Are you running NTFS or FAT32... if FAT32, expect it to be slower... let me say expect
it not not be as quick as a new os should...
But the part about "disk drives all need checking" that is someething you definitely
need to get to the bottom of.... possibly a corrupted sector on the HD.... Have
you defragged the drive yet?
