re: Question about 'Getting Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to work with PPPoE'

yep, this will work.
you can right-click on your dial up entry and share it (share tab).
how is the w98 pc connected? via a hub or via a direct network cable? does this existing
connection work i.e. can you browse the network and see the other machine.
after enabling ICS on host, reboot w98 pc. it should then configure its IP, DNS and
gateway addresses automatically (via universal PnP feature). in IE on W98 leave TCP
settings to "obtain IP automatically" etc and it *should* just work.
this is no good for VPN (teleworking) though.
try typing ipconfig at "dos/cmd" prompt on both pcs to check ip addresses are in
same range.
otherwise - no idea but hey this is the 1st time i've seen this site b4 !!

Actually I have just thought of something. I am not 100% sure that 98se supports
universal plug and play (search google for UPnP). it is possible that this only came
in with ME. if this is the case, you may need to assign each network card a static
IP address, typically n the range 134.168.0.[1-2] (or something like that).
what you are proposing will work but you need to check the IP configuation.
There are other products about that also do this, such as sygate (www.sygate.com)
or wingate. They offer much more control & functionality but if you can't get ICS
working, you may also struggle with these 3rd party products.

The problem with getting a router is that if you want to use a single computer on
your network as a firewall. It is expensive to by firewall licenses to all of your
machines, if they are all going to connect through a router instead of a firewall
machine.
