Using Nero In-CD in Windows XP?'
Friday, September 6, 2002 at 2:52 am

I have been backing up data files automatically onto CD-RW formatted with In-CD on my old Win ME PC. Having upgraded to a new Win XP machine I cannot format disks with In-CD. The result is a disk with no free space and a single 0 KB Non-Allocatable List file. I have downloaded the latest drivers from Nero. Can anyone help?

I have the same problem! I have never been able to make it work. I've tried InCD versions 3.31 & 3.37. After formatting a new CDRW, it says can't access the drive because it is full. I've tried several new CDRW disks. One time I formatted a CD and it worked, but the next time I put the CD back in the drive it failed.

I'm using latest version of In-CD 3.37.0 downloaded a couple of days ago. I've found one old CD-ROM formatted on an earlier version which works (sometimes), but all the others, including any I try to format, are full / read-only.

Latest version of In-CD does strange things: I can now read/write to a disk in the drive, but if I eject and replace with the same or a new disk, I get the message "Insert a disk into drive F:". When I reboot, it loads In-CD and crashes, reporting a "Serious Error" - Microsoft crash report says this is due to an unknown device driver. However the disk is now read/writeable. Hurrah! Until I try to change it. Nero have not replied to my request for assistance.

I am new to both XP-Pro and InCD, but XP won't read nor accept Packet CD which I've been using... My InCD Formats and says it's writing, but then there's no data other than formating on the CDRW... if I reject it and reinsert it either the arrow stays red or it instantly crashes the system... after this restart the arrow is back to green but the disk is empty and then a crash is eminent... has anybody come up with some answers to this issue... if the About boys have, they sure aren't talking! No answer to 3 posts and 3 emails... not so much as a robot reply

Let me add my complaint to this list too. I recently tried using the CD-RW software with Windows but I didn't like it so I tried using InCD. At first I installed the version that came with my Nero CD but that didn't work at all so I went to the Ahead web site and downloaded the latest version 3.3.7. Upon reboot I pop in a CD-RW disk and the arrow goes green. Since the disk has junk on it from previous usage on my Win98 computer I decide to format it. After the format appears to finish a new process starts stating something along the lines of "Scan RW and mark undetectable sectors". In the end I get a red arrow and a toasted CD that InCD seems to think had tons of errors. Frustrating but I take it as an anomaly and try again, and again, and again. No luck. Soon I will have no CD-RW's. Also, I have 3 different brands. An HP CD-RW that came with my old HP CD-RW drive, my ASUS CD-RW that came with my new CD-RW drive, and some Pacific Digital CD-RW's. I don't think it's the CD's. I don't think it's the drive. I think it's either the Windows CD-RW software (made by Roxio) or InCD. I'm guessing it's the fact that the old software was never uninstalled and somehow it still has its grubby fingers in the driver. Would anyone know how to get rid of the included Windows software?

I experienced similar problems with InCD 3.37. (I use WinXP SP1.) If I insert the already formated CD-RW, InCD recognizes it, and I can copy to it. But when I eject and reinsert, InCD won't recognize, plus the whole system becomes instable. SOLUTION: I uninstalled InCD 3.37 and reinstalled version 3.31. I'm using it without problems. --Sib Tiger

I have this problem and have found 1 solution. Format the Disc in InCD. Eject it. Put it back in. Shows as 0k free. Open the Disc in Explorer and Under CD Writing Tasks select Erase this CD-RW. This allows me to use it. Dunno if its doing it properly. I might go back to DirectCD

I had been having many of the problems indicated here. I had previously installed the free UDF reader put out by Adaptec. Apparently there was a conflict between it and InCD, because when I uninstalled that reader, then disabled windows XP support for burning CDs (like you mention), it started working. So if anybody has a separate UDF reader installed, uninstall it and see if that helps.

The software sucks.Really it's that simple. I had to uninstall WinXP SP-1 Clear the registry of ANY reference to Ahead or Nero and INCD. Reinstall WinXP And then reinstall the older version of INCD (3.20). It works now after all that. Tech support at Nero is a joke. They don't reply to e-mail or answer the phone. I would suggest that anyone looking into this software either look elsewhere or stick with the "Older" versions Sunday, December 22, 2002 at 4:23 am, Steve wrote:

I am using ver 3.3.6 with XP pro and it seems to be working Ok except that when I load a formatted CD-RW, the eject button will not work on my drive. Ihave to right click on the CD icon and do an eject in software. Is it Nero/XP or my drive?

I just received this from Ahead Tech support: Dear Customer, Please use the following troubleshooting tips. This is normally caused by driver conflicts. Please take the following steps: a) Upgrade to the latest InCD from our web site at www.nero.com/en/download.htm b) Go to your Windows Explorer or My Computer and right click on your Recorders drive letter, and then go to the "Recorder" Tab and in that window disable the option for "Enable Recording on this Drive". c) On some systems InCD will have trouble with Windows Media Player, because it uses an Adaptec driver that can conflict with InCD. To resolve this, go to your Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs feature and uninstall the Windows Media Player program. Then reinstall Windows Media Player, but without the Adaptec driver component. d) Make sure there are no programs running in the background before you try the format with InCD. And make sure to use Nero to do a FULL erase on the CDRW media before you format with InCD. e) Try with DMA enabled and disabled for your CD Recorder and CDROM/DVDROM drives. To do this go to your Control Panel->Systems->Hardware->Device Manager and from there double-click on the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers. Right-click on the Primary IDE Channel and go to Properties>Advanced Settings, and change Transfer Mode to "DMA if available". Do the same for the Secondary IDE Channel f) Disable the "PowerSave" feature for your computer before formatting. This may cause the recorder to disconnect during the format process, and thereby causing InCD to error out. g) If you are able to format the CDRW media, but after the format it fails to mount, or mounts but will not allow you to write to the CDRW as it reports 0MB of space available on the CD, this is caused 90% of the time by old firmware for your recorder. Or the below drivers. Locate the below drivers and rename to .bac extensions and reboot... Cdudf_XP.sys Udfreadr_XP.sys

I feel your pain. I have Nero 3.37 and cannot format rw disks in UDF format to use as an extended large volume disk drive in Windows XP. The disk formats but then reads an error message at the end and tells me to insert a new disk and reboot. This feature worked extremely well with my Windows 98 FE and I really miss it. Most other Nero options work flawlessly and it's extremely fast with my re-writer. I tried all of the solutions suggested except the removal of Windows Media Player. I guess that will be my last hope. If anyone has a new suggestion or solution please respond. Joe

You cannot eject a InCD formatted disc from the CD-RW drive by pressing the eject button on the drive. You need to select [Eject] from the menu. (1) Right click on the InCD indicator in the tasktray on the taskbar, and select [Eject] from the pop-up menu or right click on the CD-ROM drive symbol in the Windows file browser and select [Eject] from here. (2) The CD-RW disc will be ejected, as is.

Yes I had the same problems I reinstall incd and it worked fine ? It seems that when you upgrade nero it causes Incd to act up??? And XP has a few updates to fix some cd burner troubles. I formatted a disk and i had to restart my computer to get XP to reconize the disk go figure Just a few ways that i finally got it to all work together Thanks Ella

I finally got Nero working right under WinXP (after three days). I did the following: 1) Uninstall all CD-writer software (Nero, EasyCD) 2) Delete the UpperFilter/LowerFilter registry entries (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\UpperFilter and ...\LowerFilter. 3) Re-install Nero, and Nero WMP plug-in 4) This is the part that did the trick: Go to the device manager and uninstall your CD-ROM drive. Then scan for hardware changes and let XP re-install it. This resets the registry entries that allow "Send to CD" to work. After doing this, I can use "Send to CD" and also Nero - actually both on the same physical CD. Good luck. It's definitely frustrating.

I found that by simply using the Program Compatability Wizard (under accessories) Nero works fine. It only takes a minute and makes a driver switch automatically. I hope this is useful and saves much grief. The "wizard" shows some vestage of IBM's prime directive of downward compatability still lives. Thank you IBM.

Try downloading the tool from ahead called nero burning rights URL: ftp://ftp6.nero.com/NeroBurnRightsInstaller.exe You might even have to modify the security policys for xp. Nero seem to work fine when you have administrator rights, but as a user or even a power user it could be trouble. ****** from aheads supportsite: 1. Why do I need Nero BurnRights? Since Windows 2000 and Windows XP do not grant access to low level drivers for users without administrative rights it's not possible for them to burn CDs with Nero. 2. What is the purpose of Nero BurnRights? Nero BurnRights allows users without administrative rights to burn CDs with Nero. The administrator is able to setup user accounts with exclusive "burn rights" for Nero. 3. How do I use Nero BurnRights? Please download the installer file and doubleclick the file to start the installation. Please make sure that you are logged onto the system as administrator. You will find a new entry in Start/Settings/Control Panel/Nero BurnRights. Doubleclick it to start the application. Note: If you select "Members of User Group Nero" you will be asked to agree the generation of a new user group "Nero". Every change of the Rights Level Settings requires a reboot (including the reset). Now you can add users to the group "Nero". ****** from another forum: CD-Rom Burning - Allow limited users access to CD Burning: To allow Limited User's to burn CD's, click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT. Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon Look in the right pane for AllocateDASD and double click the entry. Set the value to 2.

On PRO, this is exposed in Local Security Policy under Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options "Devices: Allowed to format and eject removable media" For XP Pro, you can do this by clicking Start, Run and entering SECPOL.MSC. Go to Local Policies, Security Options, look in the right pane for Devices: Allowed to Format and eject removable media. Set this option to Administrators and Interactive Users //endor - computer engineer.

Ok I have a problem that I dont see listed up there. I can burn CDs fine but as soon as it's finished the program freezes. My cdr drive light is on solid and wont open using the button. I end up having to reset the computer everytime I burn a cd.

We have had the same problem exactly. We now are running two PC's with same CD-RW drives and InCD v 3.51.91 and Nero v 5.5.10.0. One works fine and the other doesn't. I think the first thing to try is trun off the 'Enable CD Recording on this drive' which is found on the 'INCD Page settings' tab of the Drive Properties. I also think that if you have any old writing software such as Adaptec UDF, then it is best to get rid of it, as tried by someone else on this site. Regard Paul

Hi folks Well we had some major success today! We are running XP Pro on both our machines, and have had some difficulties getting 'drag and drop' to work on one of them, whilst the other, which has the same hardware CD-RW drive, did not allow access to the discs, and reported that there was no space on them. So 07/06/03 - I made a note of the Nero and In-CD settings on one machine, and duplicated them on the other. I think one key difference may be turning off the "Enable CD recording on the drive" option which is found on the 'Recording' tab in the CD drive Properties window. [I discovered from the MS Knowledge base that this appears to be responsible for Windows using the 'Staging Post' system of holding the files prior to copying them.] Next I uninstalled both Nero and In-CD from the troublesome machine; and the installed the Nero v5 disc that I had, and then ran the update which I had downloaded from the Nero site. I did not install the old In-CD version from the disc. I simply ran the new version that I had downloaded. The files are called: Nero 55100.exe and INCD35191UP.exe In-CD v3.51.91 and Nero 5.5.10.0 were now freshly installed on the troublesome machine, just like the ok one; and yet to our frustration, we still had the immovable red arrow on the In-CD icon in the sys tray, and the drive properties said the disk had no available space on it, and we could not add anything to a newly formatted disc. However, I noticed whilst uninstalling the old versions of Nero and In-CD, that the troublesome machine had something that the ok one did not!!! ie: Adaptec UDF Reader Software, which I do not recall ever installing on it. When WE REMOVED THE ADAPTEC UDF READER SOFTWARE using 'Add/Remove Programs' in Control Panel, and re-booted, the wonderful little green arrow appeared in the In-CD icon in the sys tray, and we found there was space to write to on our CD-RW disc. Drag and drop now works fine on both our machines!!! My friend has the same versions of In-CD and Nero installed, and yet he has problems with drag and drop on his laptop, and so I will be checking to see whether he has Adaptec hiding somewhere on his machine. Good luck to all! Regards Paul

I had the same problem with the InCd program and the CD burner (both the InCd software that was bundled with it and the latest version I downloaded). I recently found on Microsoft's Knowledge base an article that stated Windows XP is NOT compatible with CD-R/R-W programs that use the UDF ("drag-and-drop") file format, including InCd and several others (e.g., RecordMaxNow). I uninstalled it, and am planning to use Nero and the built-in XP CD burning instead.

I am not the best at reconfiguring the computer, but the problems with InCD are a headache! Where will I find the "built-in XP CD burning" and what do I do to enable it???? Thanks!

First, I'm using W98SE. I'm posting here because I think this may help someone. I had a similar problem -- non-allocatable space file, zero bytes, etc. I got rid of it by right-clicking on the "InCD" icon in the system tray, and selecting "Options". Put a check in the "MRW Format all drives". Click "Apply". Now, take one of those disks with the "non-allocatable space" files in your drive, and use InCD to format it. Make sure the "MRW Format all drives" is still selected. You will get a popup about two minutes into the process that says "format completed", or something similar. Ignore it, and wait until all the lights stop flashing on the CD. Eject the disk, put the disk back in, and check it out. Hopefully, the disk will be empty. Note that not all drives support the "Mount Rainier Format". I have no answer for that. But, this worked for me. My version of InCD is 4.0.1.0. For more about the Mount Rainier format, try: http://www.softarch.com/us/products/WriteCDRW/mtrainierfaqs.html. Do you really have to wait until the lights stop flashing, or could you quit when the popup says "format complete"? Don't know, haven't tested it, but again -- this worked, after weeks of copying from a CD-R/W, using xcopy32, and having it fail when it ran across the "non-allocatable space" file. Note that I did test the above as follows: Format without Mount Rainier: Result, the hated file is generated. Format with Mount Rainier: Result, no hated file. Re-format without Mount Rainier: It's back. Format with Mount Rainier: It's out of the building. Hope this helps, best wishes.

In-CD only works with CD-RW. It does NOT work with CD-R. Are all of you using the right CD? Nero comes with a bunch of completely unrelated programs. Read the instructions.

I'm using CDRW disks and can't get InCD to work. Can get all the other tools from Nero to work, can also use the XP 2 phase burning tool on a CDRW without problems and read the disk on aW2000 laptop - brilliant - don't like the 2 phase operation though. Have used Adaptec DirectCD before and Veritas DLA without any problem and both of them don't have the limitation on just using CDRW. I may go out and get the latest version DirectCD if none of the solutions in the above threads work. I'm only using Nero InCD because it came with the hardware.

I have In-CD version 4.0.0.37 . The following is part of the instructions. Notice at the end it mentions Mount Rainer is setup as the DEFAULT. You must have a Mount Rainier compatable drive. I dont. I bet this is what is screwing everybody up! CD-MRW DVD+MRW (Mount Rainier) You can only format discs in Mount Rainier format if you have a recorder, which supports this format. To format discs in the so-called MRW (Mount Rainier) format using InCD, you must check the corresponding check box. The RW disc will then become a MRW disc. Drives which do not support MRW format can only read these discs with a remapper (see the section 'Remapper'). The check box is in the InCD Options dialog box, and is only visible if the recorder supports this function. There is more information about this in the section 'Options'. You can find additional information about Mount Rainier at http://www.mt-rainier.org. In contrast to CD-RW and DVD-RW discs, MRW discs can be written to after only about two minutes of formatting. This does not mean that the MRW is fully formatted after two minutes, but simply that it is formatted sufficiently for you to be able to write data to it. The remainder of the formatting goes on in the background when you copy additional data to the MRW disc. It begins at the point where the last formatting process ended. You can only write data in MRW format with drives which support this format. You must also ensure that the 'MRW Format all drives' checkbox is checked. This is the default option.

I have an AOpen CRW5224 which I believe to be a Mount Rainier compatable drive. After unchecking the Mount Rainier option and also unchecking the XP burn option I could not INCD format a CDRW disk it would always fail the disk would be unusable and attempting to access the disk would make the system unstable so much so that the system could not be shut down without recycling the power. I could burn disks with standard nero ISO burning. I've now converted the machine to Roxio because my other machines use this technology as already described. I encountered similar problems which improved slightly when I uninstalled, via Device Manager, the CRW5224 to let XP reinstall it with the new software but was still unstable. I updated the firmware for the CRW5224 from 1.05 to 1.08 via 1.06 and 1.07 rebooting the machine each time and then uninstalling the CRW5224 to let XP reinstall it. It now seems to be stable although it's still early days. The moral of this story is make sure you are using the latest firmware for a recorder, readers can view the comments on the firmware upgrades for CRW5224 on the AOpen site.

I too experienced the problem referred to in Nero's online FAQ where format of a CDRW fails at the end. I tried unsuccessfully most of the strategems in this thread (each time waiting 20 or so minutes for the format to fail). I switched to Veritas DLA (drive letter access) and was able to format & use a CDRW within a couple of minutes. http://h20015.www2.hp.com/hub_search/document.jhtml?lc=en&docName=bph07940

I have been using Nero INcd and now find that it will not let me change any of my files or add new ones. I was using a Packed CD program with Win98se which would format both RW & R Disks but you could only change anything in the RW disks. It was put out by Mitsumi and was fantastic. Has any one else used it and do you know if there is a version out for XP. If replying to my message please put 306 in the subject . Gordon.

No free space on CD RW disc after UDF formatting with InCD
Thursday, March 18, 2004 at 4:52 am
Posted by Hans Granig (1 messages posted)

InCD from Nero can format a RW CD as UDF, but windows says that there is 170MB to 180 MB used and zero free space available on the formatted disc. I ran the cleanpack.zip files from Nero support & rebooted the machine. This is supposed to remove all Non Nero UDF-software references from the system registry. This did not help. All UDF programs were uninstalled from the control panel. This did not cause InCD to work either . I then searched the c: directory for udf* files and found one that was called udf-reader-uninstaller . exe ( by adaptec ). After this file was run & the system rebooted the adaptec unistall file was not present on the system anymore. But guess what .... the Nero INCD started to work !!! ie a green blob is visible in the taskbar INCD icon & there is free space on the CD RW disc when a InCD UDF formatted CD is inserted into the drive.

(Make sure you uninstall any other CD burning software BEFORE installing Nero software) Install Nero Burning Rom as normal BUT before installing the separate INCD exe file, right click it and select compatibility with Windows 2000. NEXT: You also need to disable the Windows XP INCD software. To do this, right click your CDRW drive in My Computer or Windows Explorer. Select properties/recording, then untick 'enable CD recording on this drive'

"General CleanTool" from Nero should get rid of any old stuff. However, that may not solve your problem. I have similar problems trying to write using InCd. Mine is intermittent. When it fouls up, hangs my system until I get error messages. I get back to normal by disabling the drive and then reenabling it. I doubt that Roxio can help you with this. This happens on my Internal Drive. I have an External Drive which works fine. I was thinking it might be my drive, but I see so many other complaints that I am thinking it is InCd. If you would like to commiserate further, feel free to respond. Milton

I've been through the same process, used the Nero utilities, ect with no luck. In XP look and see if data (example an MP3 file) can be selected and under the file menu, can it be sent to the CD Burner, is there a record tab under properties for the drive, if no, then XP does not recognize the unit as a burner. The registry will have to be changed. WARNING - be careful in this process. Click START and then RUN, in the box, type REGEDIT and click ok. By clicking on the +'s, navigate as follows HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives on the file menu, click EXPORT, in the box type backup of drives, click save. In the left panel click VOLUMES{GUILD} folder under drives, there will be a 32 character identifier for each CD Drive. In the right panel, double click DRIVE-TYPES, There will probably be a 3 in the VALUE DATA box, it should be changed to a 1 for a CD-R or a 2 for a CD-RW drive, click ok and quit regedit. Now go to My Computer, right click on the CD-Burner drive, click properties, you should have a record tab now, click enable CD Recording, for record speed, pick fastest. If NERO still does not see the drive, I have changed to a newer drive. Good Luck

4/25/05 Butch thanks for your reply to my posting. I was able to check the "Record to CD" in my "properties" for the drive. Sorry to report - no change. It may be the drive, but do all these other guys who have similar problems have bad drives also?

No, I don't think they are bad drives, I beleive that the problem is XP not recognizing some drives as burners. I ran the Nero utilities, updated the aspi files, all to no great help. I changed the register and that allowed XP to see them as burners, but still not recognized, because the drive speeds don't show up in the record properties as it would for a recognized drive. Some of the Nero programs were bundled with specific computers or drives and will work not outside of the original setups. I tried to get some new CD drivers from Driversguide.com, but the file was corrupt. I have 4 computers that I have been working with, with versions of 98, Home XP, XP Pro and about 5 different versions of Nero. The one thing I found was that changing the drives made the most difference. Out of 4 good CD Burners, Nero would see only one of the drives and that was with a retail version of Nero. Win 98 seen all the drives because the older drives came with drivers on floppy's, and when the drives are installed, Win 98 asks for the drivers. I know this is a big issue with XP and Nero. Well, back to the fire - Butch

Butch, thanks for your prompt response . I downloaded a file "pfc.vxd" from DriversGuide, but I don't even know how to implement it into my system. After hearing from you, I doubt if it would do any good, but if you can give me a tip as to how to try it, I will. Thanks, Milton

Thank you for mentioning the subject. My problems with INCD and Windows XP are 1. that the format process stops after about 20% of the action. 2. It is proving almost impossible to copy a CD: told I must use a CD-RW and not just a simple CD-R., and other refusals 3. There appears to me there is a compatibility problem with XP and INCD. Any ideas, Mike? Thanks.

I know this thread is very old but I have a slightly different problem with InCD & XP. InCD won't load with XP. I can't even manually start it - I click on a couple of the .exe files and a couple of minutes later I hear the 'critical' wav sound but don't know why. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling this. The result is the same. InCD appears but my AV (Kaspersky), firewall (Sygate), keyboard (Logitech) and Symantec Ghost programs don't load!!! This is a real b*mmer - anyone else experience this and perhaps found a solution? TIA!

Hello and finally I have the solution to this problem! (Using Nero InCD 5.0.0.4) 1. Click the Format Disc tab 2. Click the More button 3. Click the Down arrow under File System 4. Click UDF 2.0 (or anything above 1.5) 5. Click Quick under Format disc 6. Click the Start button

Ok, ive been getting the same problems.. Firstly my computer crashed, after reporting the problem I got a windows troubleshooter mssg which is this - http://oca.microsoft.com/en/response.aspx?SGD=a6c4b828-4033-43e2-b506-e6db0cfb978b&SID=898 It says that the reason its crashing is because of nero's InCDplugin and advises you to download/install the updated one.. After I done all that $hit everything seemed to be ok, but when i shut down my PC it just rebooted automatically, and even when i try and shut down the 2nd and 3rd time it does the same.. But even then when i tried to rip a music CD i noticed that for some reason my CD-ROM.CD-R was not working, it wasn't even there.. I kept getting the mssg "New hardware Found" but when it tried to find the drivers it couldn't.. And when I try to put the drivers in manually I cant cos i cant find the hardware.... Luckily for me the system restore worked, BUT, I keep getting the same error mssgs and telling me to install the updated InCD again.. I dont know what to do now.. Anyone figured this out yet ? ?
