Question about 'Things that slow down system bootup'

I have a question about Things that slow down system bootup:

I installed Windows XP service pack one yesterday, which, according to my computer was sucessful. When I restarted my computer it took almost 3 minutes to log on, and it has stayed this way (it only used to take about 10 seconds to log on). I am running a 1.8 Ghz machine with 512MB DDR Ram, and have at least 20GB hard drive space free. It would be great if anyone can help me. Thanks.

boot into safe mode and test the boot up time, this is the time it takes from when you see the desktop and have the hourglass until the arrow replaces the hourglass.if normal use msconfig and selective startup to find out what startup item or service is related to the delay.

you could try BootVis(google)...works for some.

I had the same issue. Tried to boot in safemode, but didn't really help. Then went to www.microsoft.com and in the top left Search field, typed Bootvis. This tool gives a lot of info, but can be used to check for problem startups (including the time it takes for each driver to load). As well, there is an option to Optimize Startup...I believe it reorganizes files to speed up the startup process.
