Use the msconfig utility in Windows XP which will allow you to stop items running at start up. Select RUN and type msconfig. I find it very useful for this issue.

Click on "run"
type "msconfig"
click the tab for startup
uncheck the offending program(s)
click apply and ok
restart
that should do it!

good luck
