Printer drivers

I have just done a clean install of windows XP professional. I have downloaded the latest driver for my Epson stylus 480, in which epson advises you to ignore the fact that the drivers are not XP certified, and installed them. the test page printed fine but i get communication errors when i try to print anything else. the printer runs on a parralel port through a primax scanner, an arrangement that worked in windows 98 and ME. i have upgraded the ram too but nothing works. Please could someone help me before i reinstall 98!

the obvious step is to remove the scanner and hook the printer directly to the parallel port.

It's unfortunate that you don't have the model with the USB port in it. Epsons usually were the worst on port sharing so try it without the scanner in the chain. Also, if the software is looking for IRQ 7 and XP hasn't assigned that IRQ that may be part of the problem. There could be driver conflicts with both devices sharing the port. If nothing works, you may have to resort to adding a parallel port card if you have an open slot and separate the two devices. Lastly is uninstall the printer and software, connect the printer directly to the port and reinstall the software. If it works, then add the scanner into the chain. If it stops working you will have no choice but to add the parallel port card (they are pretty cheap now) and assign one of the two devices to it. This is usually better anyway as it results in less conflicts, lockups etc. Good Luck! C K

I haven't solved the problem despite the helpful comments. I must admit I hadn't thought of the scanner driver. I just re installed the old software and XP had no (apparent) problems with it. can you let me have the driver, or let me know where to find it? I have to say I am beginning to think that it could be a printer malfunction rather than a driver issue. i will take it to another machine to test soon. Thanks

I do have the same problem too. A communication error messsage shows up every time I print. Actually, the print comes out OK. However an ink gage shows no information. I guess sending data to printer works but the data from printer path is broken. My system is configured double boot with Windows98 SE and Windows XP Pro. Windows 98 SE part works fine so that there should be no hardware issue. I do connect with USB and don't have scanner. I used driver for Windows XP from Epson site. Anybody with working driver?

Same kind of thing here. My mate has Epson C60, install the latest driver, but immediately 2 of the 3 lights flash on the printer and so does the "communication error" message. Connection is by USB, but cant get any printing out of it even. Please anyone who has any decent ideas

After I upgraded to Windows XP, I was told xp does not support printing 7 inch checks on a dot matrix printer. XP will only print whole pages and will not let you print a document of less than one full page. I understand that Microsoft does not plan to fix it's error.

Robert, I don't have much info for you but came across this looking to solve the same problem but ON Windows 98. Epson added support for XP at: http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supAdvice.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes¬eoid=17766 Again, I am still searching, but I think the entry level Epsons are touchy about working in ECP mode. Try rebooting and in set-up changing your printer config to bidirectional just to see if that is it.

Regarding "communication errors" when printing to an Epson when the print out does print -- simply turn off the communication error notification under the printer's Properties | Utility | Speed & Progress, Monitoring Preferences. I went through driver updating, deleting and re-adding, and finally stumbled upon the area where to turn off notifications. Works for me!

I also have a problem with XP printing with a dot matrix printer to a 7 inch check form. My printer prints, however only letter size documents and forms. It appears I need a new generic driver. I would appreciate any help you can offer. I am so frustated.

I changed software packages, to Peachtree, and the software permits me to print to dot matrix checks. Peachtree has the check forms and they seem to work fine.

you have to create a custom form under server properties under printers and faxes and use that form for the generic printer.

Hi, I already create a custom form, but when I try to select that form with the 'generic text/only' driver it doesn't appear. Any help?

Now I must use a PC with windows 98 to print some reports on this printer (generic driver). I didn't find an answer to this problem in the forums. Nobody answered my question 4 months ago. Any help?

I have a dell computer with Windows XP that does not have a parallel printer port. I have a PCI card parallel port installed, but my printer, Panasonic KXP1121, will not work with older dos-based programs. It runs perfectly with windows or staroffice programes. The underlying problem is that the PCI printer port is automatically assigned to LPT3, whereas the dos programes print thro LPT1. Switching the LPT3 to LPT1 at the Control Panel will disable the printer altogether.
