RPC Win XP Service Problem
Sunday, October 6, 2002 at 5:24 am Posted by Nelson
(1 messages posted)
I was working with Win XP Services and I foolishly uninstalled RPC. Is there anyway
to enable it again? I have a Presario Laptop and OEMS XP Home version.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Nelson: to enable RPC service;
1. click Start, Run, type: services.msc
2. locate and select the service that you want to change.
3. click Action, and then click Properties.
4. on the General tab, click the drop-down for the "Start up type" list box and change
the start up as needed. For example, if you select "Alerter" and change its start
up type from Automatic to Disabled, that service will no longer start when you start
Windows.
5. click OK when finished making your changes.
6. highlight the first listed Remote Procedure... for details that it provides the
endpoint mapper and other PRC services.
to Start the service; click the "Start the service" in the left-hand column.
7. the next entry is the RPC Locator which manages the RPC name service database.
it can be started in the same way.
another method of starting a service is to double-click the service name, change
the Startup type to Automatic, Apply, OK, then reboot.
the first link below (after your text) says this about RPC:
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) This service is vital. Just about everything depends
on this service to be running. This is also the only service that you can not disable
using the Services MMC.
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator Manages the RPC name service database. May not
be needed by most users. If something on your network breaks after you disable this
service, set it back to Manual or Automatic. Disabled unless required for your network.
Leave it on Automatic.
the second link below says the same thing.
let us know if this worked for you...

Hello,
I Tryed the described Method, but it don't funczioned. I ran into this Problem by
deaktivating the "profile1" in the RPC profile list. This causes that the RPC didn't
start because there was not valid profile. This cause that the Propertys can't be
changed.
Have anybody another idea for reactivating the RPC Service?

Wolfgang: try putting Profile 1 back in.
see if the following helps:
open the Services Console (Run: services.msc), then highlight Remote Procedure Call
(RPC), right-click the service and select Properties.
under the Log On tab, set the account under which the service is executed; which
should show as enabled for at least one Hardware Profile (Profile 1).
click the Enable button if Profile 1 is shown as Disabled.
under the Recovery tab, for first, second and subsequent failures; select: "Restart
the Computer" (unless you prefer one of the other choices).
under the General tab, verify that the path to the executable looks like:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost
and the Startup type set to: Automatic
and the Service status set to: Start
may require a Restart.
let me know if this helps...

I am having the same problem with the RPC. When attempting to do as you have stated,
I do not have that option available to start it/enable it. The option is there, just
not accessible. I read another thread somewhere where it was stated that you would
have to go into the registry to fix it, but they never finished the thread to state
where in the registry I would need to go to enable it. Please help.....

Ezenitin_98: try the following;
open the Registry Editor by clicking Start, Run, type: regedit
expand down to RpcSs via: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RpcSs
highlight RpcSs and look for the following entry in the right pane:
Name: Start
Type: REG_DWORD
Data: 0x00000002
needed to automatically start your RPC service.
if not seen, click on Edit in the menu bar,
select New, DWORD Value,
type: Start
click on Edit, Modify,
type: 0x00000002
in the Value data window.
exit your registry, you may need to restart or log out of Windows for the change
to take effect.
let me know the results...

Hello,
I tried all the prescribed solutions but none of them worked for me. I tried going
to the "properties" of RPC but it wouldn't let me see the properties window - it
doesnt appear. When I attempt to start it, it has an error that it cant start because
it is either disabled or a dependency isnt enabled (its set to automatic). Problem
is, a lot of items under "automatic" doesn't start and cant start... :(

Anton: RPC is not dependent on any other service but many (40 or more) depend on
RPC...so we need to get that service started.
as you are not getting any response in normal mode, try accessing the services in
Safe Mode;
reboot and press the F8 key repeatedly to reach the Startup menu, select Safe Mode
and press the Enter key.
after the Desktop loads, click Start, Run, type: services.msc
right-click Remote Procedure Call(RPC),
then on the General tab from the drop down choose Automatic and click Start.
next choose the Logon tab, click Local System account and also enable Hardware Profile
as Profile 1
click Apply and OK.
now if that doesn't start RPC, things get really interesting as your next step is
to use the Recovery Console to start up a disabled service.
go to the link below (after your text) and use it to enable a service, rather then
disable, by replacing the words "disable servicename" with "enable servicename"
in the KB article.
let us know what worked for you...

Hello again and thanks for the speedy reply!
I kept trying to go to the properties page of the service but it never did seem to
appear regardless of how much ive chosen Properties when I right click the RPC service.
Ive also just tried the Repair Console and tried the solution their but it still
didn't work :(
Btw, under services.msc, the extended tab wont display properly so I always use the
standard tab (has been apparent since the problem started - after I was DoS via RPC).
Furthermore, some javascript dependent sites and local commands wont work properly.

I am rather happy at the solution I stumbled on to.
I hypothesized that the reason behind the non-compliance of RPC from starting was
the hardware profile not being selected.
I modified the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\ROOT\Legacy_RPCSS\0000
Then I changed the CSConfigFlags from 1 to 4 (choosing my hardware profile).
After changing it, I tried to start the RPC service and it did. I restarted the computer
and everything came back to normal.
Hopefully people who have the same problem may refer here for a possible solution
:)
Many thanks :)

I have the same RPC problem, but only 1 hardware profile. I have yet to try the
Recovery Console solution since I don't know the old start type to input as a parameter
to the Enable command. Anyone have any more ideas? Thanks in advance.

my computer is back and useable again.

Hey, I'm having a weird problem with my rpc in that when start up my computer everything
seems to be fine, but then i get a window that pops up. It says that the computer
has to restart because the "RPC service has terminated unexpectedly", and now it
does this everytime I startup windows. I checked the services.msc and both the RPC
and RPC Locater are on automatic but it is still giving me this problem of suddenly
terminating. I really hope i can fix this... Any Ideas!?

This solution was also what worked for us, after trying everything else we could
find. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
In response to Matt B, we only have 1 hardware profile as well, but Anton's trick
worked for us when we did it just as he described.

Matt and Serge,
You are being hacked -- this is the problem that got us into our RPC mess in the
first place. We disabled RPC to stop the hacker in his/her tracks and only thereafter
discovered we had just done something really stupid :-).
You should apply the MS Windows patch WindowsXP-KB823980-x86-ENU (or something like
it for your OS) which you can get from the MS website. This worked immediately for
us. Tip: download it, then unplug yourself and install it.

More info on RPC hack attempts
Monday, August 11, 2003 at 4:32 pm Posted by Grayson Morris
(5 messages posted)
Here's the official MS blurb on this:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=823980
We were, just as you, getting slammed every time we reconnected. That's why we disabled
the RPC service -- to give us enough time to download the patch. So if you don't
have enough time to download it before you get the RPC screen of death again, there
are two things you can do:
1) disable your RPC service, and then come back to Anton's message to get your system
back after you've downloaded and installed the patch; or
2) set the time-to-shutdown-after-failure option for RPC to something greater than
1 minute (the default) to give you time to complete the download. I suppose this
gives the hacker more time for what they want as well.
Both options are implemented via control panel / administrative tools / services,
right-click on RPC entry, then follow the screens. (Sorry I'm not more hands-on descriptive
here; it's real late here in the Netherlands and I'm going to bed now that I finally
have a taskbar and a PC that starts up in less than two hours again :-) ).

to whom it may concern;
I was trying to install some lame addon when this same problem began, after it would
shut me down exvery 5-10 mins for approx 5 hrs (!#@$^&*%$#^&**() I found an update
in the microsoft web sight that included the RPC files...some security update for
XP... so i figured what the heck, and ran this file called "WindowsXP-KB823980-x86-ENU.exe"
sorry, cant remember where I found it, juststartted serching for remote Procedure
Call(RPC) and found it. It seems to have set it up correctly, and now I find this
sight that confirms that the "services.msc" also will allow access to set the setting
to automatic

The rpc encountering a problem and shutting down ur pc is the latest worm to hit,
for a quick fix goto http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.aspx?displaylang=en
select either 3 or 4 depending on whether you have 2x or xp. Put ur modem onto
standby mode, run the fix, restart your pc. Good luck and update ur firewalls.

Answered my own question. If you don't have access to the start menu or can't get
to properties follow the following steps. (PS thanks Anton never could have done
it without your advice)
1) Restart your computer and hold down F8
2) Choose 'safe mode with command line'
3) type 'regedit'
4) Follow this path from the window that pops up "HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\ROOT\Legacy_RPCSS\"
5) Click on the the second file (can't remember what it was called)
6) Change the '1' to a '4'
7) Close window and type exit

Hi Anton,
I also used your method and it seems to work. Thanks! You're a really clever guy.
I have only one hardware profile, but changing the value of CSConfigFlags from 1
to 4 worked anyway.
Should I change it back to 1 again when everything works, or what does it mean to
always use the value 4 in the future ?

hi
i've got the same problem. after disabling the RPC service there's no way to start
it again. the menu is dead and you cannot run it (error 1058). also, i cannot install
a patch by microsoft, because somehow cryptographic services on my comp have been
disabled mysteriously. of course you cannot enable them again (error 1068 appears).
i'm stucked... furhtermore, as i cannop drag/drop/copy/paste i cannot move some important
data to another partition and then format the c: drive afterwards, i've got to take
the HD out and go to some friend of mine to make a backup. of course, burning a cdr
in this state is impossible...
ah, you can see the toolbar with the "start" button, just right-click on the very
edge of the screen (depending on where your toolbar was) and choose any toolbar from
the top menu, then drag the short line up, like the toolbar has been hidden. hiope
it helps

Well, Im taking up a undergrad degree in Guidance Counseling Education and another
degree in Psychology :)
For those of you who cannot launch regedit (caused by certain virii), you will have
to use the command line registry editor called "reg" under the windows\system32 folder.
It is a bit tricky but it works. Just try it out :)

Hey, at first I encountered this same problem! But you're probably looking at the
wrong ROOT/RPCSS thing. The one you are looking for is in HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG\. There
are a couple other SYSTEM\ROOT\ folders. Just make sure you're in HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG\
and there shoudl be a CSConfigFlags there waiting for you to change!
Hope this helps!

based on their work, the most helpful first step would be to download and install

Hello - I am an experienced computer user, but novice computer fixer, and I am having
the same problem as others - the RPC service unexpectedly terminating, and the system
restarting. I am able to download and install the patch from MS using a portable
hard drive and another computer, but my question is this: once the patch has been
applied, and my internet theoretically works again, what do I do about the msblast.exe
problem, or any of the other problems associated with this "blaster worm"?
I installed the patch on my win2k computer (which was not having internet problems,
but did have the msblast.exe running), and msblast.exe was still in the processes
of the task manager area.
Basically, can anyone give any advice about how to solve these various problems?
Thank you so much in advance - I'm not sure if I'm asking the right questions, but
it was a miracle I found this forum in the first place, so I thought I'd start here.

and

Ha! I got it! Guys!
I disabled RPC this morning, then I hadbad mood all along until I found the way out!
My OS is XP HomeEdition OEM.
In fact, it is not engough for you to make RPC work if you only set "start" under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RpcSs if you had "DISABLED "
RPC before. You have to change "Configflag" under any "LEGACY_RPCSS\0000" ( I did
so, though I am not sure, but it works, and I have no time to try any possibilities:)
start at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\!!
LEGACY_RPCSS\0000\Configflag should be the flag of DISABLE if the values is "1".
When the configflag set to be "0", RPC would be activated again!
I am rather glad to give a solution to this problem.
I am Chinese man:)
Thank you all!

kk: you have just been infected with the famous worm called Blaster a.k.a. LovSan.
there are three steps to recovery;
the first step is to keep your browser from restarting;
while offline, click Start, Run, type: services.msc
and press the Enter key.
scroll down to Remote Procedure Call (RPC) and right-click it, select Properties,
Recovery tab,
in all three failure boxes change the setting from "Restart the Computer" to "Restart
the Service".
Note: some folks prefer to use "Take No Action".
click Apply, OK.
the second step is to restore your RPC service by installing the Microsoft fix at
the first link below (after your text).
the third step is to get rid of the worm by installing the fix from Symantec at the
second link below.
let us know what worked for you...

I am having the same problem some of you had with enabling the remote procedure call
(RPC) service after I had stupidly disabled it. Cheng says to make the registry
change in "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\!!LEGACY_RPCSS\0000\Configflag
should be the flag of DISABLE if the values is 1". Anton says to change in "HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\ROOT\Legacy_RPCSS\0000
Then I changed the CSConfigFlags from 1 to 4".
Which should be changed, "current_config" or "local_machine"?
I don't see CSConfigFlags. Is it the "\0000" that needs to be changed? I'm sorry
I don't understand fully. Could someone give exact instructions on this? I feel
really hesitant about making a registry change. Thanks

Will the Microsoft patch restore my RPC if I have foolishly disabled it in response
to the virus attack? I have read Anton et al's method of restoring the RPC via regedit

have heard before, I disabled RPC and now my machine barely works and I cannot access
the RPC properties to enable it again.

John: to answer your first question; yes, the MS patch will restore your RPC Service,
if you can download it.
the sequence of doing things is important because the MS patch will do a system restore
as part of its install routine and that will include the worm!
so do it this way:
remove the worm (Symantec),
reboot,
download the MS patch to restore RPC,
install the patch,
reboot.
now if you can't reach the internet, we will have to manually work on the problem,
so let me know...

Everett,
My computer at home is not able to get on the net since I disabled the RPC. Before
I did this, I did manage to download the latest Norton definitions and I think the
worm is stripped out. In any event, I would rather have my machine back with the
virus in it than the mess it is now. I have downloaded Symmantec's fixblast and
the MS patch to a floppy here at work. Wish me luck, I'll let you know how I do.

I did the same thing in Win2k. Disabling RpcSs and rebooting was a bad idea, I'm
not doing that again. Sounds like this should work for both 2k and XP, although the
methods might vary slightly.
The easist way without hacking you registry (and this does the same thing but explicitly
and not by trail and error) is to use the recovery console.
I installed recovery console as a startup option (as described in windows help).
Booted to it (selecting the install that i screwed up and typing the admin password).
Then at the prompt typed:
enable RpcSs service_auto_start
Which changes your registry to tell it to start RpcSs automatically (just like hacking
the registry but you don't have to worry aboult getting it as wrong). Then to restart:
exit
It rebooted and everything works again.
Then I deleted recovery console (as described in windows help)
Remember this was in windows 2000 but I imagine it should be similar in XP
All sorted.

this is THE fix... IF you've disabled RPC yourself (not a virus)... i see a lot of

RPC, the solution really is as simple as this...

I experienced the same problem as some others here (pounding my head on the table
through the night), I could not find the CSConfigFlags key, nor could I make changes
to my registry. Working at Microsoft I contacted the RPC and SCM developers, and
was able to obtain a workaround that solves this issue.
If you can boot into Windows (regular or safe-mode), open a command window (windows
key + run, type cmd.exe) and type the following text:
reg.exe delete "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Hardware Profiles\Current\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\ROOT\LEGACY_RPCSS\0000"
/v CsConfigFlags
You may also be able to use the recovery console to edit the above key manually (note
it is different than the key previously mentioned in this thread).
Please don't send me hate mail regarding the RPC problem, I am as frustrated as all
of you are :-(.
Good luck everyone!

XP has a command-line registry editor. I remember doing the same thing for my brother's
computer. This doesn't fix the virus, though, only the RPC problem.
The program "reg" is found under \Windows\System32 folder. @ the command line, just
type "reg /?" (without the "") for a list of options.
C:\WINDOWS\system32>reg add HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Ro
ot\Legacy_RPCSS\0000 /v CSConfigFlags /t REG_DWORD /d 4
just do the above. Start, Run, copy paste the above, and enter. Before restarting,
goto the services.msc program and start RPC.
Reply if this helps.

For those of you (like myself) who just managed to shut down RpcSs (I did it via
Safe mode) while eradicating the worm du jour, this hint will work to turn RpcSs
back on. If you actually deleted your Profile instead, you may need to also fix
HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\ROOT\Legacy_RPCSS\0000 (I don't
know). And as was mentioned earlier, if the idea of messing with the registry is
something that gives you fits, try installing the Recovery Console and making the
changes that way.

I was debugging a problem on windows when I accidentally disabled my RPC. I figured,
it's a service, I can always re-enabled it. Of course you can't as the properties
boxes no longer show up without RPC (I have no idea why they would build that dep).
Everything went foobar on the machine until I read this tip and rebooted. Thank
you!

I was having the same problem. I couldn't install the RPC fix because Crypto would
not start. Crypto would not start because RPCSS would not start. I couldn't copy
any files because svchost wasn't running right.
This fixed it!! Did I say thank you?

I hope you would have make your machine work properly. But if this message can help

I also have to say sorry to you not speaking the key as a whole. In fact, the "!!"

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_RPCSS\0000
and you can change the "Configflags" item from 0 to 1 ( for my case ). I have two

Both of them have a value of 0x00000020(32).
Write back to this so as not to mislead any one else now.

As for Aton's message, the value from 1 to 4 all work properly. Maybe any non-zero
value would act well.
Maybe the HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG\System\CurrentControlSet\is a refer to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\
in XP, I guess.

I recently went on a 2000PRO settings spree trying to make it a veritable Fort Knox,
well I mistook RemoteProcedureCall for a Remote Administration service! This caused
the following to cease functioning: CUT&PASTE-I could cut, but not paste! Some internet
forms...& the BIGGIE- RightClick Property dialogs would not appear sometimes(files
yes, services console NO). I would recommend people check out Everett's idea, I found
the RegKey and modified it from
0x00000004 to 0x00000002; voila! It worked. heh, phew(reading a forum 4min, changing
a RegKey 20sec, avoiding a reformat PRICELESS).

I got it. Probably won't help you, but I searched everywhere and couldn't find this:
This is the registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Hardware Profiles\Current\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\ROOT\LEGACY_ALERTER\0000
Change CSConfigFlags to 0
This re-enables RPC for the current hardware profile. Without it enabled, you can't
view properties for any service.
cheers!

I disabled some bill gates trojans in the services area, and killed rpcss. indirectly.
so I followed your registry fix by going to see rpcss, and it was 000002etc. but
showed dependency on DCOM. went to DCOM and its double word was 000000004, changed

I had a similar issue on Windows 2000 (RPC disabled by accident), I believe the solution
would be the same for XP. Solved it by:
1. Go to Start/Run, type RegEdit, then hit ENTER
2. Locate "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RpcSs"
3. Change "Start" value from 4 to 2
4. Restart computer
I wish MS was clever enough to at least warn the user not to disable RPC service
Hope it helps someone hours of fiddling around

Hi. I seem to be to 127th who was foolish enough to do such a kind off thing. Again,
although I do only have 1 hardware profile, the trick worked. And saved my day.
Thx 2 Anton!

I've got a similar but not quite the same problem. My RPC service won't start but
it gives me an Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified. I've searched
for a solution to this but have yet to find one. This was the closest I could find.
Any suggestions?

Man... Somehow, it seems better now that I found out that I am not the only one to
do this...Even if it is five years later. Thank you guys.
I edited my Register, using Anton's meathod. It seems to have worked fine.

This solution was also what worked for me, after trying other options for over 10
hours. Thank you, thank you, thank you! In response to Matt B, I only have 1 hardware
profile as well, but Anton's trick worked for me, when I did it just as he described.
Thanks again, --Curt
