Question about 'Getting Network Neighborhood to recognize newly attached computers'

I have a question about Getting Network Neighborhood to recognize newly attached computers:

I'm trying to connect a desktop directly to a laptop. They're both running Windows XP but they say that the cable's unplugged. I changed the cable thinking it may have been bad, but it still doesn't work. I have run through the networking wizard a couple of times and have tried uninstalling the original network setups (the desktop used to run Windows Me, but since we upgraded to XP home, the network connection doesn't work). Can anybody please help with this? I appreciate any help that anyone can give on this. thank you

Are you using a "Cross-over" cable. A direct connection will not work with a "Patch" cable.

If you did'nt try it yet, try installing NETBIOS protocol on both computers. You'll find it in the orginal disk under tools I think

Yeah I'm using a crossover cable. Actually, I've gone through three different crossover cables.

hmmm, haven't tried that yet. I was thinking it might just be the Lan port on the desktop went bad somehow but I'll definitely try this first.

I have the same problem, except its between two desktop machines ( an AMD Athlon 1.8 and a 200mhz pentium1, (dont laugh) both running xp) Tried 3-4 different xover cables, and 1/2dozen network cards thinking they must be damaged or incompatible... I have no idea why this happens because i can link my computer to my mates hub, and directly using xover... just between my two computers...
