I have a question about Dealing
with Windows's Advanced Power Management (APM):
I have a problem with my Advanced Power Management. It is freezing my pc. From what
I can see, something is trying to write to illegal addresses on my hardrive which
causes my pc to freeze. I managed to get someone to replace the Advanced power management
for the standard power management.
I have reinstalled and once again the problem has reoccured. Can someone make any
suggestions to what is going or can tell me how to replace the advanced power management
for the standard power management.
I would be grateful for any help on this.

If you reinstalled AFTER the problem was fixed, you just recreated the problem that
was fixed... (if I understand what you are saying) Confused? Well.. When the
problem was fixed, most likely the HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) was downgraded
to a standard PC HAL. If you reinstalled the OP system you just reinstalled the
previous HAL all over again so now the HAL will need to be downgraded again. In
the future if reinstalling, you will have to hit the F5 key immediately when starting
the installation before it asks if any third party/SCSI drivers need to be installed.
The "Standard PC" HAL should be chosen from a list you will see. (you will have
to scroll up or down to see all the choices) Depending on the age of your computer
you will need a BIOS update and is probably the reason for the problem anyway. Most
computers older than a year or so need BIOS updates to handle XP correctly (and if
it is to old, it won't handle ACPI correctly anyway) so you can go to the motherboard
manufacturers website to check it out. If it is a Dell, HP etc, go to their website
to check. If it is a computer like Dell, HP etc and it didn't come with XP, they
won't support it. If you need the steps to revert back to standard, post back..
