Question about how to delete items that auto start

I have identified some of the programs that start up unnesseccerily but do not know how to cancel them from starting up. I downloaded Power toys for XP but it didn't have an option in the program to modify startup programs and these prgrams that I wish to fix do not appear on the startup menu. Any ideas?

start button---> run ---> (type) msconfig click the start up tab and deselect the programs that you dont want to start up then exit and reboot... when you restart youll get a message saying changes were made... select the " dont show this again" and that should do it....

What if it doesn't show up in the startup tab or in the registry?
