Question about 'Set Defaults in Explorer'

I have a question about Set Defaults in Explorer:

This work's, and work's well, but how do I get explorer to 'remember' the default view that I'm setting? I'm trying to get it to remember to use the 'folder' bar, and the setting won't stick.

Try this set up explore the way you want it then Right click on the Blue title bar
select "Close" from the drop down menu while holding down the "CTRL" key
it is said that this forces Windows to remember your preferrences ??

It has sometimes works for me

Cheers HC

Setting all folders to look like the "current" folder (as described in the tip) works fine, UNLESS you also have a check mark in the box below the "like the current folder " button which says "remember each folder's view settings". If that box is checked and you ever change the display view of a folder, the change "sticks" for that folder, until the next time you ripple "all like the current folder" through the system. To get things to come up the way you want them, do the following: (1) Set Explore as the default command (not OPEN) for the "folder" type. (2) Make sure that "hidden" files are shown, not hidden (3) Make sure extensions (.exe etc) are shown, not hidden. (4) Set the current explaorer window to show you "details" or whatever you really want to see (including widths of name fields, size fields etc.) (5) Make sure "Remember Each Folder's View Settings" is NOT checked. (6) Ripple using the "Like Current Folder" button. By the way, certain "special" folders, like "Control Panel" will not be corretly set up this way (vs field width etc.) open them, set them the way you want them, then ripple via "like current folder" ... it won't clobber you default setup for everything else!

To solve this issue :

1. Start REGEDIT.EXE
2. Delete ALL subkeys under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU\
(usually you will find here a maximum of 5 or 6 entries)
3. Delete ALL subkeys under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags\
(there might be a lot, up to 400)
4. Close REGEDIT.EXE
5. Open and customize each Explorer’s specific folder you wish (My Documents, Recycle
Bin, My Computer, Printers, Network Connections, Control Panel,…), then close it
: it will again open each time with your defined size, position and columns

Hi, I have a similar problem. Actually it's the exact opposite problem. I don't want settings to be remembered for each folder, so I have (and have always had) that option turned off. Even so, Explorer appears to ignore my wishes and remembers each folder setting anyway! I even followed your advice:

But after going into a folder and changing the column widths, I went back into Regedit
and there it was, Explorer saved the appearance of that folder in the registry when
it wasn't supposed to!

I have experienced this problem with various versions (XP, 2000, IE5.0, IE5.5, IE6.0)
with and without various service packs.

Anyone else experienced this?

Klitos

Thanks! That is EXACTLY the answer I've wanted since we moved to XP! Why Microsoft thinks you don't EVER want the "explorer bar" to show up is beyond me! If I want to look at drive/folder contents, I'm usually wanting to move/change things. I surely do miss the old DOS5 dosshell program &/or PCTools PCShell program! You'd think Microsoft would have gotten a clue after all these years.

I, too, have experienced what I believe your describing. In short, I've tried all the tips (delete ".../BAGS", etc) and still can't get Explorer to behave. The deleted keys just come back along with my problems. I'm trying to get all folders, everywhere, everytime to open with the same Explorer view setttings. I upgraded from XP Home to XP Pro...I hope that doesn't have anything to do with it...

I am wondering if there is a way to set the folder view to be like the "my computer" folder view? I like the way it sorts items into groups and can find no way to use it on other folders. I find a lot of ways to disable it but not how to expand its use. I like the way it sorts items.

I'm having this problem, but I'm worried about deleting stuff in the registry. I'm not totally clear what he means by deleting the subkeys. Does he mean deleting the stuff in the right window pane when the BagMRU key is selected? Or does he mean delete everything underneath BagMRU (when you hit the plus sign) in the left pane? Or both?

I would add the last “set default“ action (in parentheses): To get things to come up the way you want them, do the following: (1) Set Explore as the default command (not OPEN) for the "folder" type (hit the “set default“ button to save the choice).

Between tech-speak and (at times) poor grammar, I had a hard time following any of
the suggestions above to solve this. But then I happily ran into this easy fix-it
(which I think is the same as one above, I just didn't understand it the way it was
described - this is much easier):

"Ever wish 'My Computer' would Explore instead of Open?"

When you double-click on My Computer, it never shows the folders or Explorer
bar. When you right-click on My Computer and Explore, it does. Here’s how to make
Explore the default choice:
Double-click on My Computer, go to Tools, Folder Options, File Types, and find
the file type of FOLDER with extension of (NONE). Click Advanced, Explore, Set Default.
To imagine the possibilities, look at Advanced for the .DOC extension and see how
to create your own.

Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value called 'NoSaveSettings' set the value to equal '0'. [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer Value Name: NoSaveSettings Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value) Value Data: (0 = disabled, 1 = enabled)

Thanks XPGhost, that helped as did the bag trick, but with thousands of folders to set it is still a nightmare. Does anyone know where MickySoft hides it's default for this? jb
