Windows XP

Hi. I assembled a hp pavillion computer for a friend. It has windows xp.
Recently it stopped booting windows - it just keeps on starting the boot process
over and over and over and never completes it.
I'm trying to get to dos or windows safe mode - on one screen it says safe mode,
safe mode with network support, command prompt but when I select one of them - it
just goes back to the booting process again.
I can't get to windows or dos to check it for viruses or bad registry.
What is the xp safe mode keys and is a floppy the only way I can get to dos?
Thanks much.
John

What's in the system? A little more detail would be helpful. What processor? What
MoBo? On board video? Sound? Modem? What kind of drives? NTFS or FAT32 file system?

There is a problem just being discovered about HDs that were once loaded by HP and
then fdisked to prapare for a clean install.. Fdisk is NOT preparing the HD correctly
for some unknown reason and simply reformatting doesn't help either. This might
be your problem from what I am finding out. Post back if you want more info.. C
K :-)

Hi, and thanks for the response. All I know is it is a mass market hp sold by walmart
but it does have onboard video, usb, and sound. I'm going out there shortly and
try to get it to boot to the cdrom and see what I can find out.
if that doesn't work - he'll have to call a pro.
Thanks again.
