What motherboard are you using?
What processor are you using?
What version of XP are you using?
Where did you purchase XP?

Same thing happened to me after resizing and moving
my system partition w/ acronis partitioner.
I thought i was all smart too for adding an entry in
the boot.ini file that would reflect my new set up.
i hadnt planned on any microsoft shinnanigans.
I did a google search and it appears windows doesnt
like to boot a partition that has changed size.
I dont know if your problem is related, but this is what
happened to me ...

This problem occurs because the hash ID stored in your OS at XP activation doesn't
match the new calculated hash ID.
Reasons : new hard drive, new partition size...
What to do : the only method i know is to use your windows XP Cd to repair your previous
installation. It will re-run the activation phase at the end of the repair process.
Of course your system files will ALL be overwritten, including Service pack, microsoft
fixes downloaded from windows update, moded files (if you had some).
Yes i know it's sooo convenient but...it's Microsoft !

ya the problem is really not a easily feasible one
you need to repair your xp with winxp cd
this problem generaaly comes because of any change made in the partition or uncompatible
change with the harddrive
thanx alot have a nice time

So what you're saying is that if you do backups of your XP parition and then one
day your drive craps out, you cannot install a new drive and restore the image?

Windows XP generates a hash code when installed. This is generated by checking various
hardware components. Every time you start XP it regenerates this hash code and checks
it against the one stored on your HDD. If a major hardware change takes place, the
hash code generated at boot time does not check out against the one stored, and you
get locked out with a 0x80090006 error.
What Microsoft should do is allow this hash code to be updated by the end user for
a maximum of say three times per install. I recently upgraded my hdd to a 60GB,
copied everything across and it boots to the login screen, but after I enter username
and pswd it goes away for approx 10 secs and comes back with the error. Like the
other person, my XP CD is legitimate, but I don't want to reload everything - it
would take many hours. I'm seriously hacked off - I understand Microsoft's reasons
for trying to stamp out piracy, but honest people are being messed around too - maybe
we should all sue Microsoft for the time wasted on reloads... but does anyone ever
win against Microsoft ??? Don't think so, not even the US government !

re: HELP!!!, Windows wont let me loggin, Error Code: 0x80090006 I GOT!!!

I Got!!!
Simply copy the partitions (with Partition Magic) to the new volume.
example:
HD1 (part 1=documents and part 2=system) using the Partition Magic (in my case) i
blank the new HD (excluding every partition) then right click on the part1 choosing
to copy that to HD2 and them the same with part2 (be sure that the new partition
created in the new volume-HD- was marked as active)

I just updated my wife's IBM Thinkpad HDD (XP Pro SP1) using Ghost 2003 and just
got this problem. Sorry if this 'solution' is more than a year old... but I hope
this will help future visitors looking for a solution (like I tried to).
The 'fdisk /mbr' solution should work if your HDD has FAT32 partition(s). Didnt work
for me as I only have one NTFS partition for the whole drive - fdisk said no drives
found!!!
I think Microsoft's Knowledge Base has grouped a series of these problems into another
article.
It's now here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914232/en-us
and it asks Ghost users to rebuild the Ghost image with the '-FDSZ' option. Huh?!!
My solution:
Use Ghost's 'gdisk' utility to reinitialize the Master Boot Record (MBR) for the
drive and IMMEDIATELY reboot. Command is:
A:\> gdisk 1 /MBR
where 1 is my 1st disk.
When XP boots in and after logging in, your system tray will show 'New hardware found',
'New Harddisk...'. After that, a pop-up will indicate that XP has 'installed drivers'
(yeah right!) for your new hardware and request a reboot. Do it and you're done.
Notes:
It seems, that the 'activation hash code' is stored in the HDD's MBR. Ghost's '-FDSZ'
option means dont copy drive signature over fr the old drive. Whacking off the MBR
with gdisk forces XP SP1 to rebuild this and rehash all over again - and Microsoft
calls this 'installing new drivers for your new hardware'...
XEQ.

Hmmm - your answer to an 8-year old issue is a little obscure.

Hi,
I had exacxtly the same problem on a XP NTFS computer , i solved it as follow:
- i ran an anti-virus (6 viruses found) from "safe mode" (not networking), but i
had the same error message (0x80090006).
- none of the above suggestion worked, only "restore my computer to an earlier time"
worked!
I ran it from "safe made" (not with networking option).
Hope this help,
A.
