Question about 'Save Your Desktop Layout'

I have a question about Save
Your Desktop Layout:
Although my Win XP version seems to keep my icons in place during normal
startups, I often have to change the screen resolutions to use LCD projectors
and everytime I do, my icons are re-arranged in a seemingly random fashion.
How do I prevent this?

Right-click on the desktop and under "arrange" tell it to autoarrange...

You see the problem is that I don't want to 'auto arrange' the icons... I want to
save them in the specific places where I have put them. How can I make them stay
after a resolution change?
