Its a sad thing, but Microsoft made absolutely sure XP would not function with IE
removed. So you're out of luck. The add-remove programs will only remove the shortcuts
to IE, not the browser itself. Microsoft responsed to the DoJ by completely not
listening to them and going against what they ordered. What happens to MS, nothing.

If someone wrote it in, someone can write it out, I may not know the answer, but
it can be done.

You can disable Internet Explorer almost completely if you want to. You don't remove
it but rather set all file permissions to "No Access" for all copies of "MSHTML.DLL"
on your system. With Netscape or another browser installed you should then be fine.
One thing may not work, if links in documetns like PDF or WORD files point to IE
and not yourdefault broswer to open them then such external links may not work when
clicked.

I've actually run IE-off in WinXP, and it does work, sort of. The only thing that
wouldn't work afterwards was parts of Control panel, (because it uses IE snap-ins)
but hey, who needs that, right? LOL

Try this:
Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs
Click on the button on the left vertical edge that says:
Set Program Access and Defaults
Click on the drop down arrow on the right end of the line that says "Custom". Under
"Choose a Default Web Browser:", select your alternate browser name (Mozilla) and
then remove the check mark from the box next to Internet Explorer. Then click OK
at the bottom.
That should fix it....if not i have a batch script to disable IE that i can post
if requested.

Please do post that batch file up.
I want to remove IE as it seems to be a backdoor with 101 vunerabilites, Iam pretty
sure my machine would be more secure without it.

Does the batch file remove IE completely or does it just remove user access to the
IE functions. If the functionality remains wouldn't the security issues also remain?

It is possible to completely remove Internet Explorer integration from XP, W2K, Win98,
98SE, & ME. Just go to the following site:
http://www.litepc.com/
I've been using 2000lite and 98lite, for some time now and I have no problems!

While it certainly does "disable" Internet Explorer to disallow use of mshtml.dll
it does also cripple Microsoft Outlook 2003.
Is there another DLL that can be permission-denied to detet IE use but still allow
outlook to funciton?

DISABLING INTERNET EXPLORER in WINDOWS XP
To disable Internet Explorer in WINDOWS XP modifications must be made to the REGISTRY
EDITOR. Incorrectly modifying the Registry Editor can cause serious problems so
the following list of instructions must be followed exactly. Failure to do so may
require that the XP Operating System be re-installed.
1. Click START
2. Click RUN
3. Type REGEDIT
4. Expand the registry by clicking the + symbol to the left of the following folders
in the registry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Software
Microsoft
Internet Explorer
5. Right click INTERNET EXPLORER
6. Left click PERMISSIONS
7. Under the Security Tab, HIGHLIGHT each individual user in the top window
8. Click the DENY check box in the bottom window for each user
9. Click APPLY when all users have been denied access
10. Click OK
11. Reboot the machine
12. Verify that all Internet Explorer icons are disabled
Failure to follow the above instructions EXACTLY may require that the XP Operating
System be re-installed. Do not change any other settings in the Registry Editor.
Modify the Registry Editor at your own risk!
