Question about 'Connect a Windows XP system with a Windows 98 system over a Network'

I am trying to network 2 computers. The primary computer is running WinXP Pro and the secondary is running Win98SE. I have both of them connected to a Zonet 8-Port Hub. My green lights are on on both network cards and the hub, so I know my cables and connections are working. I have the XP computer with IP 192.168.0.1 and the 98SE computer with IP 192.168.0.2. Neither one can see the other on My Network Places/Network Neighborhood, but both can see themselves. They both are on workgroup HOME. I have created a user on the XP computer with the login name and password of the 98SE computer. What am I missing? Please tell me how to get these two computers to see each other. I have been working on this for more than a week.

Install Netbeui on the XP machine it is to be found on the XP CD, in a folder called
Valueadd along with the install instructions ,it should be installed by default on
the Win98 SE machine

Be sure to disable the built in firewall in XP or you will never get the two to see each other.

When you setup the 98 machine, did you use the XP CD to do so? If not, that may
be your problem. Try inserting the XP CD in the 98 machine. I autoplay is on, it
should come up with a window asking what you want to do. Click on "Perform additional
tasks", then on "Setup a home or small office network". Just follow the wizard to
complete setting up. And, be sure to have it look at the HOME workgroup.

I had this same problem until I used tehe cd to setup on 98.

If the above does not work, try setting the 98 machine to obtain an IP address automatically
and re-booting, rather than assigning 192.168.0.2. I have also found that assigning
IPs can cause the problem you are having as well.

Hope this helps.

I just had the same problem and fixed it... Head to My Network Places on your XP machine. Click the common task "View Network Connections" then double-click your LAN connections. Go to Properties, then highlight the TCP/IP protocol and hit the Properties button. From there, go to the Advanced button under the General tab, and then to WINS. Choose to Enable Netbios under TCP/IP. Apply, close, close, close, etc. All of my shared devices and folders popped right back up after this! WhooHoo!
