Can anyone indicate if there is a method to force Explorer (XP version) to open the C-drive as its default, rather than My Documents? Thank you.

Try this...To restore the My Documents folder to its default location, follow these steps: Click Start , and then point to My Documents. Right-click My Documents, and then click Properties. Click Restore Default, and then click OK. In the Move Documents box, click Yes to move your documents to the new location, or click No to leave your documents in the original location.

It seems that explorer selects "My Documents" by default, and if it's not there, it creates it. Edit all your Windows Explorer shortcuts to : \explorer.exe /e,::{20d04fe0-3aea-1069-a2d8-08002b30309d} and explorer will open exploring my computer instead of my documents. ---or--- \explorer.exe /e,c: will explore C:

You can edit the start menu entry for explorer and change it to explorer /e,c: (or anything else for that matter). Or you can create a new shortcut to explorer on your desktop.

Thank you very much. This worked first time, even for a technologically ignorant type like myself!

Thank you. The first solution was incomprehensible to me, but the second one worked perfectly!

Right click on the shortcut and select properties. In the dialog that follows in
the "Target" box type:
"explorer.exe /e,C:\"

Your solution worked, but I explorer still opens into my documents when I right click start and then go to explore. Is there anyway to change this setting so that it will open explorer to the C:\

Open Windows Explorer, open the My Computer folder, then drag the icon for the C drive or which ever to your desktop or taskbar. This becomes a shortcut to that drive

Explorer may have created a "My Documents" folder, however, as its contents correspond 100% to contents of my C-drive 2+ GB, I would like to get rid of it to save disk space. How?

Hi...still looking for a solution to this: I right-click on the start button and select "Explore" from the context menu. Explorer opens in "C:\Documents ans Settings\myusername\Start Menu" I would like to make this open in My Documents. It difficult, because you cannot right-click the "Explore" link in that context menu. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! --MTL

Bkkguy, that is by design... when you right click on the start menu and explore, you are telling Windows THAT's what you want to explore. If you do it in one of the groups in the start menu or a shortcut to a folder on the desktop, it opens explorer to that folder. If you want a quick access to explorer just use (win logo key+e) or put a shortcut to it on the quicklaunch bar.

I see what you're saying, Mark. When we right-click on the start-button and choose
Explore, we are invoking the context-sensitive explorer, with a context of (my user,
Start Menu).

So then here's a question. Suppose I (like blkguy) would like to have a right-click
option on the start menu that opens to the C:\ drive. I know that I can do "%SYSTEMROOT%\explorer.exe
/e, C:\" to make that happen.

So the question becomes, how can I *add* an item to the Start Menu right-click menu.
If I can add an item, then I can create a new link, something like "Explore C" or
whatever, that will open C: specifically, rather than Context-starting explorer.exe.

I Saw a *vague* answer to this question, of how to modify the start-button's context
menu over in Win98 node, but I couldn't find it. I tried a search on this forum,
but my search fu seems to come up empty today.

I think it requires a registry edit, but I'm not sure exactly what.

Any pointers?

Cheers,
-Glenn

Glen,

I asked someone on a forum like this to help me make the same change. He was able
to write a very short, one-liner that I ran and it changed the pointer for the right-click,
start, explore so that it opened the C:\ root directory. I wish I still had that
little fix, but I have since lost it. I believe it was written in VBScript, but
I am not sure.

If anyone knows what I am talking about and can tackle it, I would love to make that
change.
