How Do I Turn Windows Picture and Fax Viewer Back On?
Wednesday, October 2, 2002 at 4:05 pm Posted by Jessica
(2 messages posted)
I have a question about How
do I turn off the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer as my default image viewer?:
I know that Windows Picture and Fax Viewer is supposed to be the default picture
viewer but I have been sent pictures through email and when I try to open them, I
get a wordpad window with all sorts of strange symbols instead of a picture. Now,
the guy who sent me the pictures also has Windows XP and scanned them in. Why won't
this work? I don't think I turned off Pictures and Fax Viewer but maybe I did?

Assuming you know how to change the application for a particular file type through
the Windows Explorer:
The application is:
rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen %1

My problem is it just won't open anymore. The file associations are intact, but
the viewer just doesn't open. I also did have the problem where the thumbnails disappear,
but that was resolved. Would there be any reason for the program to not open?

My computer was using view32 to look at jpgs when i double clicked them for some
reason. I tried setting Windows Picture and Fax Viewer as default for viewing but
that didn't work. I entered regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll at the command prompt and now
it works right.

Hmm... I have a problem with pictures, using WinXP Home Edition too. But not with
the picture viewer. When i close a folder that contains pictures, the computer kinda
freeze. I have to Ctrl+Alt+Suppr it, and close manually rundll32.exe so it gets going,
but then explorer.exe fails to close when i want to turn off the pc. Any idea ?

I'd love to know this too, as I recently uninstalled Photoshop 7, and now I can't
get any thumbnails to show up in explorer. I use Win2k, and I know this is th XP
forum, but it was the only relevant topic I could find when searching the site. Any
help would be appreciated...

Try checking your PC for spy ware and adware. spy ware of these sorts has frequently
caused rundll32 issues for me.
Two free programs: spybot and ad-aware

I know of one way that is pretty easy to fix it, shouldn't take too long to do it
either.
Just find the file on your computer (*.jpg), right mouse click, and select "Open
With".
Then it will bring up a list of programs. Choose the one you want, but also tick
the box "always use this program... etc". That should fix it. Do it for each of
the file types you want to change.
Or, try and tell the program that is making the problem occur to not associate with
those files.

Make sure you're signed in as an Administrator. Go into Contol Panel and select
QuickTime. The QuickTime settings box comes up. In the drop-down menu, select "File
Type Associations." Click "File Types," and go to the file you do not want QuickTime
to be the default viewer. For jpeg files, you have to go into the "Miscellaneous"
section by expanding it (clicking the plus sign), uncheck "JPEG image file," click
"Apply" and it's saved.
Now, also in the Contol Panel, go into Folder Options. Click the 3d tab - File Types.
Go down to "JPE" which are for files that have jpeg extensions. Click "Change"
and select the what app you want to view them with which will then be the default
viewer for jpeg files - ckick ok and close.
Last, go to the file/picture. Right click it, select "Open with" and again select
the app you want to view the pic with. Now, all of your jpeg files will open with
the app you chose and will have its icon.

To change a file type association to Windows Picture and Fax Viewer:
1. Open any Windows folder
2. On the Tools menu select Folder options...
3. Select the File Types tab
4. Wait for the registered file type associations to appear
5. Find the file type you want to change (probably JPG or GIF)
6. Click on the file type and click Advanced button
7. Click on the Open action and click the Edit button
8. Find the box labeled "Application used to perform action." This is the application
that opens this type of file. Delete the application listed in that box and replace
it with the following:
rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen %1
9. Click Ok, Ok, and Close, and you should be good to go

Thanks for the tip. The Viewer opens fine now. However, In the Viewer the Editor
button (Ctrl-E) no longer functions. When I click on it, the Windows Picture and
Fax Viewer closes (as it should), but the Editor (in my case Microsoft Photo Editor)
never starts up. Any suggestions on how I can fix this? It appears to me that the
registry link has disappeared.
Thanks,
Chuck

To resolve this problem, double-click on the MY COMPUTER icon on the desltop, click
on Tools/Folder Options, select the FILE TYPES tab, scroll down to find JPG under
the extensions column, click to select JPG, click on CHANGE for OPENS WITH (near
the bottom), and select the program (i.e. Windows Picture and Fax Viewer), and you're
done. Hope this helps.

I have been searching everywhere for help and this is getting very close! I think
I have the same problem as below. It's not that picture and fax viewer isn't there,
and it is my default (I have done all the above steps and everything seems to be
as it should). It's just not working. The thumbnails are not showing the picture
(just the standard icon thingy) and double clicking on them just does nothing. Clicking
on 'show as a filmstrip' also does nothing, everything just sits there. Also right
clicking and trying 'preview' does nothing. The video files do have a picture and
they do play when I double click them.
Any help with this would be really appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

Fix is three stages
First, to restore Preview capability to Windows Explorer:
Create a .reg file in notepad with the following contents:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.bmp\ShellEx]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.bmp\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
@="{7376D660-C583-11d0-A3A5-00C04FD706EC}"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg\ShellEx]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
@="{7376D660-C583-11d0-A3A5-00C04FD706EC}"
Note: Repeat ShellEx pair for each root class (image extension) you want to repair
Save the file as ShellEx.reg or something similar. Double click on it to update your
registry.
Step two, to repair the Windows Picture and FaxViewer launch (default double-click
action).
Enter at the Command/Run prompt:
regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll
Finally, if you have changed default applications to offset the loss of FaxViewer,
you will need to set the default OPEN action back to Windows Picture and FaxViewer
(see earlier posts in this thread).
The Ctrl E function of WPFV will follow the EDIT action associated with that file
extension.
It appears this functionality was disabled by an MS Patch application, though I have
yet to read which one it was.

My thumbnails wouldn't show up and when I double clicked images nothing happened.
Then I put "regsvr32 shimgvw.dll" into the run coammnd box, got some succeded message
and IT WORKS!
So happy because I somehow caused the problem while here at someones house, and flying

The regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll trick didn't work for me, so I installed ShellExView
from http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html on a hunch that it might be a shell
extension causing it. Then I went through the shell extensions, looking for what
was a Microsoft extension and what was not. Then I disabled the non-MS ones one by
one, and then tried the edit button to see if disabling them worked.
I got lucky and the problem was with the first extension I disabled. Apparently WhoLockMe
does not play nice with the fax and picture viewer's edit button. Pity, it's an awesome
extension.

Thanks! My security suite disabled WPaFV while MS worked out a vulnerability workaround.
They failed to tell me how to undo it. Simple...sweet!

to make windows picture and fax viewer the default program again
go to my computer
then tools
then folder options
then file types (select the file type whose default opening program you'd like to
change, for example tif or jpeg)
go down to where it says opens with
click change and select windows picture and fax viewer
i actually had to call support and have them walk me thru that, seeing as how i'm
a genius and all. good luck

re: How Do I Associate Windows Picture & Fax Viewer in Firefox?
Wednesday, May 10, 2006 at 12:22 pm Posted by Patrick
(1 messages posted)
I've read all the previous messages. I don't have a problem with my Windows P&F Viewer
being associated with JPG files. That is working fine if I download a picture. My
problem is with Firefox and opening a picture in Webmail. Since Firefox is my default
browser and it's trying to open JPG attachments with CorelPhotoAlbumPhoto, a free
(60-day) program that was on my new Dell laptop. I want to change the program that
will open JPG attachments, but I can't find the Windows P&F program. I did look in
the Windows System 32 file for the exe file mentioned, but I don't seem to have it.
I copied and pasted the path that was noted above, but that did not work either.
Finally, and this may be a question for the Firefox forum, the option to "Do this
automatically from now on" is greyed out. I want to do associate Windows P&F once
and not everytime. Thanks for whomever's help!

for me it was enough to actually delete the association

XP *should* fall back to it's native default, the internal viewer

Windows picture and fax viewer has completely disappeared from my computer. I've
tried typing in regsvr 32 /i shimgvm.dll and a dozen other commands to no avail.
I get the same error message everytime - "LoadLibrary('shimgvw.dll') failed - The
specified module could not be found." Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I have this exact same problem. Thumbnails show up no problem in folder views and
filmstrips work fine. But when I double click on a picture, Windows Picture and Fax
Viewer pops up for like a second and automatically closes. I made sure all the files
were still associated with WPFV and did the run command and it still doesn't work.

Actually, I don't know why the Thumbnails view in my Explorer folder stopped working
~ maybe due to Paint Shop Pro, or Paint Shop Photo Album 5, or Nero. But I tried
3 different fixes and none of them worked, until I found this discussion forum and
tried this one. It worked excellently. I now have Thumbnails view again for ALL picture
and video types! It also added the miniature pics on the sub-folders!
Thanks.

thank you! [regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll] worked just fine for me. The last thing i remember
doing before Fax viewer no longer opened (no error message, it just did not respond)
was:
1) removing SPDT drivers and the entire SPDT key from the registry
2) running Fix-It registry fixer to delete unnecessary keys.
perhaps something happened that should have been avoided in one of those activities...
regardless, it works again! thanks ^-^

I think I just fixed this by right clicking a picture, click properties, click the
change button next to "open with", choose a different program. Let's see if it
stays this way.

sorry, this doesn't work. I deleted both entries in the registry and the picture
and fax viewer still opens all .gifs.
Thanks anyway though.

By default XP uses Windows Picture and Fax Viewer to preview pictures. It takes a
while to get used to it; however, once you do, it’s hard to go back.
Several programs when installed try to take over the role of picture preview. This
is very difficult to reverse. Here’s how you do it.
1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. In the textbox type: regsvr32 shimgvw.dll
4. Click OK
You may or may not have to reboot to see your chang
