Question about 'What to do about error messages during Windows startup'

I have this annoying error message during xp startup.
It says "Can't run 16-bit program.Insufficient memory. Please quit one or more windows
application."
Is it anything to do with any of my installed/uninstalled programs? It seems that
this message appeared after i removed my Borland Turbo++ program.
Help me get rid of it.

Unless it was a pretty old program, it shouldn't have been 16-bit.
Check under C:\ to see if you have an autoexec.bat file that may be causing a problem.
(it will likely be a hidden file. There is also an autoexec.nt file under your
system folder. If you just do a file search for autoexec, they will both show up
in the search window and can be looked at with notepad (make sure to uncheck the
"always ope..." box before telling it to open :-)

I have opened three hidden files for autoexec.nt which refet to sound blaster. One
of the lines seems to refer to 16 bit, without mentioning the word "bit". All three
autoexec files were modified 8/18/02 - I assume this is when my XP computer was built.
Now what do I do to get rid of the annoying message.

Hi,
I just had the same issue. Cleared the startups and its works fine. I suggest you
try this.
Start--Run---msconfig--click on the "startup" tab, untick everything (In Windows
XP).
Its worked with me. Hope it works with you ;)

Use the `subst` DOS command to map a drive to the directory that contains the executable.
It worked for me.

Good luck!
Claus.

Thanks DJ. It worked for me too but why is that tick option there. Does unticking
them make a difference to the running of my computer?
