Then the screen blinks, and then I get this:

STOP: C000021a {Fatal System Error} The Session Manager Initialization system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc000003a (0x00000000 0x00000000). The system has been shut down.

I'm typing this from another computer, BTW. Any idea as to how t o fix this?

What preceeded the problem or did it just come out of the blue? I would boot from the cd and try to repair the installation. Did you try holding down F8 and select "last known good"?

Well, this problem occurred after I split up my hard drive into two partitions (so I could install a 2nd OS).

Yes, I did use PartitionMagic7. And I know about the installation problem with the xmnt2001.exe. But, I'm getting that solved (possibly).

But, I still need a solution for the autochk.exe problem.

I had the same problem. To fix it you have to use a third party boot loader - eg., Bootmagic.

I tried to install Linux with Grub on the second partition. After I set Grubs partition (2) as active I received this error - xp doesn't start at all. With PMagic7 I set first Partition as active and unhidden. XP starts but I have to find a way with grub...

well there's some good news and some bad news.... the good news is all your files and everything are most likely still there. the bad news is your partition is probably hidden now and the only way to unhide it is to reinstall windows from scratch. at least thats what happened to me with this problem. good luck

I could solve the problem correctly.

To make the WinXP partition unhidden, you can use fdisk command from Linux.
Linux fdisk can change the partition label, e.g. from hidden NTFS to (unhidden) NTFS.

The operation can be done with some Linux boot FD.

I had the same problem, if your trying to dual boot with Linux it hides your NTFS partition with your Windows XP on it. As part of the boot process chkdsk calls for autochk.exe and because your partition is hidden it can't find it and gives you the error message. You can either use a Linux Boot Disk if you are comfortable with Linux or you can do what I did and use partition magic 8 and boot from the CD run partition magic and unhide you partition. You might have to run the Recovery Console in XP to recreate your MBR and boot sector etc

The hidden Windows partition is easy to fix. Just run 'grub' from /boot, provided you have installed this partition. type: unhide (hd0,0) If you're not sure the device name required by 'unhide', check /boot/grub/grub.conf Restart and Windows will boot.

Sanlihe, I suspect your solution is only for Linux, but I hope you'll forgive my ability restricted to DOS & windows. I run WinXP-h on a homebrew i850 overclocked P4-2.0A. After installing a new HDD -- the estimable WD600JB, (cloned it from a Barracuda-iv)-- I decided to resize partitions and place page file off of primary. I used PM7. I can forgive that *none* of the changes I thought I'd implemented with PM7 appeared after reboot, but now I too am greeted with error "xmnt2001 program not found... skipping autocheck" just prior to WinXP-h completing its loading. WinXP seems to be fine aside from this 5 second message on cold or warm boots. I made PM rescue floppys (as well as a system Restore point ) prior to the PM 7 activity. Please advise: ought I to use the Rescue Floppies, or Sys Restore, or some other remedy? Thank you!

I fixed this problem using (c)fdisk under Linux. All I had to do was boot from a Linux CD-ROM, start cfdisk, and change the type of the WinXP file system from 0x17 (Hidden HPFS/NTFS) to 0x7 (HPFS/NTFS).

I have also seen this, recently with new XP updates that hit my office. Several people shut down the auto update during the install and were left with the same error. Could not log in, admin password bad, last known good did not work, and no "safe mode" Here is the fix! Get your XP CD and boot from it Do not go into recovery console, choose "Set Up" Hit F8 (only after reading all the mumbo jumbo!) Choose Repair, "R" WindowsXP will then copy the installation files to your Hard Drive, whole thing takes about 45 minutes or so. It runs similar to SYSPREP, you will need to put a CD KEY in, but all settings should remain in tact. If you are on a domain, don't choose it from the setup. Wait until after (it should retain this anyway, you might not have to put this in). The only problem I found was that my ADMIN TOOLS needed to be reinstalled for Active Directory. Let me know if this helps! Mike

I have the same problem with Linux and XP. Redhat boots, XP didn't boot until I put a space in chainloader *space* +1. Now it gives me that error. I will try everything said here and will let people know. What is an alternative to a win xp disk? I don't have mine at the moment. Mike how did you activate HD0? Thanks

Ok, I have a similar problem to this, and have reinstalled windows many times, and replaced many hardware items. I get the "C000021a {Fatal System Error}" I dont have the wording down but i do have the #'s (0xc0000005 (0x00000000 0x00000000) I have done many clean installs, but i still get this problem... I have switched HD's, Motherboards, Ram, new Heatsink/Fan (lowered temps by 10 degrees), new drive cables, still the same issue, any ideas?

I have a similar problem with XP Pro. When useing Power Quest Drive Image 2002 and
Partion Magic 8. Can create an image of XP Pro. But when restoring, the image it
boots to the XP splash screeen and lingers a bit longer than normal and then switches
to a blue screen withe message: Autochk program not found skipping AUTOCHECK

Lingers for a moment then switches to a darker blue screen with the following message:

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The Session Manager Initialization system process terminated unexpectedly
with a status of
0xc000003a (0x00000000 0x00000000).
The system has been shut down

I have persued this matter with both Microsoft and PowerQuest.

PQ had me run a debug program and ship my image disks to them. Results inconclusive.

MS seems to think it is a hardware issue.

Although I prefer PQ Drive Image I have bought and am useing Norton Ghost for system
backup images.

No problems with Norton Ghost, can create and restore images at will.

Bear in mind please, other than what is mentioned above, my XP Pro functions perfectly.
Can make clean installs with perfect boot cycles.

Also, I run Win 2000 Pro on a seperate partition on this same computer and encounter
non of the above with w2K Pro.

I ran into the same problems with autochk and C000021a, etc when setting up PQ's BootMagic... I was able to recover fully by over-riding BootMagic auto-visibility on my XP-Home partition (manually setting the visibility properties for NTFS, Pri-1, in my case). I'm just glad I found this thread and was able to piece together what I needed to do. M$ and PQ sites were a bust.

Thanks for the tip, it also worked for me. My problems occured when I used PartitionMagic 8.0 and tried to to create a new partition for installing Linux. I recived an error but the partitions were there so I installed Linux (that worked fine). When I then tried to boot XP I got the described error. Unfortunatly did I first tried to fix the problem by creating repear disketts from MS (because it is a known bugg that you can't use the re-installtion cd and use option R, because it doesn't accept a given adminstrator password) and tried to used the disketts. That didn't solve the problem so I used Google and find your tip. But as you mentioned, it is important to check the /boot/grub/grub.conf file to get write divice info.

I had a similar problem on my dell laptop. Luckily it was a dual boot and I was able to boot into linux to solve the problem. apparently, for me at least, my drive fs type was changed, not the actual structure, but just what it reports, so instead of ntfs it was hfbs/ntfs or something.. i used cfdisk to change it back to ntfs, rebooted, everything was gravy.

Por fin alguien que sabe algo : )))) Thanks a lot Roger. I had a similar problem but my system do was able to boot my w2k after the annoying message in the black screen. That's the kind of solution I was looking for just to get rid of the boot up message. I had been trying to find the right key with RegHance when I found your posting. Clever, neat and simple. ; )

Try "info grub" in RH. GRUB is the most powerful bootloader I've ever seen.

Hi guys- I have a similar problem, only with a couple more complications. I have suse linux 9.0 and XP. A power cut half way thorugh Pmagic NTFS resize meant that I terminated the resize prematurely. Consequently, when booting XP, I have the autochk + xmnt2001 errors and then the Pc reboots. I can't change the Part Table Type to 07 from 3C using ptedit.exe (PowerQuest) cos it says unable to write changes. Also, I can't modify the dirve using GRUB since Linux 9 doesn't support the SATA drive on which my XP resides. Safe mode doesn't boot either. I can see the files I need in Recovery mode (XP CD boot) but I have no access to them to copy them etc. Any ideas (other than getting suse 9.1)?

A WINDOWS-ONLY SOLUTION I had the same problem, and solved it thanks to this thread. I triple-boot Win98, W2k & XP. (No Linux). Win98 is on the C-drive fat32 partition, W2k & XP are on other NTFS partitions. I use the simple Windows boot menu to select OS (no Bootmagic). After using Drive Image 2002 to restore an image of the C drive partition (to fix a problem which had crept into my Win98 setup), I got the 'autock program not found' and automatic shut down whenever I tried booting to XP. From this thread I realised the problem was that the XP partition had been 'hidden' by Drive Image. My solution was to boot from a set of Partition Magic floppies and then use PM to unhide both the NTFS boot partitions - W2k & XP. HTH George D

I need help with a similar problem... i am not at all familiar with linux... i used partitionmagic to create a linux partition (AFTER C:) and then booted up with openbsd 3.8... after getting to the install screens and hitting a few buttons i decided to not install it because i wasn't sure of what i was doing... so i exited the installer and tried booting back into windows so I could read up more on the installation of openbsd 3.8, now i am getting the error "The session Manager Initialization system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc000003a" From here i tried booting back into the Openbsd but wasn't sure the command to use in openbsd or if i should go to shell, try installing, or upgrade (MY only 3 choices), Right now i tried Install and im sitting at a fdisk: 1> console ... Please what do i type next to unhide my partition or what can i do to get it back... Thanks in advance - {DBD}Cobra

Thanks for the great fix! Fired up Knoppix CD, went to the cmdln and used cfdisk. Changed to partition type to 0x07 and viola - WinXP on reboot! Cheers!

"autock program not found - skipping autocheck" When trying to get into my computer I received this the above message and than the computer shut down and repeat the same message, and I was unable to start Windows XP.

I have had this happen on two different Dells that were pretty much the same. I think
it is Nortons GoBack that is doing it. Same thing fixes it as if you did it loading
Linux. Boot with a Linux disk and change the boot partition with cfdisk to 07 instead
of 017 effectively unhiding the partition. Damn Norton crap.

6 years after your post, your answer relieved my grief and solved my problem. I had the same problem on Windows 2003 server x64. I booted from a system rescue cd (gentoo based), ran gparted and saw indeed that the partition was hidden. I unflagged the partition with gparted, applied the change and rebooted. This time Windows booted just fine, no blue stop screen with that arcane error. Many, many thanks for your post.

Same here. I almost had a heart attack and thought that I lost some data and messed winxp up because of this PM 8.0 crash. Answer was in a 6 year old post =)

With all the new windows patches that were coming up I figured I sure finally install Service Pack 3 using all the instructions from windows - it froze - dumb reason was I'm moving from DSL to area that only has ATT that supposed work there - big joke 1 bar and two nearby towers that are on the ATT map at store are supposed to be line of sight. Other I figured after 3 being released so long ago it would have the bugs worked out. NOPE. Getting the can't locate autochk and get the blue screen c000021a error. Need laptop - disabled but used to teach computer programming at a college. Stroked so one handed typer, no vision in Left side of each eye- global ok but have to try to scan full pages and usually can't - so small columns answers best. Now I can get only to start and F8 and nothing works.
