Hi, I hate to say this but you may have to restore your system. When your system
is attact, be it from a Virus, Trojan horse etc.. files that are associated with
other programs may be corrupted. Therefore, I'm afraid, you will have to restore
your system. Try to copy any files or program and re-install after the reboot. I
strongly suggest that you purchase Norton System Works which includes Anti Virus
and Internet security. Not only can it detect worms etc.. and block them, but it
has programs that enable you to safely uninstall programs and check your system for
damage!

Hi,
See if the same happens when you trigger regedit! You can trigger regedit by clicking
on
start->Run->regedit (type it).
If the same happens, then you are infected by Yaha virus. You can go to http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/tools.list.html
and download the fix for yaha. This should work. It worked for me. However, I was
using win2000 Professional. See if you are lucky. good luck

Here's what I found...
I found a file hidding in a screen saver, I could not get rid of it by deleting it
the regular way. I shut down and rebooted in safe mode and searched the file, then
deleted it. Empty the recycle bin. Shut down and restart in regular mode. this solved
my problem.
I was going to give up, but a little good detective work and I found it.

Sorry for sounding annoying, but it would help to know the name of that screen saver
file.
Thanks,

This may be common knowledge by now, but i noticed I could not use regedit, msconfig,
or task manager because i was infected with some kind of virus... I downloaded a
few tools from symantec but nothing was detected.
To fix the problem I booted into safe mode, went to the windows\system32 folder and
found a series of files created around the time i noticed odd behavior. The main
file was MSConfig35.exe. there were a few other files with odd unintelligible names
surrounding it that I deleted too. I also found WebDav.exe in my Documents and Settings\All
Users\Programs\Startup folder, along with win88.exe, another small exe, and a TFT
file. All of which were deleted.
I then went into the registry and removed references to all of these files, THEN
went to microsoft and downloaded a patch that sealed up a hole that allowed an attack
to shut down my system using a buffer overrun to the RPC service, allowing an attacker
to wreck havoc on my system.
After doing all of this then rebooting, everything seems fine.. however even with
recent norton definitions installed, NAV did not catch this virus. I only noticed
it due to the fact I could not view task manager, regedit, or msconfig, plus the
RPC shutdown incident was kind of an alarm. Hope this helps if anyone else has this.

BYPASS Solution

Go to C:/Windows/System32 and rename the file "TASKMGR" to "TASKMGR.TXT" (Windows
will make another copy of it, so you dont have to worry). Double-click on TASKMGR.TXT
and it'll open your task manager without disappearing again. From there, you can
figure out what program is causing the problem by "end process" one by one.
Good luck.

I have this problem as well. I got the taskmgr.txt to come up. But, doing the end
processes one at a time didn't enable me to load it normally. Also, I learned that
my system restore was turned off.

Go to RUN--->type in "msconfig", and go to STARTUP tab, and Disable All. Then try
to bring task manager up again by CTRL+ALT+Del. If it doesnt' stay up, then something
in task manager has to be deleted.
If the SYSTEM CONFIGURATION UTILITY disappears after you typed "msconfig" too, then
you need to find MSCONFIG file (usualy in C:/WINDOWS/PCHEALTH/HELPCTR/Binaries) and
rename it to MSCONFIG.TXT {if your original file shows the extension of the file
too - MSCONFIG.exe - then you need to rename it to MSCONFIG.TXT.exe
Double click on MSCONFIG.TXT and disable all startups. You just need to figure out
what program prevents the task manager by allowing each program to STARTUP one-by-one.
After you find out, find and delete that program.

Basically, this is a seek and destroy mission. In my case, the virus was wuaumqr.exe.
Because you cant delete a file that is in use, and I didnt know what the file name
was yet, I rebooted into safemode to prevent all services and applications that didnt
need to be open from running. The first place I looked was \windows\system32. I
changed my view to Detailed, then added a Date Created column, and verified that
View System and Hidden Files was ticked. After sorting by the date created column
I noticed a file [wuaumqr.exe] that was created around the time I started having
the problem. After deleting this file, I entered MSCONFIG and looked under the Startup
tab - sure enough it was there, so I unchecked the box for it and continued the hunt.
I dont believe it is absolutely necessary to remove the registry keys, so if you
arent comfortable with it [keep in mind you can toast your computer by deleting the
wrong thing] I wouldnt touch it. Anyways, I searched around in my registry and found
the keys attached to it, which I promptly deleted.
For a full walkthrough on how to get rid of the bugger, visit my
page on removing it. The instructions are by BQM who followed the same path
I did, but describes how to do it without entering safe mode and using command prompt.
Remove the Virus!
Again, the other option is to do what I did:
Boot into safe mode [by pressing F8 while booting up] then find the virus [\windows\system32\WUAUMQR.exe]
make sure you have show hidden and sytem files checked [Tools->Folder Options->View
Tab] Delete the thing, then Start-> Run: msconfig. Choose the startup tab and uncheck
the box for wuaumqr.exe and restart like normal!

I just stumbled upon this thread about 10 minutes ago trying to find a fix to a
problem I was having.. Task Manager wouldn't stay open for more than a second, regedit
wouldn't open, and Spybot S&D wouldn't either. I kept opening Task Manager to try
and see if there was anything there that I didn't recognize. Since it stayed open
for only a split second it was hard, but I noticed 'Svchosts.exe' . Now normally
that program is 'svchost.exe' without the s isn't it? I noticed that both versions
were there, so the 'svchosts.exe' looked awful fishy. I used my godlike clicking
powers to open task manager and amazingly end the svchosts.exe before task manager
closed. It took me about 20 tries but finally I was able to do it fast enough.. and
what do you know? Task Manager stayed open. Reg edit opened also. (;
I went to my system32 folder and viewed icons by date and guess what? The svchosts.exe
file was one of the three newest there... so I deleted it. I used Spybot to delete
that command from my startup as well.
Hope this helps. If it does then please let me know at AuraPainter@hotmail.com
I'm a layman, I want to know if I have been of any use.

Same here.. I have been having trouble with taskmanager and regedit not staying open.
I started digging, finally I found svehost.exe in the system32 directory.NOTE it
is svEhost.exe ... NOT svChost .. It was created at the same time as keylog.txt.
I am running a scan at the moment, but I suspect thisis the problem. You can do a
command prompt for taskmanager by typing 'tasklist' at a dos prompt. Also 'taskkill'
will end a process.
I am a so-called 'expert' and I found your posting useful..
Cheers,
Tim

Changed taskmgr

While I was away over the weekend my sister decided to do a few things. Now the taskmgr
only shows a window with some of the running programs. There are no buttons and it
does not show the amount of CPU time taken up by programs. There is also no graph
option available showing the CPU and memory loads. Also pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL twice
brings up 2 of these windows while originally it would only allow 1 taskmgr. Anyone
know what is going on and how to fix it?

Wicked!! - Worked for me too.. basically renamed TASKMGR to TASKMGR.TXT and then
started closing programs. I checked all processes in google and all came up with
explanations apart from MDIGITS.exe.
Removed that then renamed it back to TASKMGR and now it opens from control bar. Regedit
also started working. But now i want to ask .. how the hell did it get there and
how do i remove the actual program that installed it since what is stopping it staring
up again next time i boot.
Any help will be appreciated.

So this thread has been going for 2 years??
I had the task manager / msconfig/ regedit not working problem and did a lot of internet
research on the problem and only just now (after 2 days) fixed it. The final step
that worked for me (as recommended above) was going to the system32 folder and deleting
recently created files. I deleted about 10 files, held my breath hoping I had not
deleted something critical, and rebooted.... seems to be ok and task mgr finally
starts normally. I ALSO DISCOVERED A KEYSTROKE LOG IN THERE!! every keystroke recorded!
very disturbing....
Steps I took -
renamed task mgr and msconfig files. This allowed me to run the programs but obviously
didn't solve the real problem.
Ran Adaware and spybot search and destroy
In safe mode, tried several antivirus scans. Panda turned up 5 viruses (trojans).
subby.b qhost.m
trojanvundo (norton turned this one up, used symantec's trojanvundo removal tool)
I tried to document everything I did, but now 2 days later I seem to have a pile
of scribbled notes.
So, I SEEM to have solved my problem, finally by manually deleting files in the system32
folder, but I am still concerned about that log file. Thanks for the help. MJ
