Anthony

In Internet Explorer, go to Tools | Internet Options... | Connections | Lan Settings...
, and uncheck the "Automatically detect settings" box.

I just spent about 3 hours researching this same problem. I would get to the point
of downloading and it would just hang. I found in an MS Windows Update Troubleshoot
guide information that finally got mine working again. Here is basically the fix
if anyone has a similar problem.
Click on START, RUN and then type: regsvr32 dispex.dll
Press OK and you should see a pop-up saying process succeeded. Now try running windows
update.
