dwwin.exe HELP!!!!!
Thursday, October 10, 2002 at 5:32 pm Posted by Francis

Hello all,
May be I can get some help here...
I have been getting the "dwwin.exe" error when I shut down my computer. (This is
the same error described in this same group on October 8, 2002). I have found the
source of my issue, on my system in particular, with alot of time and effort...
It is the Gravis Experience 4.5 Control Panel. This is the app used to set the buttons
on my game pad.
Anyhow, when I uninstall the gravis experience 4.5, I no longer have the error!!!
However, I can not set the buttons on my game pad...so this is useless :-(
I have been trying to find a solution to this issue for about 6 months now. The
tech support at gravis is not helping me very well. I had left a post at the microsoft
news group, and no one will help me there. The only people that replied told me
that my "issue" is not really an issue and they would rather help people with "real"
problems :-(. The tech support at microsoft is too much money (I am a student...I
have a very limited budget).
I am hoping that some body here will help me and not throw my issue aside. This
error has been bothering me for a very long time...and it's time that it got fixed.
I should also mention; I tried the solution given in the dwwin.exe post on Oct 8,
and had no luck.
Please Help Me!!!
Francis

>Hello Francis,
i've got the same problem, but without the gamepad.
With the following tips the problem is solved. You may download the articles as follows:
http://wintotal.de/Tipps/Eintrag.php?RBID=2&TID=711&URBID=12
(It's in german but referring to Microsoft Newsgroup, so if there are any translation
problems you find there the original english one (i hope so).
http://www.jsifaq.com/SUBK/tip5200/rh5281.htm
(This one is in English)
On WinXP Prof., german version, I did it in the way discribed in theses articles
(first the german, than the english) an the problem is solved.
So I hope it will work on your computer too. Good Luck
regards
Michael

Look at this:
FILENAME: Dwwin.exe.
PROGRAM NAME: Dr. Watson.
DESCRIPTION: Microsoft application error-reporting tool, which gathers data about
malfunctioning software and can send it to Microsoft.
RECOMMENDED ACTION: Permit once to transmit this information

Hello,
The fixes I found here did not help. The one ref "let error message repost one time"
did not work because windows is in process of shutting down so no error report is
generated...computer shuts down before can generate.
You are in luck though, see below email from GRAVIS:
Dear Gravis Customer,
This is any issue with some software on your system conflicting with Xperience. We
usually see antivirus or Nortan System Works as the programs that all customers have.
If you are familiar with the Registry:
Open regedit, go to:
HKLM_SOFTWARE_MICROSOFT_CURRENT VERSION_RUN
You will need to modify the value of the registry key so that the application starts
up in
*belownormal*
processor priority.
Example:
start /belownormal c:\windows\system32\Grxp4exe.exe /init
"start /belownormal" is the addition you will make to the beginning of the
line...
**If you are not familiar with the Registry please do not use the registry hack.
Regards,
Gravis Technical Support
I hope this ;helps.

Just tried the hack...it works but the path, "HKLM_SOFTWARE_MICROSOFT_CURRENT VERSION_RUN"
should be "
HKLM_SOFTWARE_MICROSOFT_WINDOWS_CURRENT VERSION_RUN" (note _WINDOWS_ was missing.
The change to value should look like "start /belownormal Grxp4exe.exe /init", don't
use "c:\windows\system32\" as in email.
Also, I notice high cpu usage under windows explorer with this control panel installed.
I recommend upgrading to Microsoft product.

Don't bother editing the registry. All you have to do to resolve the dwwin error
when restarting or shutting down your computer is to update Windows Messenger to
version 5.0.0. After you've done this, you won't get this error message anymore.

I have the dwwin.exe problem as well. Regarding the Windows Messenger version,
it depends on which Messenger client you use. From WM click Help, then .NET Service
Status, then in new IE window click Required Messenger Upgrade. Select appropriate
client to check for the latest update. For me though, this did not solve the problem,
as I was already running the latest version of WM.
