I have a question about Troubleshooting
Driver Problems:
The mouse pointer on a Dell Laptop running Window XP starts to "roll" to the Start
button after about an hour of use. Any suggestions?

Using a mouse or a touchpad? If the latter, may be a sensitivity or other problem
with the pad...

I am having the same problem with the mouse touchpad drifting to the Start after
about an hour of use. Did you figure out a patch?????

Hi Glenn,
I have not found a solution, but the problem is intermittent. I can seem to fix
it for a session by using an external mouse, but it creeps into subsequent sessions,
every now and then.

(touchpad/pointer) This happened on my Twinhead, HP and now Compaq, in win98, win2000
and winxp.
Quick fix is to go fullscreen into a command box and then close it.
ie. Start/Run and "command". Alt-Enter to toggle between fullscreen. "exit" to close.
Bloody annoying!

I was having the same problem. I found this Dell knowledgebase item and it seemed
to have worked.
http://support.dell.com/us/en/kb/document.asp?DN=1033230
I just installed the original drivers.

Hi, we've been having this problem with some of our Dell laptops as well. The problem
seems to actually be with the "pointing stick" (mini joystick). Try disabling it,
this seems to have worked for us. Ian.

Everyone talks about "disable the pointing stick!". My one and single question is...
How does one go about turning off the pointing stick? I'm on a Dell Inspiron 8000
if it matters at all. This pointing stick I used to use ALL of the time and it worked
fine. Now, however, it just goes HAYWIRE if I bump it and it takes me a good 2-3
minutes to bump it to where it stops going haywire. It usually FLIES to the bottom
left or upper right corner so fast that I only see the mouse pointer for 2 frames.
Sometimes it shoots back and forth between the two corners... anyway...
So, how do I turn my pointing stick off? Is it possible to keep the touchpad on?

Disabling the pointing stick is very easy. I have an inspiron 4000 also. Just go
to start --> control panel, then double click on the mouse icon. Under "Device Settings"
you can click to box to disable the pointing stick.
I am hoping this solves the problem too.

ok, did that. there is nothing under Mouse settings related to pointing stick or
the slick pad. Is this because the right software was never loaded for the mouse
in the first place? im sure the system has been formatted over and over.

I had the same problem. The screen allowing you to disable the pointer is apparently
not present in the base XP. You need to install the Dell-specific touchpad driver,
available from Dell support at the URL below. Once I installed this, I was able
to disable the stick and got access to many other tweakable parameters as well.

Good Luck, Tim

Thank you Bill Rockenbeck!! Your solution to download the Dell-specific driver from
the URL you provided solved my problem more than 2 years after your original post.
Thank you very much. I would like to note that the tech support people at the my
work could not solve this problem, but they did suggest me to google for a solution,
which worked. Thanks a million, you have saved my sanity--this problem was driving
me crazy during a business trip far from home.

your comments with solutions 2 years after your solution posted. Thank you again.

I have a Dell C610 refurb. Have had it 2-3 years. The persistent skitterish pointer
issues destroy the utility of the laptop and affet one's sanity over time! I used
all of the different Dell and Synaptic drivers__always running XP Pro. I found the
'eraser' driver conflict and disabled the 'eraser' in the Dell utility. Nothing good
happens as it reasserts itself sooner or later and the setting is never really stable.
I used several different mice_usb, ps2, etc. Sooner or later the pointer goes astray
again.
Finally I pulled the keyboard and CUT the smaller flat cable attached to the 'eraser'.
Taped it up out of the way. Reinstalled the keyboard. BINGO__no more problems!!!
It is the best and only reliable fix that I have found for this hugely irritating
pointer conflict that destroys the fun and utility of the laptop.
I am sincerely happy now with this little P3 laptop!!
Good luck,
Fallsoff
