Question about 'How do I stop a program from running whenever I start Windows?'

I have a question about How do I stop a program from running whenever I start Windows?:

I'm trying to help a friend that has a problem similar to a previous posting regarding desktop.ini. Her problem is that every time she starts up her computer the Window's Folder from Windows Explorer shows up on top of her desktop covering it completely. She can get rid of it by closing it, however it is an annoyance and a puzzle as to why it started appearing recently. She would like to prevent it from showing up whenever she turns on her computer. I went to Programs; then Startup, but did not find any reference to Windows. I then went to Start, Run, and typed in "msconfig" hit OK. I clicked on the Startup tab and unchecked C:\Windows and entered OK. I then did a reboot and got the following message: "You have used the System Configuration Utility to make changes to the way Windows starts. The System Configuration Utility is currently in Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows starts. Choose the normal Startup mode on the General tab to start Windows normally and undo the changes you made using the System Configuration Utility." I decided to cancel the change and clicked OK and chose the normal startup mode. Anyone have any ideas how to get rid od the Windows folder from appearing at startup and also maintain the "Normal Startup" mode? Thanks

Don't click the OK button, that will put all your check-marks back in the startup selections. Instead close the dialog box by the 'x' in the top right corner, your changes will still be in effect.

Thank you! My friend still has the problem after almost a year now, and decided that this was something that she would have to live with. We'll try your suggestion and hopefully her problem will be a thing of the past. Thanks again, Bob

I went to windows and ran msconfig and tried unchecking things. But just within a couple of seconds of browsing, the thing closes on me and I have to go to start/ run and run msconfig again. It keeps closing on me. I have only a couple of seconds before it closes on me again. What's wrong with my computer?

Run a Full System Virus scan. This sounds like a nice little virus... chances are... if it's closing the msconfig, it'll probably close regedit,regedit32,and any virus scanning utils. use the symantec.com online scan tool and proceed to remove the bugger manually.
