http://www.pcmag.com/utilities/
free program called WinTidy - will restore icon location for every resolution (you
choose when it saves icon layout), then when change resolution, it "loads" the saved
icon layout for that resolution.
only niggle, is that WinXP has "align to grid" for icons - this causes WinTidy to
not properly restore icon places. disable WinXP "align icons" and WinTidy does it's
job superbly.

Controlling your Windows Toolbar locations

Does anyone know of a third party utility or Registry tweaks that can save and restore
your Windows toolbar locations and order?
I use the http://www.pcmag.com/utilities/
free program called WinTidy to manage icon locations for every resolution. It's great
but the icon locations on your desktop are only half the battle. Programs sometimes
change the size or locations of your toolbars even if you've locked them in XP.
Are there any third party utilities that can save / restore / manage your toolbar
locations and sizes?
I keep a 3 column horizontal toolbar setup at the bottom of my screen. The botton
toolbar is to My Computer, middle is the taskbar, and the top is Quick Launch.
It only takes one program to mess them all up.
And hours to put them all back again under the limited tools Microsoft gives us.
Currently they are all vertical and it's a real pain to try and get the Taskbar,
and Quick Launch to set above the My Computer toolbar.

Hello
I was wondering if your problem was ever solved. I just bought a new notebook computer
and am using the Quick Lauch Toolbar under windows xp Home. My problem is I set
up the icons on where I want them but when I restart the computer the icons are all
messed up again.
Thanks
Michael

I've not located a utility such as WinTidy for your desktop that does the same for
your Toolbar locations / groupings. One Work around I've created for the location
of the shortcuts in the Quick Launch Toolbar is to store a backup copy of them on
your desktop in a folder of the same name. I created a folder called "Quick Launch"
on the desktop. Opened it then used the "Ctrl-Drag" technique to drag a copy of them
to the folder.
1. Right-Click on your desktop where to want the "Quick Launch" folder created.
2. Move down the right click menu to "NEW".
3. Choose Folder.
4. Name the Folder "Quick Launch".
5. Open the "Quick Launch" folder.
6. Copy all the items in your "Quick Launch" toolbar into the "Quick Launch" folder.
A. Put the mouse on top of the item you want copied, hold down the Ctrl key,
while the Ctrl key is still held down click the left mouse button on the item, while
still holding down both the Ctrl key and the left mouse button drag the mouse pointer
anywhere inside the "Quick Launch" folder. Now there is a copy of the shortcut both
in your "Quick Launch" toolbar and your "Quick Launch" folder. I good quick way to
backup your Toolbar contents in case the standard "Quick Launch" toolbar gets clobbered
in any way.
I find the folder better to use than the toolbar for these reasons.
1. You have better control of the look and feel for the folder items.
2. You can right click on the columns area and add other column fields.
A. A few I like are all those that show other date information. Such as Date
created, Date Modified, and Last date accessed. The latter is useful. Why have a
"Quick Launch" item that you haven't used in a year and a half?. A other useful item
is the comments field you know it a glance what you use a item for.
Also the folder is useful for maintaining your standard "Quick Launch" toolbar contents.
You can move and/or copy items from it to the folder as needs see fit.
You can also create subfolders under the "Quick Launch" folder for items you want
but not all the time.
Say any hard to locate shortcut that you might want access to quickly that you don't
use that often.
One of the bummers of the standard "Quick Launch" toolbar is if you unselect it from
the toolbar menu and later restore it the items are all sorted by name.

Dear Michael,
I found your posting in a roundabout way (whilst searching Google.com for the "Win
Tidy" programme, which I remember once using in "Win 95 or perhaps 98").
I notice that in order to use "Win Tidy", the "XP" icon arranger has to be disabled.
I installed "XP" about two weeks ago (with intrepidation, after getting a report
that some 40 items are presently likely to be incompatible with "XP"!).
Please can you tell me how to "disable" the "XP" Icon arranger and where it is to
be found if possible?
Thank you. Victor, London. 6/6/04 12.56pm.
