windows update not working

hello, i don't know if this is the right place to post but if anyone could help,
thanks

when i try to do windows update.. i'll click "install now" and it'll go through the
process of updating.. two things happen
1) some of the updates a box will pop up and says something to the effect of "this
software will not be installed"
2) after it's all said and done... NONE of the files have been installed.. they are
all in red on the windows update page...

also, when i try to install service pack 1, it says something is wrong with the update.inf
file and to turn on cryptographic service.. so i do... but it still doesn't work..
can anyone help pls? thanks!

Hi

You need to delete (or rename) the %SystemRoot%\System32\CatRoot2 folder or it
contents (but *not* CatRoot). You do this delete with e.g. Windows Explorer.
%SystemRoot% is usually C:\Windows so that means that you should delete the
directory (folder) C:\Windows\System32\CatRoot2.

I am currently having these problems with my laptop. I tried a while back to install the windows patch which would fix the vulnerability in Windows XP that the MSBlast worm is now exploiting, but had the same problem then. I have followed the advice outlined in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article #'s 822798 and 326815. Niether has fixed the problem - I still get the "Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf..." error message. Does anyone know of anything else I can try? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Same here...tried renaming catroot, goes a little further but gets the same error message...I wonder if SP1 needs to be reinstalled.

I tried renaming/deleting catroot2, and also tried the cmd method, but it is still the same, the update.inf integrity problem is still here... i opened the system32 folder and deleted the catroot2 again, then i found out as i was trying to install the update, catroot2 starts to be recreated (or i should say reborn) again... any ideas on what i should do?

I am having the same problem on a client's machine. Both XP SP1a and the RPC DCOM
patch fail for due to the 'update.inf' problem. Removed Catroot2 dozens of times.
I am working this problem, please tell me if you have any similarities to the following:

Compaq Presario 8000 desktop
OLD BIOS (never been updated)
Win XP Home (no SP)
Norton Anti-Virus (installed but not running when attempting update)
System Restore TURNED OFF

I have seen posts about this same problem with Sony Vaio machines.

I will post any useful results. TIA.

That makes at least 7 of us having this problem when attempting to follow the Microsoft workaround for the Update.inf/cryptographic svcs error. The suggested workaround is: 1. Stop cryptographic services 2. Rename (or delete) c:\windows\system32\catroot2 folder 3. Restart crypto svcs 4. Now attempt to install the patch again. Does not work. When you start Step 4, the catroot2 folder is re-created, causing the install to fail again. Sure hope someone can figure this one out! (and let us know!)

Still working it.

It looks like there is a possibility that the MS Root Certificate could be involved
in the problem.

Check your machine for the presence of this certificate by going to:
Internet Explorer
Tools Menu
Internet Options...
"Content" tab
"Certificates" button
"Trusted Root Certification Authorities" tab
Look for the presence of these two certs:
1) Microsoft Root Authority
2) Microsoft Root Certificate Authority
If both are present and OK, then this is not the problem.
If one or both is not there, then consult this MS KnowledgeBase page: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en=us;281458

Please post back if it works or not.

Try going into CTRL-ALT-DELETE and then end all the processes under the user names account, except explorer.exe and other programs that will make MS crash, so you can delete the CATROOT2 Folder. Worked for me. :)

Okay, got another lead, let's see if this one works...

From http://www.jsiinc.com/SUBM/tip6400/rh6448.htm

Says that the both Catroot2 *AND* Catroot subdirs can be a problem. As before:

net stop crytpsvc
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot oldcatroot
net start cryptsvc

Re-install patch and/or service pack.
I haven't tested this yet, but will along with Francis' suggestion to kill non-critical
processes from the Task Manager when I get to the computer.

PLEASE POST WHETHER FIX WORKS OR NOT!!

I have no problems successfully deleting the catroot2 folder (but restarting the crypto service does indeed recreate it). Count me as number 8 -- still can't install the patch b/c of the cryptographic error thingy. Dell desktop, XP Home. I'll try to also delete catroot in addition to catroot2 (tonight). Keep in mind, though, I've seen warnings against doing this. I'll see if making a backup helps. Microsoft, are you listing? Horton do you hear this Who?

A friend of mine was having this problem. She finally got it working by re-registering all these dlls. I know it sounds weird, but it worked. Not sure if it worked in combination with other solutions posted here because she had previously tried them all, but I would try this:

Start->Run->cmd
net start cryptsvc (to make sure it's running)
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll
exit
(she then ran the patch but it failed, so you may want to reboot at this point)
after reboot, patch worked!

Good luck.

Getting rid of the LovSan virus
Thursday, August 14, 2003 at 1:12 pm
Posted by Mohi (1 messages posted)

Hey, MJ. Thankx a lot man. Trust me without your help I would've gone insane today. You definitely know what you're talking about. Ever since I got that LovSan virus in my computer, it would restart my system as soon as I got connected to the internet. Despite the fact that I had downloaded the patch to get rid of that damn virus, I still couldn't install it.I would get the following message: "Setup could not verify the integrity of the file update.inf.Make sure the cryptographic service is running on this computer." I have tried other people's tips so as to changing the cryptographic services and running commands in the cmd. However, yours was the magic one that resolved all my problems. Steps are following: 1)Start Menu 2)Run 3)Type cmd.exe 4) RD /S /Q %SystemRoot%\System32\Catroot2 Then try to install the patch. It worked for me and hopefully, it should help you guys as well.

Nice job Mark, worked like a charm. I had to include a few more DLLs for this to
also work for Service Pack 1a.

regsvr32 mssip32.dll
regsvr32 urlmon.dll

Thanks for this one. Major time saver!

Sure looks like this is the answer to my 3-day headache.

One question: How will I know if I have to re-install the service pack and, if I have to, how is that done?

Is it on one of the CDs I got with the comp? (Sorry for the newbie-ness to all this)

Thanks.

when I tried this, I got this message: "the service cannot be started either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it." Is this why I'm getting the install error? How do I restart the cryptographic service ? I already tried registering all those separate dll files as suggested by another user. It said they were successfully installed, but no luck starting cryptsvc.

I tried doing this as well, but when I checked to see if cryptsvc was running it said it could not be started because it is disabled or has no enabled devices. So, what do I do now?

Create a new .txt file and paste the following into it: net start cryptsvc regsvr32 softpub.dll /s regsvr32 wintrust.dll /s regsvr32 initpki.dll /s regsvr32 dssenh.dll /s regsvr32 rsaenh.dll /s regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll /s regsvr32 sccbase.dll /s regsvr32 slbcsp.dll /s regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll /s exit Save and rename the file extension from .txt to .bat and you have a one step fix rather than manually typing them all in DOS.

Got all run together on accident. Insert a space after each regsvr32 blahblah.dll /s and it'll work.

I found that if you delete the folder Catroot2 in C:\windows\sytem32\ as well as type the above mentioned commands at the command prompt it always corrects the problem. Before when I mentioned the commands working I did not realize that it I had already deleted Catroot2 in an earlier attempt to fix the problem. I found out this morning that if you delete the foler then run the commands it works great.

I have made 2 batch files containing the following commands:

File 1:

net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot oldcatroot
net start cryptsvc

File 2:

@echo off
net start cryptsvc
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll
regsvr32 mssip32.dll
regsvr32 urlmon.dll
echo please reboot the machine and try again
pause
exit

Neither of the files help, even when used in combination.

Any new ideas??

All:

I too was having problems installing the MS-supplied Blaster patch. Finally realizing the CryptSvc errors were NOT related to the infection, I tried a handful of fixes, finally satisfied by Marc's suggestion.

Cheers.

I too have this problem still after trying all the suggextions in this thread (also well outlined at http://www.updatexp.com/cryptographic-service.html) Thanks to Mark L for that. i believe the problem now lies in the certification of trusted publishers, but i am unsure how to resolve. Any Security experts looking? any ideas ??

Well this solved it for me but I had to install both the missing Microsoft Root Authority certificate and the NO LIABILITY ACCEPTED, (c)97 VeriSign, Inc. but it works now. Thanks alot I have been messing with this for a while.

I too spent many hours on this problem messing with catroot2 and such. Here is the same info about re-registering the dlls from Microsoft (Knowledge Base 813442). It tells you all the other problems doing this fixes:http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;813442

Check the following (local) group policy settings: Group Policy -> User Configuration -> Windows Settings -> Internet Explorer Maintenance -> Security -> Authenticode Settings -> Enable Trusted Publisher Lockdown The box should be unchecked. Retry the Hotfix Installations / Windows Update Site again while Group Policies are active. Regards Majestix

Majestix. That one is the Winner. Thanks very much for your post. You have nailed my problem! Did not realise this lockdown would have such an impact. You might think that would advise of that problem in advance; but i don't recall seeing any such Caution message in any of the documnetation I looked at. Thanks again.

hey guys and gals, i have been wresting with this issue for quite some time as well. and Marcs suggestions above helped me fix 2 machines so i thank marc and all others for the help with those!! but unfortunately now i have a box that i am stuck on. i tried deleting the catroot2 folder and re-registering those dlls but i still can't get the cryptographic service running and still get that "setup could not verify the integrity of the file update.inf" message when i try to run the security update. this machine is running XP Home, so that group policy fix doesn't apply does it? well, regardless, i do not have a start menu on this machine (another nice side effect of blaster) so i can't figure out how to run modify group policy stuff. if anyone has any ideas, they would be greatly appreciated!! thanks!
