After installing XP Pro and Office 97 spell check in Outlook Express doesn't work. I receive this message "An error occured while the spelling was being checked." Any ideas? Thanks

From another post: You have to have a word processing application with spell check installed in order to have spell check in mail. My OFFICE 97 did not work with XP/mail/spell check. OFFICE 2000 and OFFICE XP work fine.

Mark, I've the same prob and searched the MS Knowledge Base where it notes the incompatibility of OutExp6 and proofing tools from Office, but MS doesn't provide any solution. A classic case of programmed redundancy where they want you to buy Office XP. Instead, I've gone back to Win2000Pro (which comes with OutExp5 which now allows me to use my Office97 to spell check emails. However, I'm yet to try Office2000 (with its own proofing tools) with Windows XP (with its OutExp6) to see if they are OK together. Alternatively, I'm thinking about putting WinXP back and trying to install a copy of OulookExp5 over its OutExp6. I doubt that will work, but its worth a try. I'm spending a lot of time trying for an easy answer. Any suggestions?? Good luck, TonyC

How To: Fix spell checking in Outlook Express 6 If you are running Windows XP and are also using Microsoft Office 97, you may find that spell checking does not work in Outlook Express 6.0. When you try to spell check a message, you receive the message "an error occurred whilst the spelling was being checked". The cause of this problem is a missing file which Outlook Express requires. Solution Obtain a copy of the file csapi3t1.dll and place it in the folder "Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof". Copies of this file may be extracted from the file mailnews.cab in an Internet Explorer 5.0 or 5.5 distribution set, the file win98_27.cab on a Windows 98 CD, or the file Win_10.cab on a Windows Me CD. A copy may also be downloaded by clicking on this link. Note: the spell checker will only work if you have a recent version of Microsoft Office. You didn't really expect Microsoft to support spell checkers in competitors' Office packages, did you?

Garth - We also have Microsoft Office 97 and just upgraded to Windows XP. We also copied the recommended *.dll file into the folder suggested and it still doesn't work. Did you ever solve your problem?

I am experiencing exactly the same problem under the same conditions with the suggested fixes in place, spell check still does not work and gives the standard error message. If you find a cure please forward.

Like you, I experienced the frustrations of following directions carefully only to find the problem was not fixed. I had overlooked the need to extract the file before placing it in the Proof folder. A simple step probably known to the more advanced folks solved the problem. Try it. Just right click on the file and choose Extract. It was convenient for me to place the extracted file on the desktop and drag/drop it into the proof folder. Hey, cumbersome, but it worked for me.

I found the simple fix after weeks of asking and hunting. Search for file CSAPI3T1.DLL on net. download and unzip. Open outlook express folder. Copy the file to your outlook express folder. Done. It's fixed.

I have outlook express 6 and office 97..I tried the one problem solver to copy the file from my cd ...but it did not work I still got the error message......THEN I found this wonderful web site.... I did this and it worked I down loaded the CSAPI3T1.DLL from here http://www2.whidbey.net/djdenham/csapi3t1.htm I copied it and put it on my desk top. Then I just went to my c:\program files\ outlook express and I opened the outlook express folder (another way to find this is to go to start then search for files and folders and search for outlook express in the C drive it will bring up a few folders you will need the Yellow folder you can double click it to open it) dragged the CSAPI3T1.DLL folder into the outlook folder (or highlight by putting the mouse on the CSAPI3T1.DLL folder then right click and cut) then you can go to the outlook folder and right click and paste it in the outlook folder ....IT WORKED LIKE A CHARM. FOR ME ...
