spoolsv.exe puts me at cpu usage 100% perpetually

it is real simple. i noticed my system running SUPER slow so i go to the windows task manager to see what the matter is and i find that cpu usage is at 100%. after a process of elimination i found that it is the spoolsv.exe file that is accounting for all of it. i end it and the cpu usage goes to 0 or 1%. after a few minutes it comes back on. it is always on! i have tried deleting it, incinerating it, installing new drivers and setting up my print jobs to bypass the spooler and go straight to the printer and every time i restart my computer the spoolsv.exe is back and the cpu usage is at 100%. i am in great need of someone much much smarter than me to help me solve this issue. please, help me oh great ones! i acknowledge my weakness and beg for your mercy. thank you, in advance!

Did you find a workaround for this problem? Unfortunately I have a Compaq ML370 that has also started to do the same. Keith.

I managed to solve the problem! On the ML370 all printers that were installed were not visible to me. So I decided to reinstall one of them. This in turn updated the list of installed printers, and showed me the rest of the already installed devices. I could then see that I had a stuck entry in one of the queues. On removal of this entry, the CPU dropped back down to normal levels of usage. Pity that Microsoft won't acknowledge this as a problem! regards, Keith.

I've been dealing with this same issue on a Compaq Evo D310 (I think that's the model) running XP Home. I originally had pegged it to my Epson Stylus C80 USB printer which sends out a bogus print job (ebapi.dll or something like that was its name) to monitor the printer's status. I got all the monitoring turned off and it seemed mostly fixed except when one of the kids would try to print something without the printer turned on. Anyway I'm sick of screwing with it. I'm just pissed off now. I've wasted too much time. Only related issue I found was that Novell issued a patch to one of the files in their client to address spoolsv.exe high utilization. I'll keeping mucking about and let you know if I find anything.

Spoolsv.exe = CPU hog Possible Cause: Print job still in que Suggested Fix: Cancel print job Step by Step: 1. Go to Settings>Control Panel>Printers 2. Locate pending print que under the documents column. 3. Double click on printer to pull up spool que. 4. Right click on first job and select cancel. Result: This should cancel the hung print job and free up the CPU. Typically this is the result of an incompatibility between the print job source and the printer driver. If you record the source of the job and the desired printer, you may be able to find out from the driver distributer where the conflict is originating-- it might be as simple as a font!!

Hi, I had the same problem a few hours ago, however if you delete this key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Environments\Windows NT x86\Drivers\Version-2] from the registry, it works fine. Remember modifying your registry can screw up your machine. However it did the trick for me Hope this helps. Ally

Thanks for the hits guys. I’ve also run into this problem with Windows XP and Epson Stylus C82. I could not get rid of this problem even after I removed all the bogus print jobs that I could find. Even uninstalling the printed completely didn’t do it. In the end, I uninstalled both the printer software and the printer port from Start>All Programs>Epson C82 (as supposed form the Control Panel). I can’t say why it would make a difference, but it seemed to do it for me. Cheers Czesiek

ditto basically.... I removed the Epson printer, driver and virtually every reference to anything Epson on my system (except for my Epson Perfection scanner) from the registry. Reinstalled the printer and driver and have not had any issues since.

I had the same problem and by doing the deletion of a hung printer job submitted to my shared printer over our small Microsoft Network the problem was immediately resolved. The fun is, that I didnt believe I had a hung print job since I had not submitted any print jobs to my printers - but somebody else did and I found out that for some reasons I suddenly had a printer called "Microsoft Office Document Image Writer"..I never installed that one, but this was the one that had the hung job and caused the 100% CPU usage. Thanks for the help

There is presently a virus that uses this file. Check Symantec's site for the latest update or information.

Thanks Lars, This solved the problem for me. So the basic problem is stuck queues. I had the 'microsoft whatever' printer too. and nope.. don't know where it came from. Kannan

Deleting all the Epson subkeys under the location mentioned below finally worked for me after I had been wrestling with this problem for weeks. Printer involved also was Epson C80, running under XP Pro, and had even persisted after a "repair" reinstall of XP. Thanks. Len Stuart

I have been experiencing this problem for the past few days.

Here is the fix.
1) Stop your Print Spooler Service (Under Control Panel > Administrative Tools >
Services)
2) Delete the files in the folder c:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\PRINTERS

There will be files in there called something like 00002.shd or 00020.spl.

They can be safely deleted. These are corrupt print jobs that are hung up in your
printer queue. After deleting the files, you can then restart your Print Spooler
Service and enjoy a normal computer once again.

On my computer the source of this problem was probably "Xerox TCP/IP port monitor". I uninstalled it and the problem disappeared.
