Could the CPU be overheating? Media Player iof course uses the display drivers heavily,
are there any updates for your driver? Have you installed Service Pack One (in case
it's an XP glitch)?

I have even left the case open with a very large desktop fan pointing in
I have installed all service packs
It even froze while installing XP after F disking

Check the event logs both system and application. They're in the Administrative
Tools in the Control Panel. See if the problem occurs in Safe Mode. If XP is not
installed, install with one hard drive and one stick of memory , the video card and
once cdrom. If problems occur, there are few components to verify; if AOK add components
one by one until the problems begin.

I have solved the problem
it was the cpu fan breaking down every now and then I only realised when it got worse
and stopped working altogether
I have fitted a new liquid cooled heat sink and fan and its working great
