It sounds as if you hadf done an up- grade. If it is not there, oh well. back up
the data and do a clean install, booting to the Windows XP CD and partitiononing
anbd formatting. Stop the install after formatting if you are going to install another
version of Windows.

Try downloading a free program called X-SETUP
It has over 700+ tweaks and the very last
(or next to the last) in the \System\userdata\...
is has a Windows update registration option
which can be enabled or disabled.
Play with it and see if that can help u.
