The password that will not go away

I have a question about a password problem in XP. I set up the Dial-up connection
with no problem, but my brother(in whose name the account is held), changed his password.
I've had no problem changing it in the connection before, but this time, the program
insists on saving the OLD password and not the New password. I've hit the "Remember
this password" button when the login screen comes up; I've deleted the account completely
and set up a new Dialup connection (twice); I've gone into Control Panel to set up
a new Dialup connection, but when I restart the program to connect to the Internet,
there's that stupid wrong password again. It does this with any program I use on
the Internet. (Right now, I use Eudora4.2-love it!; and Opera), but it wouldn't change
for MS programs either. I have anti-virus programs that can update themselves, but
I can't use this feature because I have to manually enter the right password each
time I log on. Can anyone help me? Thank you!

My suggestion would be to create another dialup connection to the ISP, LEAVING the
one that is wrong in there for now, and creating a 2nd one. Setup all the information,
including the correct username and password. Connect using that dialup connection.
Once you have connected with the new one, remove the old one. That should take care
of the issue. Please let me know if that took care of your problem.
Thanx and Good Luck.

I tried that , didn't work. I think its because the pwl file where passwords are
kept are entered by username , which can't be changed without a lot of trouble, so
thank you very much, I'll keep looking and hoping

I've just got another pc with windows XP and had the same problem, that ther seemed
to be a bogus password and that xp would not save mine, I have eventually found that
for some reason there is an unknown account on my PC, I deleted this account and
everything seems ok.
I found this account using the following sequence:
Control panel, select System, select advanced tab, select user profiles, select settings.
if there is a spurious account listed, delete, then try and dial up and save your
password
hope this helps.........good luck

I just tried this fix and it worked! Thanks! I'm still concerned that I don't have
any idea why I had an "unkown account" set as a default, though.

I tried all of the above... I still can't get rid of the old password in my dial-up
connection. I re-installed IE6, re-installed dial-up connections, made other dial-up
connections, re-installed modem....
Any ideas on how to get rid of this old dial-up connectionl

I just ran across this problem on windows 2000 Pro. The solution for me was to set
a windows password to the current user & admin accounts. Password still appears 16
characters long, but works properly now. Perhaps it is windows security being buggy?

Thanks for the idea Wolf but the password still comes back! It's uncanny. The same
thing has happened on my wife's PC the SECOND time she used it! Another bit of Microsoft
'added value'?

I have exactly the same problem on my xp system, but don't want to set up a windows
user log-in screen. Has anyone established what is causing this and what the solution
is?

Does anyone have Microsoft KB link that addresses this problem for XP? Also, I don't
follow the fix with the extra account. I don't have a "system" selection in the
Control Panel. Am I missing something?

John - I have this problem and after much research for an answer I've been told by
a "Techy" that it's a built in security item. The system automatically adds a number
of ***or IIII into the dialogue box to foil code crackers, should someone have unauthorised
access to the computer, well it sounds possible I guess!

My clients daughter died unexpectly and we cannot get into the computer because
we don't know the password. How can we bypass the password? We are in quiet a dilemma.

I had the same problem, but finally found a fix. My real password was 8 characters
long and the incorrect one that wouldn't go away was 16 characters. I typed in my
8 character password plus 8 SPACES. My ISP accepted the slightly altered real password
and XP happily saved it. No more problems.

The spaces sounded like a great solution! Sadly, my ISP is a bit less accepting.
The problem only occurs in Dial-up Connection, so I usually use a shortcut I've made
called Connect [name of ISP]. That one does remember my password correctly. Still,
it would be nice if the pop-up connection box worked...!

re: The password that will not go away - SOLVED

I feel a bit silly now... It turns out that even when the Dial-up dialogue box shows
16 dots, the computer is still remembering and sending my (shorter) password correctly!
I'm not sure whether in the beginning it was sending the wrong password or not, but
now it's all working. I was just fooled by that long row of dots!
Pfew. Couldn't they just add a note explaining this?
Good luck to you all,
Enna

I can't get startup before it asks for password

My Windows XP Pro goes right to a "administratorlake" window and asks for "client
security passphrase". (I do have to hit control, alt, delete to get to the administratorlake
window)....I have no passphrase for administratorlake and that is the only window
I can get to...no startup window etc...the screen is black except for that window
with nothing else for me to attempt to try. How do I get rid of that box-passphrase
attempt to just get to windows xp?
