XP system freeze

I made the mistake of waxing lyrical to a couple of people about how good XP was. I think it was listening at the time, and now my computer is having problems! Basically I am getting full freezes. I can't move the mouse or ctrl+alt+delete - only reset will let me restart. It happens at different times, sometimes at startup, or when using the computer. Always seemingly at random and without any warning. Is it possible that ambient temperature could cause this? It was very humid and warm last night, and when I switched off the pc for a bit, the freeze seemed to be a fair bit longer in coming. Any help would be much appreciated. Many thanks.

with these symptoms, it's almost certain to be an overheating or power supply issue
rather than the operating system.

Thanks Jeff. I am leaning towards it being overheating, because my PC is in a small cubby hole I made for it under the stairs. It can get a bit hot in there, and last night I was sweating just sitting there. And no, it had nothing to do with the websites I was visiting! I did spend a bit of money on a really good CPU heatsink and fan, and the power supply is quite new. I also have a case fan installed. But my hunch is that you're right.

try using a fan to stir up the air in your cubby hole, that might help.

Thanks Jeff, I'll get something sorted tonight. Now then, I'm sure there are a couple of desk fans in the office that no-one would miss... ;-)

I had a very similar problem w/lockups of mouse and keyboard on my XP Pro system. It had been very trouble free until then. So I restored a Drive Image from before that did not have Norton AV 2002 on it since I had heard of conflicts with it and XP. Since that works fine I added AVG antivirus and so far (1 week) no problems. ...Wayne
