updates. Therefore, I downloaded and installed 3 cricitcal updates to my computer. However, now whenever my computer starts, it gives me the message "Cannot run C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll.exe"; hence, none of my programs or files in the system 32 will work. Therefore, I can't do anything on my computer except run the files on my desktop. I tried to remove the updates, but I cannot even run my "Add or Remove Programs" in the Control Pannel because it said it cannot find the file. Also, I tried to do a system restore to before I updated my computer, but I cannot run that either because it cannot find that file. I could really use any advice you can give me. I'm sure it has to do with the system updates that I was told to download. Please help if you can. Thanks!

Kirk,

I'm Assuming That You Are Running Windows XP Home Edition, Correct? If So, The ONLY
Answer I Can Come Up With Is To Obtain A Copy Of This File (rundll.exe) From Another
Local XP User And Copy It To Your Hard Drive. I Would Send You A Copy, But I Don't
Have ANY Machines Running XP In The Shop At The Moment. Check And See If You Can
"Extract" A Copy Of The File From Your XP CD.

Be Careful Though, This MAY Be A Worm Virus Caused Situation. Do You Have An Anti-Virus
Program (Like McAfee Or Norton) And Is It Up To Date? Have You Installed The Microsoft
Patch For The "Worm Virus" That Has Been Causing So Much Trouble? Do You Have A Windows
XP Firewall Set Up? If Not, You Should Have BOTH An Anti-Virus Program (I Preffer
McAfee Anti-Virus Version 7 - I Haven't Tested Version 8 Yet), And Be Using The Firewall
That Comes With Windows XP.

As Far As An "Un-Install", There Is NONE! Windows XP's System Restore Is Poor At
Best, So That's Not Much Of An Option Either. Let Me Know What's What, OK?

Thank you,

John A. Dixon
