dwwin.exe

Everytime I shutoff or restart Windows Xp, I get an error message about a file called
dwwin.exe. I searched for it and I have that file in my Windows\System32 directory,
and I also have DWWIN.EXE-30875ADC.pf in my Windows\preftech directory. Is there
any way I can stop getting these error messages? Thanks in advance.

Did you use Windows update recently? This file seems to be a part or result of an
update. You could use system restore to go back before the time of the update or
go to Control Panel Add/Remove programs and remove the update there. Good Luck.

Yes, I use Windows Update frequently. This has been happening for a while, so I
wouldn't want to go to a system restore. And on te add/remove window, I have a lot
of "Windows XP Hotfix" icons. Any idea which one it might be? They all have Q######"
where each # is a different number (duh!).

Don't have enough info. to know what is causing the error message. But I don't think
your dwwin.exe is a result of a MS update. The file is for Microsoft's application
error reporting function.

Hey everyone...I just wanted to let you know that I'm currently experiencing the
same problem with the dwwin.exe. True it is a error reporting file that Microsoft
uses. I've gotten the SP-1 and all updates up to today so I know I'm current, however
I still recieve the error message when I restart/shutdown my computer. I was wondering
if deleting it would fix the problem but I dont want to do that till I know for sure.
Let me know if you come across a solution. Thanks!

I too get this error, however it is only when I try to open Internet Explorer. I
cannot even open the application at this point. Thankfully I keep multiple browsers
installed. I have not used the windows update recently. I do not know why this
has started happening.

We had the same problem. We ran Norton Win Doctor and then restarted. Cleared it up
no probs. I think it just has to do with a faulty registry mod from when you plug
into any network.

This file belongs to Dr. Watson - a program that is part of windows that monitors
application crashes. Try typing
'sfc /scannow'
from the Start->run box and hitting enter. You may need operating system disk but
it should fix your error!

Had this problem, here is what I did:
Open regedit, go to:
HKLM_SOFTWARE_MICROSOFT_CURRENT VERSION_RUN
If you have a logitech input device, or a Gravis gamepad input device, you need to
modify the value of the registry key so that the application starts up in *belownormal*
processor priority.
Example:
start /belownormal c:\windows\system32\Grxp4exe.exe /init
"start /belownormal" is the addition you will make to the beginning of the line...
Hope this helps,
-Norm

Nice one, that fixed mine. Although only Grxp4exe.exe /init appeared in my registry.
I tried just adding "start /belownormal" but I needed to reconstruct the whole thing
so it appeared as below.

Thank you so much for this tip; worked like a charm.
Now that I think back, the problem started when I installed a Logitech Optical Wireless
mouse.
Thanks ,

Wow. Lots of stuff loading from your run key. Lets see here...
First step: Export this key to a .reg file (backup, just incase you need to restore
it!)
Set the following to start in /belownormal priority:
Delltouch
QD Fast&Safe
Adaptec DirectCD
QuickTime Task
Monitr32
tkbelle.exe
mptbox
pdf factory
Logout, Login, Logout. Do this a few times to be sure. If the problem went away,
one at a time set them back to normal... (Until you find the culprit.)
If it didn't go away, restore your backup.reg file and try some of the other values...
My guess is that it is Delltouch. (This is the little process that runs for the hotkey
commands on the dell keyboard...)

I should have mentioned that I only get this error occasionally. I have not been
able to notice a pattern in terms of software use.
However, I never, ever use the Dell hotkeys. Can't say why :)

I have been following this because I have the same problem. I tried inserting
the "start /belownormal " before the command for my Logitech Trackman rollerball.
It seemed to help, but not completely fix the problem. Then next time I ran
Windoctor, Windoctor found it and called it an invalid registry key. I lost my nerve
at that point and went back and deleted the "start /belownormal " from the value.
The problem is still there, but something has now eliminated the mouse driver from
my RUN key. My pointer works, so I guess I didn't really need that driver anyway.
I could re-install the trackball to get it back if I wanted to, so I'll get by.
However, I still have my DWWIN.EXE problem.
Can you tell me what "start /belownormal " is doing?
Am I correct in my interpretation that "start /belownormal " was supposed to
be the first thing in the value field followed by whatever else was there?

"start" is a command line tool used to invoke the windows shell (or windows exe's)
from a command prompt. By selecting "/belownormal" you tell it to start the following
command in a belownormal priority state (as opposed to the default, "normal".) (Their
are 6 different priority states possible: low, belownormal, normal, abovenormal,
high, & realtime.)
As the "start" command is command line driven, you get the best results adhering
to DOS 8.3 filenames... (e.g. "mydocu~1" instead of "My Documents".) In WinXP you
can see the 8.3 filenames by doing a "dir /x".)
Example from RUN key in registry:
Original Value: wdpdf.exe /config
New Value: start /belownormal c:\progra~1\westing\wdpdf.exe /config
Here is a good KBA on "start":
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/TechNet/prodtechnol/winxppro/proddocs/start.asp
As to "why" this seems to help this problem, who knows! I know if you check "Admin
Tools-->Event Viewer-->System" and look at the error it isn't very helpful... But
when the problem key's priority is lowered, the message stops and no errors are added
to the log. I had no ill effects, so I said "Yes!".
Oh yeah, I believe this is a bug introduced with WinXP SP1 as well... I have not
heard of this being a problem pre-SP1.

Thank you very much for your thorough and thoughtful response. After the last
Windows update, I haven't seen the problem, so I am now crossing my fingers. If
that doesn't work, I will go back and edit the registry again using 8.3 file names.
It took me a long time to respond because I was where I could not retrieve my
email for a couple of weeks.

This problem began for me upon upgrading from NAV 2000 to 2003. Interestingly enough,
I have a gravis gamepad, so I tried the registry fix discussed in this thread. It
worked. I don't know why. I am 100% certain the problem originated with the upgrade
to NAV 2003...not with the gamepad which was installed 6 mos. prior. What is NAV
doing, and how does changing the key for my gamepad fix the problem?! I'm baffled.

Norm,
I also was having a Dwwin.exe error upon shutting down Windows XP which only started
occuring immediately after installing for the first time my Gravis Xterminator Digital
Gamepad with the latest driver updates from the Gravis Website. I went in and updated
the Windows HKLM Registry as you suggested:
From: Grxp4exe.exe /init
To: Start /belownormal c:\windows\system32\Grxp4exe.exe /init
and found that this did indeed make the error go away upon shutdown, however, I then
could not run the Calibration - Testing diagnostics or Gravis presets anymore for
the Gravis gamepad after going into Control Panel / Game Controllers / Properties.
I decided that I needed the calibration and setup more than the slight inconvenience
of the dwwin.exe error and changed the Registry back to the original settings.
Do you know how I can get both of these items corrected at the same time - Fix the
Dwwin.exe error and have the luxury of calibration of the Gravis gamepad?
Thanks!

Sorry, mine did not have any ill-effects. Have you tried just using the Gravis Controll
panel that the driver installs in your programs group, rather than using the control
panel? You probably already have, but that is all I can think of...
Another thing you could do is remove that application from windows startup, and create
a batch file that starts that service when you actually want to use your controller/setup
utility...
For example...
@echo off
start /belownormal c:\windows\system32\Grxp4exe.exe /init
c:\program files\Gravis\Config.exe
cls
Just a thought... If you did this you would only see the error after using the gamepad...

I have recently started seeing this error also at logoff and shutdown. I am not
sure, but I also think this is somehow related to NAV. I am using NAV Corporate
7.6 unmanaged software on my WinXPP machines.
I have also noticed that the NAV yellow mouse is no longer in the system tray, but
yet I can see the processes running in the task manager.
When I bring up the NAV software and try to check the RTP box I get an error telling
me NAV services could not be loaded...
Anyone know if these are all related under some single mystical problem?
Thanks!

The problem has to be something else that is common and throught this thread the
only common thing I have seen is that NAV is also on the system.

I've been having similar problems for a while now. I have an new XP machine. It uses
Dragon Naturally Speaking v6.1, Read and Write 6 Gold, as well as Norton SystemWorks.
I've been finding that Dragon creates iexplore.exe.local and winword.exe.local files,
and these files lock the PC, 100%CPU when the relevant software is started (IE /
Word).
The Read&Write as also been locking the PC suddenly for no apparent reason. Today
I noticed drwwin in Task Manager when a 100%CPU lockup started. So I ended up here,
in the hope that I might find an answer.
Is there any way of getting rid of dwwin or disabling it or something? I've already
removed DrWatson from AE debug, but dwwin still takes over regularly.
I have a Kensington mouse & no other pointing devices.
This seems to be an on going problem for many people. Would love some answers.

re: dwwin.exe not simply belownormal
Friday, June 6, 2003 at 12:41 pm Posted by Godfried Hombergen
(8 messages posted)
Adding "start /belownormal" in the registry worked: the errormessage about dwwin32.exe
no longer occurred at shutting down. But.... the problem seems to be more complicated:
1. Norton Utilities' Windoctor detects this addition as an error. It says that the
key HKLM\Software....\Run refers to a registryvalue "Gravis Xperience Driver Support"
that points to "start /belownormal C:\Windows....\Grxp4exe.exe /init" an invalid
startup command.
2. The driver Grxp4exe.exe disappered from the taskmanager.
So in fact deleting an error created a new error.
Before the dwwin32-promblem came up, I happened to update WinXP with SP1 (and the
subsequent updates from MicroSoft) as well as to install the Gravis Blackhawk Digital
Joystick software. Thus it is not possible to relate the dwwin32-problem to the one
or the other. As both (and logitech mouses) are often mentioned in the treatment
of this problem in this forum it appears that there is a relationship.
At the same time that I met the dwwin32-problem on my PC I experienced another problem:
long time-outs as they seem to be while activating programs and processes. F.i. starting
the file explorer it takes 10-20 seconds or so before it comes up. To speed it up
I applicate an artificial handling: Ctrl-Alt-Del to ask for the taskmanager. As soon
as the programwindow of the tm opens I see "not reacting" changing in "Activated"
on the the File Explorer-line. After this the file-explorer windows opens at once...
What does it mean? How can I get rid of this annoying problem of slowness?

I too had this problem. My cause seemed to be an entry in the Run key called 'Save'
or 'SaveNow'. It was installed automatically sometime back while I was online shopping,
I guess. It was installed under Program Files/Save by default. Removing it removed
the problem after a reboot.

Make no mistake about it people, the problem is caused by Norton's Internet Security
2003/Norton's Antivirus 2003. I have a Gravis gamepad and used it everyday along
with a saitek gamepad without any problems. The time came for me to do a fresh install
of XP on July 1st 2003(hard drive was just too full-lol). I did the install on a
freshly formatted NTFS hard drive. I went to windows update and downloaded everything
except for two optional programs(Net.Framework and Windows Journal Viewer). Everything
worked flawlessly up to the point of installing Norton's Internet Security 2003 which
comes packaged with Norton's Antivirus 2003. Right after the install,I began to get
the dwwin.exe problem at restart or shutdown. What's crazy is that I ran NIS2003
and NAV2003 before the fresh install along with the Gravis controller without any
problems just a few days ago. The problem doesn't isn't just the antivirus software,it's
also windows update. I'd rather keep my update to stay safe from attacks more so
than keeping Norton software. Norm's fix does work, but it causes conflicts in other
areas for some people(controller calibration not working,Norton detecting it as an
error, and etc.). It's not the Gravis controller in itself either, because I used everything
together before. Grxp4exe.exe has always started up with the system without any problems
until Norton's software or windows updates. Go figure.

I have also verified this using a freshly formatted drive. I installed the Gravis
pad first and it performed flawlessly...with no errors at shutdown. A few days later,
I installed NAV 2k3, and the error message returned at the very first shutdown. Symantec
refuses to acknowledge the problem. I have e-mailed them on several occassions. Not
once have they given me a response.
The registry fix in this thread does the job, but I have found that the analog sticks
do not have their full range of sensitivity...so I have found myself removing the
registry hack, and rebooting just to play a game...only to replace the hack when
I'm finished. It is a hassle, but I just hate that damned error. Perhaps if more
folks contact symantec about the issue, we will be heard.

Don't jump to conclusions, guys. dwwin is a totally legit xp file, Dr. Watson to
be exact.
I also have this problem, but I don't use gravis/logitech stuff and I don't have

I DO, however, have some recent XP patches installed. I think MS made another mistake
and released some half-baked patches. If you look on another thread, it says that
uninstalling XP Q817606 and XP KB823559 will fix the problem.

"Start.exe" is not available on newer versions of Windows (where Start remains a
valid shell command, but it is implemented directly in the command processor, rather
than as a separate file).
your sujjestion to add "start /belownormal" to the begining of the entries in the
run section of the registry disables those lines. Why did you suggest something
you never tried yourself?

I had the same problem, no logitech mouse, no gamepad, etc etc. only norton (symantic)
antivirus corporate edition. I have had this problem after an update from windows.
So I rebooted the norton, still came back. I gave up on it for awhile just letting
it annoy me for awhile. I tried deleting some of the patches listed also in this
forum; that didn't work. Finally this one keystroke on the iamapp which value is
:c:\progra~1\SYMANT~1\SYMANT~2\IAMAPP.EXE Is the only thing that I changed to the
start /belownormal worked. Thanks again, if anyone else is paying attention and
you are running norton with your system try this first!!

To make this quick:
Cause: IE to freeze slow.. application would not start.
Event: Receive dwwin.exe after doing windows update on recent "Error reporting..."
Tries and failed:
disabling dwwin.exe in msconfig and deleting all from registry.
Final solution: (please read carefully)
After all failed.. I decide to delete all the dwwin.exe (176 KB). After delete your
windows will go crazy. It will not open any aplpication and will give you error message.
Why?: Its because dwwin.exe was program to be laod all the time and windows cannot
located it.
You should still be able to click on the START menu and do a restart.
Before windows startup hit "F8" to bring up a menu. Choose the option: "restore windows
to last best known configuration."
And you should be back to normal.. please read carefully before you try. Write down
all the steps.
System: Windows XP Pro
Note: the dwwin.exe (176KB) should disappear from your system.
Good luck.

I had this problem, not from an optical mouse, I am really not sure why. Either
way, when I would open up IE that is when the mayhem would begin. I read through
this forum, tried some tactics. I deleted the dwwin.exe and it's associated files
(other dwwin files) including the reg. Then windows was going crazy. I then uninstalled
the two windows update files from remove programs like it stated earlier in this
thread (XP Q817606 and XP KB823559 are the files mentioned to uninstall). Then I
was back to square one, only without a message box popping up. So I did a ctrl alt
del, and saw a file that kept appearing and disappearing, each time it would take
out the other programs with it (except the ctrl alt del box) and the taskbar would
appear and disappear with it. The file was called msnijb I then found it, deleted
it and it's registry file and now it works fine. I hope that helps.

Hmmm....just finished reading all the replies to dwwin.exe. I just started getting
this problem after upgrading from Norton NIS 2003 to NIS 2004. I do not have any
Gravis hardware devices. A circumvention that eliminated the dwwin popup at shutdown
for me is go to :
control panel/system/advanced/error reporting/chose programs/
and add "ccapp.exe" to list of programs exempted from error reporting. ccapp is the
main Norton AV 2004 program.

no problem! This is the proper fix. My hat off to ya! Dano

I have been having the dwwin error on shut-down as well. I have a gravis gamepad
with gravis control panel 4.5 and believe the problem to be related to this.
I tried the start /belownormal change in my registry. That got rid of the error but
force feedback no longer worked on my controller. I changed the registry back to
the way it was - force feedback worked again but of course the error returned.
I think Windows Messenger is adding to the problem - I sometimes get errors saying
it must shutdown when using gravis control pad - even though I never have it open.
I removed Windows Messenger - I don't use it anyway, so far this seems to have solved
all my problems: Feedback works and no dwwin error.
I also read that upgrading Messenger to 5.0 may solve this as well.
IF YOU DO DELETE MESSENGER AND USE OUTLOOK FOR YOUR EMAIL - BACK UP YOUR CONTACTS,
IT MAY DELETE THEM WHEN YOU DELETE MESSENGER!
Time will tell if this solution works, but I hope this helps.

Oh lord.... I was doing some updates last night, and it failed. So I rebooted and
tried it again. It was .NET enviroment 1.1 and some other thing I forgot. Anyways
everytime I start windows now, all I get is dwwin stuck in the damn taskmanager not
letting any other program or window open. I tried the methods mentioned above. I
cant do a system restore or uninstall the update packages because I did a Windows
XP repair (booting the CD then repairing). When I disable dwwin, dwtsn32.exe starts
it again. If I disable dwtsn32.exe it crashed explorer.exe and then I have to run
explorer.exe from task manager again(sometimes explorer starts on its own). I do
have a logitech mouse and Zonealarm installed. I tried adding those to the expemtion
list for error reporting it didnt work. I tried the start /belownormal config in
the registry, same thing. I disabled error reporting and drwtsn32.exe went nutts
crashing and restarting explorer.exe over and over and over.... I wish i can back
up 40gb of stuff so I can do a clean install but as many of the people here, this
is out of the question >_< ...
Any more ideas?

Hi, Thanks to google I found this forum.
I am having a lot of problems with my pc lately
For me I think it happened when I updated my firewall from zonealarm to zonealarmpro.
I have uninstalled it now.
I am Marlene by the way and I am from The Netherlands.
A lot of times the mouse stopped working. so I have to reboot.
One of the errors I had was the dwwin.exe one.
I read the replies, and have changed the key in the register. never done that before
(and stupid me did not make a back up, did not know how, but I found an item on
this site how to do that next time.) but i have added those 2 words.
well here I can show you
start /belownormal C:\Program Files\Common Files\Logitech\QCDriver2\LVCOMS.EXE
I do not have a long list in that particular register.
I have rebooted and hope i did the right thing?
Other error messages I had: application error in iexplore.exe had to do with flash.ocx.
Also something that worries me more, but I will search this site to see what to do
about that, is in my logs
eventsystem 4609 Hresults 8007043C
I will see first how the pc will react now I,ve changed the key.
Hope I did not do anything stupid?
thanks in advance Marlene

I didn't have either of those KB/QFE's installed on my XP Home SP2 system but started
getting the error after installing Intuit's "It's Deductible" v7.0. Just as I ok'd
the installation's "reboot now to use me?" msgbox, WinPatrol came up and and warned
me of the new application. The in-process-reboot prevented me from telling WinPatrol
it was ok, so that MAY have been a factor. The first symptom I had was that attempts
to print forms from "It's Deductible" just opened empty Adobe Reader 6.0.1 windows.
I concluded that some linkage (registry) had failed to persist, perhaps due to WinPatrol.
After that, and after subsequent reboots, I.E. (v6.0.2800etc) started acting up.
Failed to open new windows from ALT-N or right-click on link, and every minute or
so popped up EventId 26 ("dwwin.exe - Application Error : The application failed
to initialize properly (0xc0000142).").
Uninstalling Adobe Reader seems to have fixed it.

Two days ago another message about dwwin.exe DLL initializing failed, then in Norton

I ran CHKDSK in DOS and the message came up 'Chkdsk cannot run because the volume

I have also been having the dwwin error on shut-down, and I solved it per these steps
(thanks to all the ideas I spotted in these threads):
1) I turned off error reporting (control panel/system/advanced) - be sure to even
disable "notify me when critical errors occur".
2) I initiated a restart of the computer, and wrote down the names of the programs
that were causing errors that resulted in Windows trying to initialize dwwin.exe
but couldn't be because Windows was "shutting down"! In my case the programs were
AlarmApp.exe (a Palm Desktop program) and msmsgs.exe (the Windows Messenger program).
3) I configured Windows Messenger (don't delete it!) so it does not automatically
start on start-up. (I don't use it anyway.)
4) I added AlarmApp.exe to the programs to exempt on error reporting (control panel/system/advanced).
5) I re-enabled error reporting and then restarted the computer: NO MORE PROBLEM!

Dwwin.exe is an error reporting application named "Dr. Watson".
To stop getting those annoying error messages you can disable this service.
Right click on "My Computer" and hit "Properties".
Then hit the "Advanced" tab, then "error reporting" at the bottom of the page.
Click "disable this service" and keep "but report critical errors" unchecked.
Now, go to Start/Run and put in "services.msc".
You will see a list of the services that are available.
Go down the list to "error reporting", right click on it and hit "Properties". Then
move the drop down-menu at "Start-up type" to "Disabled".
That's it. It should fix it all.

Hi all. I too had this dwwin.exe error message start to pop up at shutdown with WinXP
Home Ed SP-2. It started right after installing a Gravis Gamepad Pro, and its XPerience
ver 4.5 software. I also have Norton System Works 2003 installed.
I have spent nearly 18 man-hours on this issue and I could have given up or chosen
an easy out, but I'm the type person who likes a challenge AND demands to know EXACTLY
what is causing a problem, so here's my results and opinions in the hope others can
isolate their issues more quickly.
I read this thread with great interest and tried nearly everything someone suggested
with varying degrees of success. Here's what I recommend:
1. Do NOT turn off error reporting. You're only hiding the problem. That's like taping
over your low fuel warning light and pretending it doesn't exist.
2. As someone earlier correctly pointed out, using "start /belownormal" in the registry
before a Run command will simply disable that Run command, so of course the problem
will appear to go away. But that will also keep the subject driver from loading at
all (in my case the Gravis Grxp4exe.exe device driver), and you will not have use
of its functions. The Gamepad still functions as a joystick from MS Windows drivers,
but that's not why you installed the software in the first place. In my case, I wanted
to use the Gamepad velcroed to my desk as a mini-keypad with all the buttons mapped
to keys. You can't do that without the XPerience software driver loaded and functional.
Sorry Norm, but your method is no different than simply unchecking the box in msconfig
and rebooting.
3. The dwwin.exe error message appears because Dr. Watson detected an error, tried
to load so it could report the error, and failed to initialize because Windows was
being shut down. The key statement here is that "Dr. Watson detected an error". That's
a good thing. It's your low fuel warning light. The challenge then becomes how to
identify and correct the error in a logical, timely manner.
4. Software conflicts arise out of at least two applications having a problem with
each other. How do you identify which two? In my case, it was easy to identify one
since the problem started immediately after I installed the Gravis XPerience ver
4.5 software. I could (and did) verify that this was the problem by uninstalling
it and the problem went away. But that didn't get me my mini-keyboard working.
5. After trying many suggestions in this thread and not getting anywhere, I decided
to be logical about this and disabled ALL in the msconfig Startup Tab. Then I enabled
the Gravis driver entirely by itself, and it worked perfectly with no dwwin.exe message.
I think you can guess the rest....
6. I re-enabled one item at a time, starting with the ones I suspected to be the
culprits (Norton apps first, LOL), and rebooted each time. My conflict was not with
any Norton app - they all loaded without a hitch. My conflict was found on the 8th
or 9th app enabled, a memory management program I have called FreeMem Pro, ver 5.2.
I immediately disabled it, and the problem went away, re-enabled it, the problem
came back. Fortunately I had an earlier version of FreeMem Pro in my archives so
on a whim I uninstalled 5.2 and installed 5.0. Guess what? No conflict. The difference
in the two versions of this program is rather minimal, and I can easily accept that
in return for no more conflicts or error messages.
7. Having found one conflict, I re-enabled ALL 20 or so other Startup items, rebooted
and luckily that was the only problem. No more error messages and all my apps are
coexisting peacefully again.
Hope this helps others and good luck on your troubleshooting!

DLL Inialization failed...
Monday, June 27, 2005 at 7:45 pm Posted by James Seymour
(1 messages posted)
Well, I dunno. But I seem to have the privelege of having the worst case on this
board. For one thing, I have a RAID 1 Array, which makes me pretty paranoid from
the getgo.
This Dell computer hasn't worked from the first day I bought it. And I don't think
any Microsoft guru will help either. Unless I want him to help me rebuild my hard
drive.
I've already done that three times for different reasons, but there are so many problems
remaining that I only use my brand new Gen 3, 3.6 Gig computer to burn movies.
I have two other computers, but they have XP2 Pro, and this one has XP Home, plus
the RAID 1. And Systemworks 2003. Now you need to know that Ghost doesn't work
with RAID 1. At all. And I don't think that Speedisk does either. But Acronis'
True Image doesn't care about the RAID array, so I have a backup for my C partition
to rely on. And it's a good thing, too. People who believe the big companies and
don't partition their hard drives correctly, (Dell sent me 160Gig in one partition
only.) will really suffer if they rely on System Restore. Whatever I have blows
out System Restore all the time.
I don't have any virus. I do have the most current update of Systemworks 2003 virus
definitions, AdAware, Spybot, and Mailwasher as an email filter. I had Symantic
scan my system remotely, and I'm clean. Well, my computer is anyway...
I've also tried the "msconfig" technique, which was a neat thing to learn, but no
cure for me.
I haven't been able to figure out why I can't ask the good Doctor Watson what's wrong,
but it doesn't seem to work correctly anyway. I have seen instructions on how to
disable it. But that doesn't seem to be a good idea.
The DLL Initialization error seems to run in some kind of cycle. And the whole thing
may be as long as 8 reboots long. The events seem random and widely varied. Many
of them don't have any reference on Microsoft's site. Most often, Event Viewer doesn't
register anything, except a security error relating to a disused network connection.
I don't use it much, and so the cable is disconnected, but I don't care.
By the way, Dell/India told me to avoid downloading XP Updates, and to call MS so
that I could buy CDs with the changes. Nice, eh? Curiously, I don't have any trouble
at all with my other two computers. One of which is a 400 MHZ Dell I bought six
years ago. I started with NT4 on that one, and added on XP Pro sp2 as a splice.
Oh well, maybe somebody...message in a bottle...

Hi.
I have a very similiar problem like many other people reporting here, but mine seems
to be a bit different/harder. I'm unable to block drwin.exe from running - changing
the registrry setting/GUI options in Security Center and turning the apropriate service
DOES NOT change the situation- the message box:
"dwwin.exe - DLL Initialization Failed"
The application failed to initialize because the windows station is shuting down"
still pops out (NOT ALWAYS) at system restart (NOT SHUTDOWN). Could anyone have knowledge,
how can I turn off Dr. Watson, or even remove it without getting another anoying
pop-ups?
I'm suspecting another debugger I got (from MS VS NET) is taking of control, but
running explicitly Dr. Watson, that's why the system setting are not taken into account
while running it. Is there perhaps a solution to block drwin.exe simply from running
on a lower level? Would DEP help?

Hi,
Recently I have noticed that I kept getting this dwwin.dll warning message after
I either logoff or shutdown my computer.
After reading a thread posted by someone, the person mentioned that it was probably
a weather channel stream that was causing this problem.
I recently installed the new version of Yahoo Messenger with Voice and one of the
tabs is the weather report. I tried to signout and exit the Yahoo Messenger prior
to logging off or shutting down the computer and the dwwin.dll warning message did
not show up.
I do not recommend deleting the dwwin.exe as I believe this is part of the WinXP
OS.
What this means to me is that I have the following options:
1. Signout and exit Yahoo Messenger prior to logging off or shutting down the computer
2. Uninstall Yahoo Messenger
3. Ignore the warning.
Hope this helps.

therfore i think this is a new part of microsuX plan (visit:http://www.againsttcpa.com)
there you have it. when i download certain files this problem seems to crop up.

however, the best advice I can offer is to stop downloading things via P2P. From

LoL! I can't believe this thread is still alive. Anyway here goes.
dwwin.exe is DrWatson for Windows. DrWatson is an integral part of Windows and has
been for years. It reports errors and provides rudimentary diagnostics.
If you get the errormessage as described when you shut down windows it is because
an error occurs at shutdown. This is picked up by DrWatson (dwwwin) but because windows
is shutting down DrWatson fails to start, hence the errormessage.
I have this problem myself, and the questions to ask is: "have I made any changes
to my PC recently?". Well I have. I installed new graphics drivers, iPod software,
an update of Steam and CounterStrike Source. My job now is to track down which of
these changes cause the error on shutdown. One way could be to restore the system
to a previous known good configuration. Another way could be to uninstall or undo
recent changes one by one until the problem is solved. A third way could be to run
some repair software, for example, notably, Norton WinDoctor, to fix any registry
problems that may cause the error.
In other words, the dwwin error is just a symptom of a different underlying problem
and not the problem itself. Preventing yourself from sneezing will not cure your
cold ;)

Hi people, I fixed a similar problem on my XP.
First, let me tell you how it has begun. Just after
an update from InstallShield, the pc has started to complain on shutdown about the
"dwwin.exe" and it's DLL. So, I lighted up some candles and spent a whole night praying
some obscure incantations, but it didn't help a lot. Thanks to someone in this forum,
I knew that the problem did not come from dwwin (which is just a kind of listener
& notifier).
I launched msconfig and unchecked everything in the "startup" list. After rebooting,
no problem anymore when logging out. I then had to check back some services. Fortunately
(and because I checked the most suspect stuffs first), I quickly found who was responsible
of that... It was the "Dell Quickset" program (my xp is running on a Dell Inspiron
6000 laptop). I won't tell you what I did then, because they may be some young readers
here, but you can trust me when I say it won't be a danger anymore.
I still wonder why it suddently started to be aggressive, it usually was a reliable
program. I can't figure out what happened.
bye.

I fixed this problem after getting help from one of microsofts' newsgroups. I followed
the tip given and it works. I just have to exit Yahoo Messenger before I shut down
and then dwwn.exe doesn not show up. If i don't exit YM, it reappears.
So maybe you'll have to see what you must exit from, if you do not have YM.I started
by exiting from all running programmes.

I hate to bring this post back to life. But I'm recently having this problem the
same one many of the people in this thread have. I have a Dell Dimension E10.
I usually get this problem when shutting down the system.I've posted on the Dell
Forums. I've tried restoring the system and I've tried the sfc scan.
And disabling Dr. Watson can be dangerous if not done right. So I don't want to screw
up the system and than have to format the system and lose everything.
I don't know where find the Dell quickset or what to do.

First, I was greatly pleased to find this thread on this subject.
I started having this problem after renewing with Symantec (and upgrading from NIS
2005 to NIS 2006 at the same time).
I was most interested in the previous note with respect to Dell QuickSet. Although
prior to the upgrade to NIS 2006 I had not seen this specific problem - previous
to the NIS 2006 upgrade I had seen QuickSet use 100 percent of the CPU. Sometimes
I would simply have to terminate the process and restart the system.
Frankly I am afraid of REGEDIT. Specifically I am afraid I will inflict system damage
with REGEDIT. So, I used Mike Lins' Startup Control Panel freeware (www.mlin.net)
to remove QuickSet from the HKLM RUN list.
To date I have not noticed any change in the time to start up Windows XP Professional
on my Dell Inspirion 8600.
I am normally very reluctant about freeware, but, had saw a reference to his product
in the Microsoft Windows XP Inside Out Deluxe Edition (Microsoft Press).
Thought I would make note of Mike Lin's freeware in the oft chance there are others
out there like myself who are fearful of REGEDIT.
As of this date, I am current on all MS XP and MS Office updates.
So far so good. Will keep you posted.

On dwwin shutdown problems I have found one cause that may be of interest. I use
Intel wireless management, driver 9.0.4.13 for the 2200 b/g chipset. On startup I
got a popup from the MS wireless network item in the system tray to say my network
had limited connectivity while the Intel side was busy in its preamble negotiating
a connection. The MS message was a bit premature, and as soon as the wireless driver
sorted its connection it promptly disappeared. Now I thought I would disable the
noxious limited connectivity pop up from network connections properties for the wireless
connection. I discovered doing this is one cause of the dwwin shutdown unhandled
errors. Clues I got were event 26 Pop up info messages under system in the event
viewer relating to dwwin and drwtsn32.exe dll uninitialized - ie a pop up. I wracked
my brains what I could have done to prompt this then it twigged. Other clues were
the proplem disappearing if I disabled wireless. Looks like Microsoft's error handling
not handling its own errors... Of course there could be a app closing/sequence/timing
issues at play so you may or may not see the problem I guess.

Note: regarding the above, Intel Proset wireless management is active, not MS wireless
management. So all the more mystery as to why the premature Microsoft (MS) pop up
was happening the first place. Therein perhaps is the source of the logic error that
trips something on shutdown. What is interesting is that disabling the 'limited connection'
pop-up (giving the problem), then re-enabling it, not only has this cured the dwwin
problem, it also appears to have stopped the MS pop-up appearing while the Intel
proset/driver estalishes a wireless connection. By appears to have, I mean on two
start ups so far, previously the system tray pop-up appeared on every boot.

I have seen this problem recently and at the same time Adobe Reader 7.08 is having
problems shutting down. I expect DWWIN.EXE would normally be called in response to
any program which is having problems simply by the function it is trying to provide.
The source of the problem could therefor be a version or regestry installation issue
between Adobe & Microsoft. If you have Adobe v7 installed you could either try updating
it, or installing an older version to at least isolate the problem.

I have this problem and thought it was caused by Adobe acrobat too, as it's only
when I've opened that to view something that it happens. But it seems it's just windows
reacting to something in acrobat (or some other programme) not going to start messing
with my registry! But will keep on looking.

Well the thing that i have is totally different. i have been having the same problem
as same as you. The obly thing i figured out is that dwwin.exe stands for doctorwaston.
That is a virus ir a worm. the problm that i had it was that whenever i went to the
internet dwwin.exe pop-up came up and said error end now or a error message. The
thing that i done was that i went to "start, search, all files and folders, dwwin" Then
delete all the files that you find. then rebot your pc. don't try this this might
be a different thing from what problem you are having. anothter problem it might
be a software running on the background to fix that you have to try to remove and
figure out what is the problem.

The dwwin.exe error message is being caused by Dr. Watson responding to a program
crashing when you are logging off or shutting down Windows. Here's how to stop the
dwwin.exe messages, so you can see what program is causing the problem:
Turn off Windows Application Error Reporting:
Press the 'Control Panel/System/Advanced/Error Reporting' button. Choose 'Disable
error reporting' and UNcheck the 'But notify me when critical errors occur' box.
Now you'll be able to see what program is crashing at shutdown.

I've had the same problem on a brand new Vostro 1510 and I seem to have got rid of
it (at least for now) by letting the updates for Google desktop run through to completion.
Fingers crossed !!!

Hi. You have posted to a very old thread here which has a lot of information and
tips on how to troubleshoot the problem. What worries me is that you say you know
nothing about computers, so I would think that none of these tips make much sense
to you! In layman's terms then, I would advise getting someone with more knowledge
to have a look at your problem and direct them to this thread for clues. What is
happening on your PC is that the in-built diagnostic (Dr Watson, or DWWIN.EXE) is
finding a problem, but it will need some technical know-how to get to the bottom
of it. Cheers. Spexx.

Look at the dates on this thread!!! This has been going on for 6 freekin years.
Thanks again, Microsoft!!!
BTW - Yes I get the message on my laptop everytime I shut it down.
FWIW - It looks like DrWatson is trying to report an error, but get's stuck in the
background and never completes the process. Then when you shutdown Windows, you
get the error that it's trying to load (DrWatson dll) but can't and now the OS is
shutting down.

Yep, it has been going on for as long as XP has been around. Hardly surprising, because
it is a diagnostic program trying to report on some other bit of software that has
gone wrong. Sometimes, the logs are useful, most times they are junk. In general,
the more bells, whistles, frills and downright useless embellishments added to Windows,
the more likely it is that Dr Watson will have to be woken up to do his job. Cheers.

Just received a brand new Dell Latitude D630. Uninstalled almost everything that
came installed by the manucfacturer.
I was about to just reformat and reinstall when i decided to remove what i usually
install so i did not suspect this apps to be the problem but It was Google desktop
and Google toolbar. one of the two. As soon as i uninstalled them, the error stopped.

This fixed my ddwin.exe error on shutdown.
Just re-registers Dr Watson as the default application debugger. This was on a brand
new Dell. Just pulled it out of the box this morning and installed updates/software.
Highly recommend trying this simple fix first.

I was getting this error part way down a lengthy build and was told that the problem
might be that the TEMP and/or TMP environment variables contained too long a pathname.
Sure enough after I set them both to something smalll, like c:\temp,
the problem went away.

This problem is not actually a result of anything Microsoft has done wrong. Dr.
Watson is getting called up because one of the applications running crashed (or encountered
some other type of error). When shutting down the computer, dwwin is forcefully
closed.
Any application can cause dwwin to be launched. It seems like this happens most
often when applications are shutting themselves down improperly. Since the computer
is shutting down anyway, dwwin gets called up and immediately shutdown.
