Question about 'Use the Third Mouse Button'

I have a question about using a logitech three button mouse on a computer running XP professional. Can I change something to make xp recognize the third button as a double click?.

I don't know about the 3rd button, but in folder options you can set up first button to do that. I have not double clicked for years now, except in outlook you still need to double click to open email if preview pane disabled.

Yes......the option will be in 'Mouse Properties' under the 'Buttons' tab. You should be able to get to this in Control Panel. If it's an older mouse, get the latest drivers from Logitech.

Logitech's site indicates MouseWare does not support serial pointing devices under Windows XP. I have an ANCIENT cordless 3-button mouse that I hate to give up. XP doesn't recognize the third button and when I press the middle button (double-click habit), I get the scroll function. If you've found a fix, please share!!!

I just got XP Pro and have the same problem. Did you ever find a fix to program the middle button as a double click? Thanks, Larry

Haven't found an answer yet... I ended up using a different mouse (still old, however) and downloaded an updated driver from Logitech. I get mouse errors almost everyday and have to set up the buttons when the error occurs. My favorite cordless 3-button mouse is sitting in the corner of my desk waiting to be brought into the 21st century. Good luck!

Your problems are over. I am (was) in the same boat and went looking. Go to this site: http://www.digconsys.com/mouse.html and download the "Middle Mouse Button" software. It works just great. It's worth far more than the ten bucks than I will send them to register it.

Thanks for your problem solving. I also found a solution, unfortunately before I read your message. I stumbled onto a GE 3 button optical mouse, model HO97986, which includes software that allows programming the middle button for many functions, one of which is double click. The instruction manual lists the web site www.jascoproducts.com. I assume they make the mouse for GE. This mouse was $13 at Big Lots.

I checked the GE mouse and the model you supplied shows the middle "button" is a scroll wheel. Of course, you can configure it to respond as a middle button. I'm too set in my ways. You see, I also can't stand a scroll wheel. I want three actual buttons. I have also used MouseImp (with Win98) that allows you to click and hold the right button, then move the mouse up or down to scroll. MouseImp and MouseImp Pro do not work with XP. I have found a program that does.

You're right, of course, Bud. I agree about hating a scroll wheel, but I was so happy to be able to set the middle (scroll) button to double click that I bought the GE mouse anyway. I took your advice and downloaded the middle button software so I can have 3 real buttons without the annoying scroll wheel. Larry

Larry, the program that I refer to that permits you to scroll by holding down your right mouse button can be found at: www.magicutils.com It's called MouseStar 3.50 and it will work within Windows Xp, for the most part. It will not work in Internet Explorer, but their tech people are working on it. The download runs out after a few days, and I just purchased it on their secure site for $14.95. It's worth every cent, even at the moment. Like I said, MouseImp (pro) will NOT work with xp, but works just fine in Win98.
