Question about 'Can't access some websites while using a shared PPPoE connection'

I have a question about Can't access some websites while using a shared PPPoE connection:

Ok I got a problem that no one else seems to have encountered. If someone has and I haven't checked thru the previous post thouroughly enough........sorry. Ok here goes.

I have 2 computers, both running Win XP Pro. They are directly connected via a Crossover cable, and one of them has a DSL modem attached (correctly set up). I have set up the LAN and configured ICS to work........but it didn't.

When I tried to access the net, I couldn't get to any sites. I found this post and tried to do the MTU fix. ANyway, i pinged the host and the higest MTU I got was 1454. Anyway, I changed the appropriate value in the registry, restarted the computer......and tried to access the net again. To my surprise that didn't work.

I brought the command prompt up again and pinged the host again. This time I found that the MTU value I previously set (1454) didn't work anymore. The "new" value was 1426. I then restarted, and tried to access the internet from the client again. And again, I couldn't. This time when I pinged the host the MTU that worked (got a reply) was 1398.

Every time I set the MTU to the new value, when I tried again I wouldn't be able to access the net and the MTU that I could get a response from the host with would have dropped again. I don't know if this has any bearing on the problem, but each new MTU value was always 28 less than the previous one. Isn't that the size of the packet header or something?

Anyway, suffice it to say that I am extremely stumped. If there is anyone out there that can help me, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks, Matt.

P.S. By the way, I have made sure that the host computer actually has its connection to the net running when I try this (just in case you thought the problem was on the hosts end).

Download this application:
http://www.dslreports.com/front/drtcp.html to the computer you are having problems
with. Run it, select your Ethernet card in the drop down menu, set the MTU to say
1472. Close the application, and reboot. Make sure the MTU on the server as back
to the default of 1500 and 1480 for the PPPoE adapter.
