Question about 'Set Defaults in Explorer'

Posted by jesus malverdes (1 messages posted)

My new XP Home edition folders did the same thing ... just like Win95 Gold ... haha! ... only 8 years later :) So I installed TweakUI for XP v2.00.100 which didn't help at all, and in fact caused other problems too. So I finally tried TweakUI v1.33 for 95/98/Me/NT/2000 in my XP Home edition and it works great! :) Stopped all that folder size, details, and icon changing ... well almost anyway. I hate to say this but my XP Home is buggier than Win95 Gold ever was. I'd wait for XP SE now if i could.

I guess the same the Explorer does for many users - it changes settings by itself.
For example, here on my machine I have a shortcut to Explorer in my quick icons on
the task bar. After I installed Win XP, I put it there. I opened up Explorer via
it, selected the settings I prefer (status bar, Detail, unchecked all those silly
"do not show file extension", "do not show system files" etc. crap) and chose "apply
to all folders". Worked as designed, from then on whenever I opened Explorer, it
had the settings I wanted. But for some silly reason, every now and then I get the
"symbols" view when opening up Explorer, or the status bar suddenly is not shown
anymore. I really cannot figure out WHY Win XP does that, it just does. I *never*
change the settings myself, Windows does it on its own.

I've got a somewhat similar problem with my XP Corporate version. My folders open up in their own window instead of the same window. Real pain in the ass when I'm using 2 monitors and have 4 programs open. And I don't want to hear go to folder options in control panel-general,Browse folders and tick the "open each folder in the same window" button. Believe me I've tried it. Also, when I go to file types (in the same applet) and highlight file folder or folder and then click on advanced...the browse in same window is unchecked and grayed out. Actually, alot of those file types in that list don't give me that option. I don't want to have to reinstall again. I've tried everything short of beating my neighbor up, but I'm not sure if that will fix my problem anyways. Keetone

Ok i finally fixed that same window problem with opening folders. But do any of you wizards know why opening folders or starting internet explorer takes 6-10 seconds on my computer when it should be instantaneous. How come if I do it through StartMenu\Run or from inside the folder that came up slow I run a program or load a subfolder and it still loads nearly instantaneously? I have only McAfee SecurityCenter hiding in my tray and even if i turn that off I still get this weird pause. I checked my registry but to be honest i don't know what to look for.

I just deleted all the file types that dont open in the same window and unistalled IE6. Then reboot and reinstall IE6. Worked fine. All files now open in the same window.

Try going to tools then file options then the view tab and uncheck Automaticaly search for network folders and printers. If your not on a network it should be ok. Also there is a site with lots of tweaks http://www.tweakxp.com/tweakxp/

I had made a "Prin.bat" to print a directory listing to Notepad and somehow got my folders opening in new windows and could not correct it! Typing NONE in for the Value Data in the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell string fixed it instantly! Thanks a ton, Gary!

none of these solutions worked, but i solved the problem myself. the problem is that under "Options > File Types" i had two behaviors, "Explore" and "Open." "Open" is what makes the folders open in a new window, no matter what you set in the "Options" menu, TweakUI, Xteq X-Setup, etc. you have to set "Explore" as the DEFAULT option, instead of "Open." then everything will work as planned. i cannot WAIT until my Apple PowerBook arrives next week, no more of this Microsoft programmer nonsense.

I tried all this and nothing worked. I finally found a quick fix easy solution. All you need to do is get into someones computer that has folder options working as you want it to then go to registry, export and email the following registry keys to yourself: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory and HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder. All you need to do then is add these keys to your registry by double clicking on them. I hope this helps, coz it fixed it for me and I tried everything before that. This should save you a lot of time.:-)

Thhaaaaaannnnkkkk YOOOOOOUUUUU!!!!!!! To clarfiy, all you do is modify the actual Directory\Shell\ value from Open to NONE. Works great! (Backup your Reg before you mess it with BTW!)

It worked for me. Windows XP folders would not open in the same window.

run 'regedit'
hk_classes_root\directory\shell
right click on 'default' , selet 'modify'
Type in 'None' without parentehsis.

It shouldn't have gone wrong in the first place, though. Thanks for the help.

Um... if, by chance, you check this forum again for whatever reason, I have this same problem, but I think I might have screwed it up beyond repair. I set the default to "open" instead of "find," because my ORIGINAL problem was that, all of the sudden, my folder windows all opened to "search." I don't know what I did to make THAT happen, but I fixed it by setting the defualt to open- now they will NOT open in the same window... a little help?

Yes...I tried to change an icon in 'file types' in folder options and then it would only open folders to search, so I changed the folder action to explorer.exe, but then (after I did something in the shell file maybe) when I open a new folder it opens a new window. And at the left (when I open my computer or something) it opens a folders tab instead of displaying the 'my computer' options.. I tried what someone said but it didn't work.
