Spooler problem
Tuesday, August 6, 2002 at 2:54 am Posted by Ric
(6 messages posted)
I recently added a Kodak Picture Maker Printer (lexmark) to my laptop, running Windows
Xp Home Edtion. I had been having problems on my Desktop PC using the printer using
the USB conection so I thought it would be better on the Laptop using XP.
This proved to be the case until I repeatedly received a new hareware dialog box
for a printer. This would not go away and I finally thought I would uninstall the
printer using the unistall software from Kodak. The unistall worked well and then
I tried to reinstall the software after a reboot. This is where my problems begun.
There is a dialog box appearing : spooler is not started would you like to start
it now?...
... I select yes and then nothing happens. When I look in the Printer folder (control
panel) There are no printers intalled, not even the microsoft fax option.
Another problem is that i cannot find the XP disc.
Could someone help me to resolve these issues.
Would it be hard to fix if I could find the XP disc?
Thank you in advance,
Richard

Give this a try... be sure the printer is discon from the laptop. unistall printer
and software completely. then go to CONTROL PANEL, ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS, and scroll
down to PRINT SPOOLER, change startup type to AUTOMATIC. Reboot machine, connect
printer, should automatically be detected. If you need to, check LEXMARK site for
latest XP drivers... if there are more recent drivers available, download and install.
Let us know if it resolved issue.
As far as the fax option, you will need the XP disk to reinstall the fax option,
unless you have a copy of xp on your HD... good thing to do with any os... this
way if you do lose the cd... pull from HD...

Tried like you said but a very ominous dialog box appears: Could not start the the
service on local computer
Error 1075: The dependancy service does not exist or has been marked for deletion.
I think from looking around that there is an issue with the RPC Remote Procedure
Call, if that make sense?
I remember that this was asked for once when I tried to reinstall- this would maybe
explain why the fax system is offline as it seems dependent on the RPC.
don't have the printer here at work but will retry later.
Thanks
Richard

This problem occurs when the LexECL service disables itself in services. You can
find this in Administrative tools, Services. Look for this service and set it to
automatic. When you have this set you should restart the print spooler which you
will find in the same window. Once you have both services started this should allow
you to continue with your install and get the printing started. Hope this helps

I'm having the same problem with XP Home Edition.
I cannot find any LEXecl service and someone also mentions MMC - not sure what that
is either. Any help would be appreciated.

The problem is that the Lexmark driver's service sets the standard Windows NT
Spooler service to be dependant upon it. This way, whenever NT starts Spooler, it
first must start up the Lexmark stuff (service dependancies are used to make sure
any other service a service needs is running in time); when the Lexmark stuff is
gone, Spooler refuses to start itself.
Removing the dependancy fixes the Spooler problem; I had to reinstall my other
printer drivers before I could use them again, though.
WARNING: I've used this only to let Spooler restart and, hence, to be
able to print at all again; if you later reinstall the Lexmark drivers, I'd guess
that they'll work, but I haven't tried.
OTHER WARNING: I've used this under NT 4 only; if you're using a later
version, your mileage may vary (the XP machine of the friend with the Lexmark drivers
does seem to have the right bits in the right places, though).
- Short Version:
- delete [
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Spooler\DependOnGroup]
and [HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Spooler\DependOnService].
- Longer Version:
-
- Run regedit: from the Start Menu, select the Run option and supply the
name regedit (and click OK).
- (Using the tree view on the left) Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Spooler.
- If you click on the 'Spooler' folder label (or on the small folder icon
to the left of it) in the tree, the right hand display will show the information
stored for the Spooler service.
- There should be keys with names
DependOnGroup and DependOnService.
Delete them: right click on the names and select the Delete option (and confirm that
you do want to delete the key).
Restart your machine and Spooler should be able to start again.
Good luck!

How to remove LexBCE server from the services.msc?
Wednesday, September 17, 2003 at 11:52 pm Posted by Mike Stepansky
(3 messages posted)
After I un-installed the Lexmark driver and delete its driver or "Server Properties"
in Control Panel->Printer icons, no more printer icons (clean) ......
AND after I disconnect the Windows PrintSpooler's "dependencies" to the LexBCE Server,
I was able to restart Printer Spooler by typing MSDOS (winXP here) "net stop spooler"
and then "net start spooler"....
Or, (recommended) go to Start->Run 'services.msc' to scroll down the list "PrinterSpooler",
highlight it, Properties, disconnect its dependecies tree to a LexBCE Server; then
click "Stop" and click "Start" to restart PrintSpooler. I began HP installation...works
great.
*Questions: what should I do with this obsolete LexBCE server that is still in
the list? Delete it?
I am using HP printer now (works fine). No longer using Lexmark.
Will deleting this 'LexBCE' screw up my HP settings?
Pls reply here and offline email (as I dont come here too often). Mike

I just wanted to take the time to say, thanks a ton for posting this. I had uninstalled
a Lexmark printer over a year ago, but the Lexmark spooling service kept on running
and I could not shut it off. I recently deleted several registry keys to keep its
spooling programs from taking up my system resources, but then my current printer
stopped working!
Thanks to you, my printer now works again. I guess that when I made my first run
through the registry, I missed these two keys. I'm gonna warn my friends against
using Lexmark, again, thanks a ton.

Geoff,
YOU ARE MY HERO! I have been working for 2 days to rid my wife's computer of the
dreaded Lexmark Print Service Dependency, your tip did the trick! Thanks for sharing
your knowledge with the Internet Community at large. I certainly appreciate it!
Now if I can just get rid of the LexBce Service I disabled, I will sleep better,
knowing it will not creep back in. I tried INSTSRV, but I already deleted the actual
EXE and DLLS, so it can not resolve the path. Anyway, again my personal thanks!

Hello guys,
I have been having the same problem with the printer spooler (on WinXP Home, lexmark
all-in-one printer).
So, I tried the solution Mr.Geoff Crossland suggested, I removed the dependencies
by regedit. I was able to start the spooler after I did that, but now I have another
problem: the printer will only print once (processes only ONE job) and then it stops.
If click on the little printer icon that comes up in the taskbar (where the running
programs are, next to the clock) I can see the job that was just processed, but under
"status" I see something like "deleting job"; however, if I try to print again, nothing
happens.
I must restart the computer to be able to print again. This has become quite annoying
and inconvenient.
If anyone has come across this problem and knows of a solution, please let me know.
Your help is very much appreciated.

I checked out your suggestion on the regedit and the spooler shows the "Dependonservice"
but it does not show the "Dependongroup". I have an Epson RX580 Photo All in One
printer and assume that your suggestion will work for all printers even though your
reply was for a Lexmark. Please advise. Thanks

re: How to remove LexBCE server from the services.msc?

Removing this service will not interfere with HP printer
settings/drivers/services.
To remove:
First determine whether the service is installed:
- Click Start > Run (or alternatively hold windows
key + R) > Type: CMD > Press Enter/Return (or click OK)
- Type: SC Query LexBceS
If you are returned with the error message:
"The specified service does not exist as an installed service"
Then either double check you spelt "LexBceS" correctly, or the service
is
not installed. At which point you do not need to go any further.
To delete:
- Go back to command prompt (repeat step 1 above
if you've already closed the window)
- Type: SC Delete LexBceS
That's it. Restart your computer for changes to take effect.
GL :)
