Question about 'Why don't folders remember their position, sort order, or icon size?'

Why do my desktop icons revert to the left side of the screen after log out and log in? I have a photo centered as my wall paper and place the desktop icons to either side of the photo. When log out and back in or boot up, all icons shift to left side of screen as if auto arrange is activated.

I think your answer is that you have your desktop options set to "Auto Arrange."
Right click on the desktop,
select "Arrange Icons..."
and make sure "Auto Arrange" is not checked.

Are you using any desktop control software installed with your video driver? Especially from Matrox or ATI? Do you have an icon in the "task tray"?

I have had the same problem. When I reboot, my machine starts up with Auto Arrange checked. I uncheck it every time, but each time I start my machine it is checked again. VERY annoying.

No. I do not have auto arrange turned on. I have been using Wintidy to make icons stay where I put them, but sometimes I have to remind them where they are supposed to be. My Windows 2000 Pro machine doesn't have this problem, they stay where I put them. (the icons)

If the desktop is treated by Windows XP as a folder, then the answer may be the same as or related to discussions of why Windows does not remember folder views. One of these is at http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/1027162603

I have the same problem. Whenever I restart or boot up my icons all arrange in the upper left hand corner. Auto arrange is never checked. Did anybody here find an answer??

>answer?? You may wish to look this over, and decide it it's worth trying. It is from the site cited at the end. ""(...) sometimes Win XP refuses to remember your folder settings, even when the checkbox "Remember each folder's view settings" is checked. By default, Windows XP remembers the last 400 folder settings. After 400, it's supposed to discard the oldest settings, so that it always remembers the most recent 400. In some cases, however, it just stops remembering new settings when the number of settings hits 400. The steps that follow will clear all your old folder settings so Windows XP can remember more, and also raises the limit higher than 400. Here's what you do. * First, roll up your sleeves and launch Regedit. * Navigate to the Registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ Shell. If this key is not present, skip to the next Registry key listed in the procedure. * If a subkey named BagMRU is present, delete the entire subkey. * If a subkey named Bags is present, delete the entire subkey. * Look for a value named BagMRU Size (with a space between BagMRU and Size). * If this value is not present, select New, DWORD Value from the Edit menu and name the new value BagMRU Size. * Double-click on the BagMRU Size value, choose Decimal, and enter the desired number of folder settings for Win XP to remember (for example, 1,000). * Navigate to the Registry key HKEY_ CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ ShellNoRoam. * If present, repeat the earlier deletions. * That should cure Windows XP's faulty memory. The OS will "forget" all existing folder settings, but from this point onward, it should remember them correctly." copied from: http://www.toejumper.net/speed5/winex5.htm

My display screen keeps shifting to the left. I have adjusted [centered] the Horizontal & vertical size/positioning, yet it keeps reverting back. Any info re a resolution would be greatly appreciated. Many Thanks, M.

ATI icon in the "task tray?" What was Simon getting at by that? After trying the registry hack mentioned on the page, and, after that didn't work, making sure that all of my file permissions for "Desktop" were good--again no help--I thought again about your question which got no response. I disabled "Enable System Tray Menu" in the "Preferences" menu of ATI's Catalyst Control Center, put one desktop icon off to the side leaving a gap, and after a reboot, voila! It was the same way as before. Now I can put my icons anywhere I please on my desktop, something I haven't been able to do for as long as I can remember! Thanks a million!!!
