Question about 'Connect to a Windows XP or 2000 system with a Windows 95, 98, or Me system over a Network'

I have a question about Connect to a Windows XP or 2000 system with a Windows 95, 98, or Me system over a Network:

I have a WinXP system and a Win98 system. They are networked together and everything works fine, except the printing. We can share files and the internet connection. The printer, a Brother MFC-7300C, is connected to the WinXP computer and it works fine there. But when the Win98 computer sends a file to print, it will not print. We can open the Printer from the control panel on the WinXP and see the file in the printer trying to print. So I guess that means the file makes it to the XP computer. But under status it says "Error- Printing". The Win98 system thinks its file has printed. But the file will sit on the Printer until it is canceled on the WinXP computer. Unless the file is canceled the XP system can't print anything. The printer is shared correctly (I think) because we were able to set it up on the Win98 machine, it shows up there. But it just won't print. Any suggestions on this one?

Try removing the print device from the 98 box. Look at the network and find the shared printer right click and select install, when it mentions that it already has drivers say no, use the 98 drivers.

Thanks...but that didn't do it. I tried just what you suggested. I wonder if the problem is in the XP machine, if something is not set right there. It seems as if it is. I've set up many different network printers so I know the steps. Just can't figure this one out.

I'm having the same problem with XP and a brother printer (MFC 8600) neither XP or 98 systems can connect via the network but it works fine on the local machine. Maybe you managed to find a solution to this one? And, hooray, Brother doesn't supply updated drivers on it's web site! May just have to use different machine with old o.s. as the print server, but very annoying.

FIXED.. simply apply xp service pack 1. You need the new dll localspl.dll. If you dont want to download the 150megb svce pack then get the file from an already patched xp machine. Youll find it in the system32 folder. Cheers! The problem is due to the remote pc using the guest account and not having authority to access the port on the Xp PC.

Trevor, my problem is similar but reversed. I have a printer connected to an Win98 PC. And I am trying to print over a network from a WinXP PC. The printer is all set up, but the Win98 PC gives an error saying the printer may already be in use. Do you have any suggestion?

I don't know how many of you still have this problem, but I found a fix that seems to work. Go here: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314073.... Follow the instructions and use a print driver for an MFC 9700. I have a MFC 8300 and tried a generic printer driver and then to the MFC 6000 driver. This printed documents with simple graphics (have not tried anything big yet), but the only DPI option was 300x300. Took a stab at the MFC 9700 and got a 600x600 option. My letterhead jpg in Word looked crisp. You obviously loose plenty of functionality, but at least you don't loose a network printer. Oh, my 8300 is hooked to an old 95 print server and the xp station is a laptop. I had to update the xp driver list so that the 9700 showed up. I am semi-happy now. I would however, think twice about another Brother MFC solution. -out-

As near as I can tell, that's impossible. NT (including XP) can host a print share, and Win9x can print to it, but the reverse never works. The NT/XP system can connect to a fileshare on the Win9x system, proving that the network stuff is setup correctly, but connecting to a Win9x print share always fails.

I guess I didn't know any better - I have been running a network of 3 W2K, 1 XP and an old 98. The 98 has the primary printer (HP Laserjet 1100) shared and everyone can print to it. Never had a problem. Printer port is \\server\sharename Why do you think this should not work?

you can print from 98 or 95 to xp or 2000. what i mean is connect your printer to xp or 2000 (if you dont have any problem with it!) then it will work.

I had a similar problem trying to connect an XP machine over a wireless network to a Win 2000 machine with the MFC-8600 printer. The XP machine could not see the printer and it was not an available option in the drivers dialog. Then I manually entered (in the ADD PRINTER dialog box/ADD Network Printer.) //homeoffice/brotherMFC8600/9650 (homeoffice being the network name) Voila...printing fine. Cheers

I've been down both these holes (!). The XP/2000 machine will need to XP/2000 drivers loaded if it is to print to the WIN98 hosted printer and vice versa. But it is possible, we have 2 XP machines printing to a windows 98 machine's printer. I got the error message trying to print from WIN98 to a printer on a XP Pro box...so I'll try the service pack trick. But it is a bag of jam, especially when the customer is watching!!!

Well I'm having the same problem as described above, with 2 XP Sp2 machines and a Brother 7820N multifunction printer. When I check the printer que on the box that printer is connected to all I get is an error printing and it seems that the machine I am trying to print from is logging as a guest. I have searched everywhere and this place has been the only one with something close to what I have been looking for, even though it is a few years old.
